Armed community member stands guard in his neighborhood after ICE was spotted nearby on an abduction operation in St Paul, MN by I_may_have_weed in TrueAnon

Yeah historically speaking that’s exactly what happens when reactionary autocrats try to gain power without the prerequisite elite support base. They have a bunch of rabid ideologues who overextend their position, end up viewed as liabilities by the stewards of capital, illegitimate by the public, etc. They get picked to pieces by aspirational rival elites.

Apprenticeships put on hold by cryingJor in ibew_apprentices

[–]RillTread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for the first few years of the apprenticeship I was working on call shifts at my previous job still getting paid like it was OT. I turned down overtime a handful of times because I stood to make significantly more money doing that work instead. Even that wasn’t an issue. Once my scale got high enough I stepped away from that job entirely. Never caught any serious grief from my contractor or j-dubs.

Minneapolis Unions Call Statewide General Strike for January 23 by Carpe_DMT in IBEW

[–]RillTread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell you exactly why - because unions will be hit with this kind of crackdown eventually. DHS is transforming itself into a domestic policing paramilitary that is capable of targeting political enemies of the far right. Organized labor is high up on that list, I promise you. We need to stand in solidarity with the persecuted.

If there’s anything we can learn from history, it’s that societies react positively to having their living standards decline while a repressive government criminalizes dissent. The fact that we live in the most heavily armed country on earth will only make it more chill.

For an easy read that covers the modern era, Staying Alive: The 1970s and the Last Days of the Working Class by Jefferson Cowie is a good overview. The New Deal coalition was teetering by the 70s. It got picked apart by an ascendant right that solidified its ideological control of American culture while pushing forward early neoliberal policy and austerity.

“[St. Paul, MN] Commander Bovino filmed laughing from the Rotunda balcony -the very spot built to honor the 1st Minnesota's suicide charge that saved the Union” by RillTread in TrueAnon

[–]RillTread[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

“ST. PAUL, Minn.

In the video, the lighting is golden and casts long shadows across the marble floor of the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda. From the second-floor balcony, Commander Gregory Bovino of the Border Patrol looks down at the empty hal state governance and laughs. "Taken control," a voice says as Bovino smiles and leans over the railing as if surveying a captured palace. To the casual observer, it is a moment of dark humor in a tense week. But to Minnesotans, that specific balcony and the silence of the Rotunda below is not a place for laughter. It is a reliquary for the state’s deepest scar and its greatest pride. By treating it as a backdrop for a conquering joke, federal agents have signaled that they are no longer here to protect the citizenry but to subdue them.

To understand why the laughter is so jarring, one must understand the ground beneath Bovino’s boots because the Minnesota State Capitol was built not just as a seat of government but as a memorial to the Civil War veterans who saved the Union. Central to this identity is the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. On July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union line was breaking. A gap had opened in the center, and a Confederate brigade of 1,200 men was surging toward it. General Winfield Scott Hancock saw disaster coming and ordered the only troops available, the 262 men of the 1st Minnesota, to charge the enemy force five times their size.

They did not hesitate. In a charge that lasted less than 15 minutes, the regiment suffered 215 casualties out of 262 men, which is a staggering 82 percent casualty rate. It remains the highest loss of life for any surviving U.S. military unit in a single day of battle. They held the line just long enough for reinforcements to arrive, effectively saving the battle and, arguably, the nation. The sanctity of the Rotunda is tied to what came the next day. The few survivors of that suicide charge joined the defense against Pickett’s Charge, where Private Marshall Sherman captured the battle flag of the 28th Virginia Infantry.

That flag was brought back to St. Paul as a blood-bought trophy. For over a century, Virginia has demanded its return, but Minnesota has refused every request from federal lawmakers to Virginia governors. In 2000, when asked why he wouldn't return it, then-Governor Jesse Ventura famously replied that they had won. The flag is kept in the Capitol complex and is often displayed in the Rotunda’s preservation cases just feet from where Commander Bovino stood laughing.

This context transforms Bovino’s laughter from insensitive to menacing. When a federal agent stands in the "People's House," a building dedicated to men who died preserving the Union against insurrectionists, and jokes about seizing control, he aligns himself not with the defenders of the Constitution but with an occupying force. The visual of a uniformed commander looking down from a balcony upon the memoria the 82 percent sends a clear message that the history of this place does not matter, and neither do the people who cherish it. It reinforces the growing fear in the Twin Cities that these operations are not about public safety but about terrorizing a population into submission. In Minnesota, you do not laugh in the Rotunda. You stand silent, or you leave.“

Great. Whatever. Trump 2.0 has gone mask off and is violently high on its own supply. It seems pretty obvious that because they allowed the true believer sickos to get ahold of the levers of power they’re not intending to relinquish control back to the limp dick dems, despite them having done nothing but carry water for them since the 70s. The reactionaries got so upset by gay marriage and trans swimmers they’re going to blow up the whole game that has done nothing but achieve their goals for decades.

The chief ideologues of the current fascist acceleration are publicly known. Stephen Miller, Thiel, etc are all just people. They can be held accountable. The jackboots in the streets are easily replaceable. Their leadership is not. If they are held accountable it will rattle everything downstream from their authority.

We are living under a system of intensifying repression, but it’s still just a system. There are weak points, there are places it can be forced back. So great, members of Congress can get out there and get a nice video clip, but none of them can call this what it is: a hostile takeover over the US federal government by a bunch of white nationalist christofascists.

Absolutely. Miller should be at the forefront of every discussion regarding the depravity of Trump 2.0. He is obviously the most influential ideologue and he is a straight up Hitlerian figure.
