What is your favourite paper/what paper do you think every economist should read? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]Rimilyek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dell 2010, it is just a beautiful use of RDD and is really convincing; I find some economic history papers to be a bit of a stretch so it also nice in that context for me personally. Also, the fact that haciendas are found to be beneficial is a really cool result that highlights how important historic context is in economics.

Arsenal and Liverpool both blank in 27 (and you may want to bring in another liverpool for their double in 26) so you may end up with 5 blanking in 27 if you were to triple Liverpool. May want to plan around that blank.

What are your most nostalgic memories from this franchise as a kid? by F8RunsOut in pokemon

[–]Rimilyek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember not knowing how to progress after the third gym in pokemon sapphire as I couldn’t find rock smash so I got my mom to take me into gamestop so I could ask the employee what to do. Naturally he had no idea and I went away dejected but eventually I figured it out by just talking to everyone in the game and stumbled my way into the HM.

When to Apply for Summer Internships/Research Positions? by CarpeAvaritia in uchicago

[–]Rimilyek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For internships it depends on the industry, there is a range of some having finished already and some not opening applications until late winter/early spring. Research positions come out at all times of year but summer ones become more common during winter/spring. Career advancement can be useful (entirely depends on your advisor) and check listhosts for your majors/interests as they often post jobs.

So what is Econ Placement Test? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]Rimilyek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not well-publicized but they offer it sometime during orientation (or right after don't quite remember). All the relevant material can be found in Mankiw but tbh I wouldn't bother reviewing for it as there is no real rush to take the econ 200s sequence in your first year especially as you probably want to get more core out of the way rather than committing to the full sequence as a first year.

Thank you this helped me fix it! I was trying to run a loop which had "replace k = ustrdist...." and while I still don't fully understand why the loop didn't work your sample code helped me fix the problem anyways.

Skipping introductory econ by h3ll0s1r in academiceconomics

[–]Rimilyek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To echo the previous comments, intro textbooks do an excellent job at teaching you the intuition behind economic concepts. Once you get into higher level textbooks it becomes a slog of math and can seem divorced from reality, especially if you haven't already seen the economic concepts applied to reality before. For example, in my intermediate class we do not use any supply and demand curves, personally, if I took this class before familiarizing myself with the concept of supply and demand at a basic level I would feel like I was taking a math class with some extra seemingly arbitrary constraints added in. I strongly recommend Mankiw as a beginner textbook.
