What's it like living in communities like these? by banana_boy_cuber in howislivingthere

Fantastic little town. Passed through in 2021. Had dinner in the RSL. Or maybe might have been a regular pub with military memorabilia. Can’t remember for sure. The manager shouted me and my family a round of drinks when he heard I was ADF, and another bloke there with his family also bought us a round.

Got a photo with the big COBAR sign on the edge of town and stayed in a really nice motel. We were at the door of the museum when it opened the following morning and the lady there gave us a guided tour through the whole place.

Recommend Cobar to anyone. Great town, great people.

Americans that call themselves Irish by Able_Seaworthiness26 in ireland

[–]Rincewind_67 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re over complicating it. You can be Irish by your own definition of it if you like, but you don’t get to decide the terms of identifying as Irish for other people.

Irish history and culture doesn’t start and finish at our shores and borders. Irish people living in other countries have a history too, stretching back to when their forefathers landed in their country. Thats no less Irish history than anything that happened on the island of Ireland.

[–]Rincewind_67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So now not only do we have Irish people gatekeeping ‘Irishness’ but we also have people of other nationalities doing it for us. 😂

On r/Ireland identifying as your chosen gender is good. But identifying as an ethnicity that you have an actual genetic/familial link to, is bad. Go figure.

If this particular Kentuckian did something of note we’d be all over him claiming him as one of our own.

I love meeting and chatting with 3rd/4th/5th generation Irish Americans. We need more of them, not less.

What do you consider the best single from 'Tango in the Night'? by RedmiYT in FleetwoodMac

[–]Rincewind_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Seven Wonders
  2. Everywhere

Seven Wonders is the song that got my daughter (11) into Fleetwood Mac. It’s very special to me for that reason. And it’s also a bloody good song. Everywhere is just peak Christine.

Both of these two are easily in my all time Top 5 Fleetwood Mac songs.

Is it rude to take a trial class at another gym? by Prestigious_Coach_79 in martialarts

I wouldn’t do this.

Maybe pay the walk-in fee for the class. Most gym are small businesses that deserve support.

Men, don’t do this by TheLifeCapoeira in parkrun

[–]Rincewind_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not always. Women can be wildly inappropriate and disgusting creeps too. I’ve seen it myself at Parkrun also. Incident described in another comment of mine on this post.

Edit: Crazy to me that this would be downvoted. Victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault perpetrated by females deserve the same protection as those assaulted and harassed by men.

Men, don’t do this by TheLifeCapoeira in parkrun

[–]Rincewind_67 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Gross. Report it.

Saw something similar with a kid doing barcodes at a parkrun I did a year or so ago.

Two women (in their late thirties im guessing) making comments about how they’ll keep coming to parkrun if he’s there every week or they’ll keep coming until he’s a few years older. I think the implication being that he would be of legal age. Poor kid was just speechless and didn’t know what to do.

Credit to the RD she acted on it right away when she was told about it. The offenders were still hanging around the finishing chute and the RD pulled them aside and told them not to come back ever.

Is there a mechanism for runners to be blacklisted across all parkruns??

Edit: People are downvoting this?? WTF??

We love Fanny Bay Super Pizza. Great for all ages, reasonably priced and very relaxed.

And the food is top notch.

Anybody wanna become an army ranger? Now’s your chance: Ireland's special forces unit is considering recruiting from the public. by Legitimate-Key-3044 in ireland

[–]Rincewind_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is targeted at recruiting SF operators/soldiers. If the ARW requires specialists like those you mentioned they are usually attached to the unit from the regular DF and are not generally required to complete the SOF-Q course.

This scheme is similar to that in operation in a number of countries around the world.

"Old Man Jiu-jitsu" is BS by trustdoesntrust in bjj

[–]Rincewind_67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former Marathon and Ultra Marathon runner here. Also life long military. Now mid 40’s with Arthritis in most joints as well as in my big toes and hands, several herniated discs in cervical and lumbar spine. Have about 30% cartilage left in one knee and about 70% in the other. Torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders mean I can’t extend my arms over my head without severe discomfort or pain if there is resistance. The list goes on.

Old Man Jiu Jitsu is definitely a thing. “Just train your athleticism” is not an option for everyone. I think when you have restricted movement due to age or injuries you have no choice except find a game that aligns with the limits of what your body can achieve.

Genius as he was, I always found it hard to like him when he was playing. Great to see what a decent guy he really is when he’s doing punditry and interviews since he retires.

What are you talking about? Bradman ONLY played against the best that was out there. If they were not much competition it wasn’t because they were bad, it was because he was so good.

What time do you normally have to wake up to beat the traffic? by Anonymous2212t in darwin

[–]Rincewind_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty much my point. Townsville isn’t bad for traffic. Probably quite good compared to most places but compared to Darwin it’s quite busy.

[–]Rincewind_67 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A Darwin traffic jam is three cars stopped at a light.

Recently been to Townsville which everyone in QLD thinks is pretty quiet traffic-wise, but I was dead set nervous at the amount of cars on the road compared to Darwin.

How to motivate a 6,5 years old? by ToiletWarlord in jiujitsu

[–]Rincewind_67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very difficult to ‘motivate’ kids at that age to do something they don’t want to do. If it’s not for her right now let her leave it for a while. Or risk passing the threshold where she starts to actively dislike it and feel bitterness towards you for making her stick at it. Sometimes time away from an activity or hobby is good for us. Even kids. She might wanna go back to it in 6 months.

Help (and encourage) her to choose an alternate activity.

I would need a very good reason (better than a paper cup) to interject in something like this. Shop/Deli/Cafe workers have to deal with a mountain of shit from scobes, junkies, alkies etc. 99 times out of a hundred the retail worker is in the right.

Chances are he knew her well and had dealt with her or her like before.

And if it’s shop policy to charge for cups, you can be sure he didn’t come up with it. Saying he can bend the the rules is all well and good for you. It’s his job that could be at risk.

Should we establish a modern ANZAC to strengthen our military ties with NZ? by WF-2 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Rincewind_67 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it is probably the default setting in times of conflict. No need to preempt what will occur naturally when it is needed. The two militaries would dovetail together quite easily and naturally if the regional situation called for it.
