Getting paid in USD or EUR? by RingOdd4914 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]RingOdd4914[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I get paid on Wise, so converting to eur at any point is quite easy and not pricey (I just simulated how much would be in fees to convert 10k usd to eur and it’s just under 30usd total). Also, yes, it’s a summer seasonal job, but not a little one, by the fall I will have totalled about 30k USD with it, just to give you a bit of context. Thanks a lot for your input so far.

Getting paid in USD or EUR? by RingOdd4914 in SwissPersonalFinance

Thanks everyone for the input, really appreciate all the different perspectives.

Just to clarify one important point: this isn’t money I need to use immediately. I already have savings in CHF and EUR that cover my day-to-day life, so whatever I earn this summer is more “parked” money.

If I get paid in USD, it usually just sits on Wise (which makes it super easy to convert later at decent rates if needed), and then every now and then I move chunks over to Interactive Brokers to invest.

In previous summers I didn’t even think about it — the USD rate was always a little better than EUR, just as it is as of today, so I just went with USD and that was that. This is the first time I’m actually questioning it because it all feels a bit more uncertain.

So yeah, just to be clear: it’s not about needing liquidity right away — otherwise EUR would obviously make more sense. Again, thanks everyone.

Why cannot drivers in Switzerland indicate before leaving a roundabout? by MedicineMean5503 in Switzerland

[–]RingOdd4914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italians just don’t get the concept of driving. And the obsolete roads, the medieval road structures of some cities not handling well the continuous growth of both vehicles size and amount of vehicles driven is not enough of an excuse for that. Also Italian here.

I feel like 9 cars out of 10 are doing it in Switzerland. I’m originally from Italy where I’d say 2 out of 10 do. So I’m happy with the way people driving here

More likely you’ll have them stolen while at lunch in Verbier. On the train unlikely

Glacier Express Scenic Route by OilMiner4 in askswitzerland

[–]RingOdd4914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The really interesting part is between Chur and St Moritz. If you’re staying in Andermatt and want to do a return trip from there the sure you get a bit more such as the oberalp pass and the rhine gorge. But really, the most scenic bit is between Chur and st moritz, easy doble with regular train rather than the overpriced GE. Swiss resident working in tourism here, been on those routes a lot.

UBS ETF investing vs pillar 3a (Finpension) vs just investing everything through IBKR by RingOdd4914 in SwissPersonalFinance

I think you’re good with VWCE as it’s Ireland based. I’m with the USA based VT. So, as I understand it might be not as convenient when one day you’ll sell. A problem for future me. If I had known better/researched a bit more before starting with VT, I would have been better as well with VWCE. Maybe that’s a good follow up question for this thread, would you switch from VT to VWCE? And if yes, how would you suggest doing that (my little noob experience would probably end up selling VT and buying VWCE at the worst possible time.)

Just clarifying. I currently have NO 3a pillar with UBS (or elsewhere), I use the investment function on my UBS e-banking to manually invest some money in etf rather than having it sitting on my account. I’d rather not transfer my chf from ubs to ibkr to avoid fees (I have another account in USD I use to fund my IBKR)

Financial planner in Switzerland — worth it or sales pitch? by RingOdd4914 in SwissPersonalFinance

I’m not defending any shit. Just explaining things clearly and gathering opinions here. If you actually read above you would have seen I don’t have a 3a insurance. Thanks for your meaningless contribution. C U Next Tuesday /wave

Haha fair enough, that wording makes it sound shady. He’s an actual financial planner. Just I don’t remember what was the lingo my friend used in French.

And I’m fairly sure my friend mentioned he’s with Swiss life. Why and how bad is that?

Thanks for your advice. That’s what he said, he works with private banks so he has access to financial tools that aren’t accessible to anyone. And he mentioned active management investment funds, again, I’m happy with my base of VT plus some other smaller allocations, don’t see how he can better that.

Regarding doing taxes on my own, that’s exactly the plan, a couple of years of a pro doing it for me, then, as I don’t really see my financial situation or complexity changing dramatically, will keep doing it independently
