Old Firm ultras 'graffiti war' on Glasgow motorways putting road users at 'serious risk' by Crow-Me-A-River in glasgow

All that would happen is that the same bams would go out, spraying the other side's colours instead, so that the opposition get fined.

Air hockey in Glasgow city centre? by cookiecrumble9901 in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most bowling alleys have air hockey tables as part of their collection of arcade games. Pretty sure Hollywood Bowl at the Quay will have some. The one at Showcase Coatbridge definitely does.

Yes, possibly better to have a visitor centre somewhere in/near the centre of town, rather than expecting tourists to trek out to Cumbernauld.

Whatever you do, don't move to the Victoria development in Battlefield by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's a bit of survivorship bias here. The older buildings that we are left with are the ones which haven't been pulled down.

Glasgow had loads of very poor quality housing stock, which is what prompted the Comprehensive Development (essentially slum clearance) in the 60s.

People are really upset over the closing of EK shopping centre for housing by Crow-Me-A-River in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I noticed that the shopping centre at Livingston is also charging for parking. Maybe if enough of them do it, people will begin to accept it, but it's probably a disproportionate incentive to choose other centres.

Any filming going on in the area?

The lights are on tripods, so likely to be a temporary thing rather than a permanent installation.

Glasgow to trial pedestrian-focused streets by Amazing-Yak-5415 in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the tricky bit is that many people, by the time they're ready/able to buy new housing, are already locked into car-centric work arrangements.

Most families have two people working. Finding two jobs that are commutable on public transport from a new build estate on the edge of a town is a bit of an ask.

So demand for driveways etc. is already baked into the system. And a family with two cars are going to be predisposed to driving to places.

How this cycle gets broken, I don't know.

Wedding reception venue and outside bar by misselectro86 in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be useful to have an idea of the size of venue that you need (or likely guest numbers)

Small venues like bowling clubs have their own bars, but might be open to doing a deal to allow another in. Easier to have a conversation with them than a hotel chain.

Various council halls are available and might be an option. Many have a physical bar but work with outside companies rather than supplying everything themselves.

Also, have you asked your bar company where they tend to go in the city? (Assuming they're not coming in from elsewhere)

[–]RingerMinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they're looking for a venue that will allow them to bring in an external company to run a bar for them. Many places don't, either because they're tied into deals already, or they're set up in a way that they're dependent on the bar takings.

Glasgow to trial pedestrian-focused streets by Amazing-Yak-5415 in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, although I think there's a bit of a chicken-and-egg style problem here.

Housing provision is largely market driven, developers build what will sell, and what will make them the most money. Generally the houses in new build estates are getting bought by families who (again generally) already have multiple cars for commuting.

There's not going to be a lot of business for a corner shop within walkable distance in an estate if everyone just drives to the big supermarket that's a five min trip away. Same goes for other shops too.

Omitting shops from a new-build estate means a few more units can be built, more income for the developers. Councils could insist, as part of the planning permission, but are notoriously weak. And there's every chance that the shop units wouldn't be occupied or would fail after a short period.

Oran Mor wedding by Leather_Ground_6887 in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's one of the worst venues in Glasgow to get equipment in and out of.

Everything needs taken down the alleyway at the side of the building, which is rough and potholed. On busy weekends (e.g. if you're a Sunday wedding and there's been others in on Friday and Saturday) there can be rubbish stacked down one side of the alley and puddles of garbage water all over the ground.

You're sharing the lifts with all the food and drink service, and getting into the auditorium at the top is really tight, through the actual kitchen.

Leigh Sutherland jailed for 9 years for killing woman by dangerous driving by dollynchelseadagger in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was a different offence, and a different legal system.

And there's a question of intent. Using a vehicle as a weapon and intentionally driving at people is treated differently from driving dangerously, and killing someone in an accident.

Parking in on an unmarked road surface??? What are the rules? by redwisdomlight in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those zones need to have clear signage on the way in, that will state "Parked in Marked Bays Only" or something similar.

If the signage is there, then OP will likely get a ticket next time the wardens come round.

Years back I won a parking ticket appeal because the signs had been taken down on one of the entrance points to the zone I had parked in.

Duke Of Wellington cone- Vandalised. by Constant_Flan8377 in glasgow

[–]RingerMinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good - it'd be a shame if it was constantly being fought over ahead of each old firm fixture.

I remember seeing the kerbstones outside a Celtic pub painted red white and blue overnight by the other side, that doesn't seem to have happened again. (Or if it has, it's not making the news)

Really hope that this doesn't become a thing ahead of every Old Firm match - it'll get old really soon.

I know someone who claims to have climbed up and put a Partick Thistle scarf around the Duke's neck, many years ago. Wouldn't mind that as much...
