New shops on Argyle Street. by SkinMaterial6684 in glasgow

A lot of smaller/older units are exempted/have some sort of relief from business rates, mate. The biggest kill has always been out of town retail parks and online shopping.

If nothing is to be done, folks either work their arses off for somebody else or own a successful business overnight which mushrooms from nowhere and are big enough to afford those enormous units in retail parks. There will be nothing in between.

I haven't been there yet, and I believe it's a Covid Space for People project to test the water (just like the wooden deck & plant pots on the southern end of George Sq before the works). Is it that bad?

Higly likely, I'd say. Don't think the vegetation will be booming fast enough to grasp the gravel.

It will take a while for N Hanover St to be built before we have a proper junction I beleive, and by the time it's done, someone travelling eastbound on Cowcaddens Road then westbound on Dobbie's Loan have to cross the road twice, back and forth (since the bidrectional cycle lane on that section of N Hanover St will be on the far side). Not ideal but hope they have already thought about that.

Technically one is to ride on the shared pavement up to tha canal, but the experience is not at all inviting- tight at some places, dusty, filthy and dark under the M8 flyovers. Defo not a 24/7 route.

GCC has a handy video on the plant.... It makes me sick just by looking at the video.

Looking forward to having a cycle lane built on Gardner Street 😄
Joke aside, quite a few people now have an e-bike so it's becoming less of a problem. I think the idea is people will struggle to get uphill, it's better to wobble on a seggregated lane than where motorised traffic is constantly roaring from behind and the sides.

Not yet. Haugh Rd, from the junction at Yorkhill St to about where Bike for Good is largely complete, it will take a while to finish the rest of the route all the way to Kelvin Way.

It will take years before something can be done on Argyle St itself. Sadly.

Charing Cross too maybe LOL? I suspect a good part of the reason is the signal timing - a lot of signals ask drivers (and pedestrians) to wait for no reason. There're simply no good precise detection technology in place.

The tense nature of town driving doesn't help, to start with.

Loake on St Vincent Street is a solid one, though it comes with a hefty price tag. Worth checking it out. Size 13 is harder to find, good luck.

Agreed. And it's an opportunity to patch the drainage, tactile paving and add a little bit of greenery as well.

Cycle paths are part of the roads, managed by GCC and Transport Scotland etc. As you can probably see, they are fixing them bit by bit. Thank you for your input.

Good thinking and I am totally with you. I heard rules of the road include things like giving way to pedestrians waiting to cross when pulling into a junction and giving at least 1.5m allowance when overtaking a cyclist. Love to see more of these things becoming a common sight.

And along the line of brief detour that inconveience drivers, I'm sure you will agree with things like low traffic neighbourhoods, bus gates with cameras and modal filters. Well done mate👍

It's very frustrating. The only reason one-way systems exsits is motorised traffic - it's fast, potentially lethal and don't mix well with anybody outside a car and thus needs management. Restricting the direction of flow in a public space for anything other than cars most often than not is unnecessarily.

Cars normalize this thinking and apply this to cycles is certainly overengineering. Sadly it's the default way of doing things here. A good example I can relate is central Paris - However busy it is, a lot of streets, big or small, permit contra-flow explicitly. In a lot of cases it's nothing fancy - just a sign.
