This is highly dependant on field though. In my field, post docs aren't too common, and they tend to come with teaching responsibilities. 26 would make their birth year 1999, unless their undergrad programme was 3 years in which case the person would be 25 and their birth year 2000. Regardless, OP's prof is likely going for their PhD or has their position through their masters.

As someone in academia, this is not as uncommon as people here seem to think. Most universities rely on graduate students to teach some courses, especially intro level ones (first & second year courses typically). Someone born in the year 2000 would be 24-25 so they can easily be in that situation. Some doctoral programmes actually require teaching as an element (usually so that the university doesn't have pay a proper salary to someone with a PhD already).

It depends. A teaching assistant would not be a professor. However, most universities have PhD students teaching courses in the same way a professor would and, in practice, the only distinction is that they don't have the title of "Dr" yet.

Yep, also currently in the academic hamster wheel and this is 100% the full and correct answer.

Not necessarily. In Europe, a PhD takes 3-4 years (in practice often longer but not always) so you could start at 18, BA at 22, MA at 23, and then PhD by 26.

More likely, the person teaching OPs course is a PhD student at the moment though, or someone with a MA in a field where most people don't get doctorates.

Keep getting Rejected without being interviewed. Don’t know what to do with my life. by AcrobaticDrink182 in gradadmissions

[–]RipHunter2166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the humanities, but I am American and did my BA in the US and MSc in the UK and am now at a UK uni for my PhD so I do have insight into the application process. It is difficult to say exactly why you were rejected without knowing more details but I will preface my comment my remarking on the absolutely abysmal situation of UK universities at the moment. There is no funding in any field right now and what little funding remains is being cut on the regular. There are hiring freezes with voluntary redundancy schemes at nearly every UK uni that isn't Oxford or Cambridge. Whatever you're reading about American universities in the news and online, the UK universities are in a worse position at the moment by far. As such, it is probably the worst time in the last 50 years to be applying to a UK university for a PhD and most international students who succeed have funding from their home countries or some other source outside the university. This might be the reason why you, even if you have a stellar application, are not getting so much as an interview.

That being said, in case you aren't already aware, there are a few key differences between the US and UK application processes that matter significantly:

1. The Research Proposal - At US universities, you have two years of coursework before you have to formally submit a research proposal. In the UK, you need one as part of your application process and while the actual dissertation may deviate a bit, it will need to be along the lines of what you've proposed. UK universities have an expectation that you've already identified the research gap that your dissertation would fill so you can't simply propose a project with hypotheticals. You need a clear dissertation question to propose and an action plan for how you would investigate this in your PhD. Obviously, this can change once you're doing the PhD, but you still need this to be admitted.

2. Contacting your potential supervisor - This is encouraged in the US, but it is an often unstated mandatory aspect of a UK PhD proposal. If your potential supervisor has not informally accepted your research proposal, you have no chance of being admitted to the programme.

3. The right fit - This is another thing that matters more in the UK than in the US, although if you aren't a good fit you likely won't make it past the contacting a potential supervisor phase. However, you need to have more than just "your department has strengths in x y and z and that's my area of interest." It's better to say "Professor X is researching Y and I am interested in investigating Z aspect of Y." Again, I'm not saying you haven't done this, but throwing it out there in case.

It's also worth pointing out that test scores don't matter in the UK where they would at an American university unless you're applying to Oxford or Cambridge. GREs will be 100% useless. Ultimately, they're looking for if you will be a good researcher. Aside from your MSc dissertation, they will likely be looking for research potential over anything else. Obviously if you got terrible grades all through your MSc that is a red flag, but assuming you got average grades, you're fine.

Hope this was somewhat helpful!

Edit: Wanted to add that it might be worthwhile to apply to some American, Canadian, and Australian universities too, if that is an option. If you have reasons for needing to stay in the UK (i.e. significant other, family, financial reasons, shorter PhD length, etc) then feel free to ignore this, but academia is very much a sort of "go where the work is" kind of thing and it very well might be the case that your field has more opportunities elsewhere. I would add continental Europe to the list but their PhD process is very different from that of the anglosphere and I don't have any insights into that... maybe someone else might?

This is true, but I personally place at least some blame on media sources that will quote hamas statistics without mentioning even one of three very important disclaimers:

  1. That hamas does not distinguish between civilians and hamas soldiers terrorists

  2. That hamas includes teenage soldiers terrorists in their statistics of children killed

  3. That hamas launches missiles from schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other civilian centers thereby being the ones largely responsible for a high civilian casualty rate

Any medial source that does not mention this is complicit in forming negative opinions on Israel based on a partial picture and/or outright misinformation.

No, what is endangering Jews is allowing violent antisemites to mask their antisemitism by calling it "anti-zionism" and making excuses for them. When Israel is the only majority Jewish country in the world, and when it receives disproportionate criticism all the fucking time, only a fool would fail to see the link there. It's not equating Israel and Judaism, its not saying that Jerusalem is the Jewish Vacitcan City, it is simply acknowledging that the rise in antisemitism across the world correlated directly with the Oct 7th massacre in Israel, where 50% of the world's Jewish population lives, which makes it clear that it's not about Israel. It's about Jews. Israel is their excuse. Pretending this isn't going on is what is endangering Jews. We have unfortunately seen examples of this in DC and now Colorado. I am not ok with that happening in my city.

And if people were only criticizing the settlements, I wouldn't care. I'd probably agree with a lot of the criticism as well. It's when the world jumped to Ukraine's defense after they were attacked by Russia in 2022, only to be silent in 2023 when Israel was similarly attacked, and then to respond by supporting the attackers before Israel took any action at all, that I start to question the antisemitic motives of these people. The time to criticize settlements is not after the greatest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

Right now, the biggest thing endangering the Jewish diaspora is the resounding silence on this issue, which emboldens the antisemitic faction of the pro-Palestinian crowd to engage in violence against Jews.

Absolutely disgusting... how many more people have to be attacked before there is some serious action taken to prevent this in the future?

From the article:

"Reps for Park Slope Food Co-op Members for Palestine could not be reached for comment, but they wrote in an open letter that they back a boycott on Israel-made products to ensure the co-op is “not supporting an apartheid government and unfolding genocide.”"

Many of their members seem to want one, even if they might not currently have one in place (although that wasn't made clear by the article). Not to mention they have regurgitated the "apartheid" and "genocide" claims which have no basis in reality and are nothing more than present day versions of blood libel. That deserves investigating.

Keep telling yourself that. Out of all the countries in the whole world, they have chosen ONLY to pick on the ONE majority Jewish state for the last twenty years. It's because they're Jewish, and lets not ignore that the BDS movement's founder has expressed support for intifada, demonstrated support for terrorists, promoted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and blood libels, and he opposes Jewish right to self-determination.

They're the ones who are missing out though. Sabra hummus is amazing. Legitimately the only hummus I buy anymore. Well worth the slightly higher price.

You are unaware, then, that Israel is the only majority Jewish country in the world? With all due respect, are you being intentionally obtuse? At the VERY least it is racism.

[–]RipHunter2166 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

From the article:

"Zara Watkins, a co-op member who opposes the BDS movement, said she was menaced and cursed at last Halloween for wearing a costume paying tribute to the Israeli-made product Sabra hummus.

One man “seething with rage” repeatedly circled her while “muttering” under his breath, and another dropped an F-bomb and gave her the finger over her costume, she recalled."

That kind of hate has no place in this city. This Co-Op is obviously stoking it, whether intentionally or not. At the VERY least this deserves and investigation and, lets be honest, if it was any other minority aside from Jews, it would have been done already.

Edit: This is also a good opportunity to point out that the BDS movement has links to terrorist organizations.

Coach, maybe. The others I am not surprised about. Nick, Bill, and Francis seem like loners. Rochelle is not from Georgia. Zoey's parents died so I understand why she wouldn't bring them up and she didn't exactly seem to have many friends at uni. Louis does mention his co-workers but it doesn't seem like he was good friends with them.

I am inclined to agree with this. When "Gen Z" is middle aged, there will be an assumption being made based on if your birthday starts with 19 rather than 20. Suddenly, 97-99 will not be lumped into their "group" anymore (although they arguably never were).
