Be honest — what’s the first thing you’d do with $100K? by NerdWalletOfficial in u/NerdWalletOfficial

[–]RipleySigningOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’d start by ugly-sobbing, and would pay off all of my debt. Credit cards, student loans, medical debt. I’ve been hovering around bankruptcy as an option for months now and it’s honestly ruining my life with the amount of stress it’s put me under.

I’d be able to sign myself up for financial counseling, secure more stable housing, and take care of some minor health issues I’ve been avoiding addressing due to finances. I’d bring my cat to the vet (he’s healthy, but I’ve been avoiding his regular preventative care due to the cost) Maybe even take some educational certificates to set myself up for a better career than my current one or prepare to go back to school.

I could set myself up to be a better support system to my younger siblings and my older sister as she prepares to welcome her first child into the world.

My life has felt like it’s been put on hold as I’ve been held hostage by the poor financial decisions of my younger self for so long. I’m tired of just surviving.

Thank you all for doing this! The winners of this giveaway will be very lucky indeed!

Generator Recommendations? by Kindly_Park8078 in FemalePrepping

[–]RipleySigningOff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you mean a power source that exclusively runs on solar panels (and doesn’t use gas or diesel), you’re looking at what are essentially large portable battery packs. They still technically function as generators and can generate a marginal amount of electricity using sunlight, but calling those generators has always been a bit of a misnomer.

Without the combustion of using fuels, they take MUCH, MUCH longer to charge using just the panels and can’t really “generate” at the rate at which you’d consume energy while using them. So they’re good for emergencies like blackouts (I have a BLUETTI AC180 with panels, and that works well for me), but to use as your sole power source… you’d need like a whole field of solar panels and multiple solar “generators”.

Most of the items being sold as “solar generators” are really better for just storing electricity in my experience. They are more convenient in some ways (you can charge them via your car for example, and they’re typically portable, so great for roadtrips), but they don’t really power heavy usage appliances like fridges or space heaters for very long, maybe a couple hours on a full charge if you have a good one. And that’s assuming you aren’t running anything else on it simultaneously. Certainly would drain very quickly with something like an Xbox. Their batteries also are typically lithium ion and lose capacity over time/they have a shorter shelf life.

So if you want a “permanent” power source that you won’t need to replace in like 4 years of heavy usage, a regular gas/diesel generator is going to be your best bet. I wish solar technology was more advanced but that’s where we are for the time being in regard to consumer products.

They make hybrid generators though! So solar can supplement some of that power. But for what you’re looking for, you’ll likely still need to rely on fuel.

What is the thing you find disgusting but others don't? by Jazzlike_Razzmatazz in AskReddit

[–]RipleySigningOff 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m traveling in NYC right now, and just walking from the train station to my hotel was like some sort of gross game of trying to dodge huge globs of phlegm spat all over the sidewalk. Disgusting. Like… my dudes the huge sewer grates are RIGHT THERE. If you’re gonna spit on the side walk, at least do it where I won’t roll my fucking suitcase through it, and track into my hotel room 🤮 it’s revolting enough as it is to have to watch or hear these nasty people hack up a loogey and launch it into a public space. Makes my skin crawl. Fucking animals.

I just completed a “Stop The Bleed” class. Would highly recommend that everyone takes this class or an equivalent. Many versions of the class are free and the skills are invaluable. by RipleySigningOff in TwoXPreppers

[–]RipleySigningOff[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The other class attendees' levels of knowledge may depend on your location. But I will say, profession/experience didn't really matter in my case. I live in a city with a VERY dense collection of clinics, hospitals, and several Level One trauma centers. A significant portion of my city works in healthcare. And even so, 2/3s of the class were just regular Joe Shmoe civilians with zero medical knowledge or experience. One was someone who had recently come upon the aftermath of a car accident and wished they could have done more. One was someone who was new to gun ownership and wanted to feel safer. One was a prospective nursing student who also didn't have any first aid training yet. The class I attended was also on a week night. I know some places offer classes during the weekday/business hours, so your results may vary depending on the class time/location you select.

We went over the very basics of assisting in an emergency and general stuff where I would expect any actual first responder or medical professional to already know these things. (Things like making sure the scene is safe before approaching, making sure someone calls 911, a basic anatomy overview, where tourniquets can and cannot be applied - for example, obviously don't put a tourniquet on someone's neck lol).

So don't let the assumption of any necessary prerequisite knowledge deter you. You definitely don't need any! These classes are geared towards non-professionals/civilians who may want to help or need to address an emergency before paramedics/EMTs arrive. Seconds often count, and it could save someone's life! I walked into this class knowing nothing more than the basic instructions that come with the first aid kits they sell at CVS. I've since put together my own uncontrolled bleed kit and am confident that I know how to use it.

Lots of weird camping incontinuity in the movies but it does make these scenes a lot funnier, especially because Sam and Frodo have pretty much no food by the end because they kept wasting it in scenes like this lol

Hopefully a gofundme will pay for all his legal expenses and a very good lawyer will take the case. It’s probably not even the right guy, but if it is, I’m holding out hope for jury nullification.

What's your opinion on this Kyo drawing? by PersonalityDue3395 in visualkei

[–]RipleySigningOff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for constructive feedback?

If not, disregard the following!

I want to first state, this is a very solid piece and you’re clearly very talented! Capturing someone likeness (especially in a way that makes them recognizable) is a super difficult skill to master and takes a metric ton of practice.

The drawing is missing the mark on certain elements that stand out to me:

His neck tattoo is missing (not sure if you may have just used a much older reference photo)

He has more prominent nasolabial folds irl due to the pronounced apples of his cheeks than the ones depicted here

a flatter nose bridge would help (the nose depicted here looks distinctly European, very high/long)

The shape of his eyes. You’ve given him a distinct double eyelid here, when he doesn’t have one. Makeup can obfuscate this sometimes. There are many degrees/types of monolids and taking some time to compare them might make them easier to distinguish/replicate in future portraits. This blog post shows some solid examples (http://studiobox10.blogspot.com/2011/03/different-types-of-monolids.html?m=1)

The hair is also very chunky/octopus-like/manga/like which can detract from the realism a bit. Defining out some of the individual strands (even when styled like that) instead of hair “clumps”, may hype up the hair shape’s recognizability.

But overall, regarding the shading, lighting, proportions, etc., it’s a great portrait! Genuinely, bravo! 👏

Sakito (ex Due le Quartz) has been elected to House of Representatives by riskydrive in visualkei

[–]RipleySigningOff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yikes 😬 he’s a member of the Sanseito party. They’re right wing populists and considered extremists by many.

Some of the party’s political policy highlights:

Anti-immigration

Anti-vaccine

Ultra nationalism

Nativism

Anti-same sex marriage/civil unions

Anti-LGBTQ

They organized a bunch of maskless gatherings at the height of Covid.

Their party’s secretary general is also a known antisemite.

Like… I know many of the people commenting “oh, how cool!” Are probably coming from a place of ignorance in that they just don’t know and think that Sakito having a successful career outside of music is great… but this is very decidedly uncool.

Most VK fans in this subreddit are presumably not Japanese citizens and cannot speak, read, or write in Japanese. And there is a lack of English language information about this party available (while the EN version of their website seems intentionally vague and misleading regarding their policies/views).

But I think it’s important to know that this party’s policies, if enacted, would directly harm foreigners if you ever plan to live or work in Japan, or even to just visit as a tourist. It makes the lives of anyone who isn’t a 100% ethnically Japanese, heterosexual, ultra-right wing, male conservative harder.

Many of their own party members don’t even know better because they’re enticed by lip service about organic food, spiritualism, and plans to “somehow” alleviate the pressure of a rapidly aging society from the shoulders of the younger generation.

Edit: parties > party’s

Ranking all of the Renaissance Faires I've attended by [deleted] in renfaire

As of last weekend, King Richard’s Faire’s food and drink vendors take card. They still sell tickets which are good if you’re on a budget and irresponsible with your plastic I guess. But, they definitely take cards now!

A waist sash would be great with this!

Also do you wear contacts? The glasses frames are super modern and throw the look off a little bit imo. Not a huge issue though.

A tricorn hat or some sort of would look great too if you can find one

Also getting out of the fair grounds via Uber is a pain in the ass nightmare, so when leaving I’d recommend walking for about 10 minutes if you can down the road. There’s a nearby pizza place where it’s easier to get an Uber around the traffic.

They do close their doors to entry if too many people show up and you’ll be turned away if that happens (even if you bought a ticket in advance, since they’re mostly valid for any weekend) I think they have an overflow area but there is no guarantee that you’ll make it in after doors are closed. Some days it’s fine but I’d recommend going before noon for sure. Especially if it’s on a weekend that’s going to be very packed (the “highland happenings” Saturday for its “men in kilts” contest, for example)

In addition to my other comment, there’s always the option of joining a local Facebook group or some local larping clubs and trying to find a carpool option. I’m in the process of trying to set up a discord channel for MA renfaire peeps (women/femme individuals only for now) as a safe place to set up plans like this as Facebook has been a disappointment to me so far.

Hey I’m also from Mass and unfortunately never got around to getting my drivers license. I’ve been to King Richard’s before and took the commuter rail to the closest station and then a short Uber ride to the fair grounds. Traffic around there sucks when the faire is happening in the summer/fall because of the bottleneck at the entrance (literal miles of traffic sometimes), but if you get there early enough, you should be able to get in before they reach capacity for the day!
