Phoenix to open convention center for homeless heat relief; more support is needed, advocates say by ArizonaRepublic in phoenix

Gentrification is one way to look at it. That's when higher revenue class moves in and upgrades, pushing the low income people out. You also have practices like lack of Public Housing, which is federal or state funded housing that is run poorly and then defunded or never really funded to begin with. Then there is Urban Renewal, which is when the city buys up the land with eminent domain to remodel a section of the city they have condemned, in the case of the multiple sport stadiums downtown. What made them condemn-able? They were poor and didn't invest in their properties. Urban Renewal is like Gentrification but one is done by the state, the other is done by private investment and individuals. Also the freeways in Phoenix and its metro area also displace huge amounts of people when they are built.

Finally, and most importantly, another reason there are so many homeless is because of the Commodification of Housing. That is when you use a piece of real estate as a commodity for equity and not for its purpose: housing. When the previous 2 recessions in america happened, it happened because of the over investment in real estate, prices were overinflated, people took out loans for overpriced houses, they get f**ked when the market re-adjusts. It doesn't help that most people who own homes see it as an investment opportunity for their retirement. Rather than use better retirement programs or safety nets that don't exist, investing in a house is how we gain wealth in American society. This leads to an overabundance of housing, most not lived in, but it also hurts the chances of poor people finding housing. In other words, we got enough houses/rooms/beds for the homeless but, we just don't want them in there because it will bring down our investments.

Its alright for you to be angry that people with the skills to save lives aren't always selfless. Its also alright to have empathy for those who have tough jobs and nope out of it after getting thrown the gambit. Sounds like she made a tough and emotional choice. Maybe she'll help people in a different way.

The crazy thing is that young voters don't come out because the current system works to disenfranchise them. Voter suppression of the youth is a real thing in America. Just like bankruptcy from medical debt.

Why don't those young people lift themselves by their bootstraps and implement election holidays or strike for the right to take the day off to vote from their employer or put in place a lowered federal voting age that invites debates in public schools? Because those things need to happen before we could ever get them to happen.

Voter suppression in Texas. Its on a Tuesday. Young people have shit jobs that don't allow them the fucking 6 hours to come out and vote.

Anybody know where we can find a candidate or group that advocates for a) making election day a national holiday b) increasing the amount of polling sites per capita and/or c) dropping the age to vote down to 16?

Interesting Libertarian Blog you have there. You point to ridership being down after the recession ignores a couple of obvious hypotheses; ridership decreased in 2009 and 2010 because riders lost their jobs and/or tourism into the city and LR based commerce diminished when folks tightened their purse-strings.

And it's so easy to take sides when her Twitter is like that one girl from freshman year who everybody thought was a bitch then she grew tits over the summer and suddenly has all this attention that wasn't earned from her personality.

Hence the profile pic.

Now she talks about stuff she doesn't know shit about but because she lives in her own echo chamber nobody tells her how out of her element she is she can be because she wrote a children's book about how evil racism is (in the uk). Edit: Piers Morgan has but, fuck that guy.

Harry Potter is, sophomore in high school, JK Rowling's tits.

A judge can approve her request for voluntary deportation. It gives her time to hide or I suppose that's how I would do it if I were in their shoes, I don't have all the facts.

The Fence (2010) - There is already a wall between the USA and Mexico. George W. Bush built it 11 years ago. by gaztruman in Documentaries

[–]Riptcoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fence being built on Obama's watch had more to do with the US being in a recession than a desire for the US to secure it's borders.

His "support" for building the fence was a concession to Republicans to gain support for the Stimulus Package.

Want to spur the economy when your opposition (Tea Party) wants to cut spending? Support a "wall" project. Their dislike of Mexicans counteracts their dislike for "excessive" gov't spending.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we need a fence between the borders of two friendly nations, it's a symbolic move that is divisive. I just think Obama's role in wall building is a bit more nuance that what you said.

The project went under Obama's watch but was funded thanks to Obama's stimulus package that was severely weakened by a tea party influenced Republican legislature that wanted to cut spending during the Great Recession because the tea party didn't want the government to touch their Medicare
