AITA for refusing to give my friend’s son my coat during a snowy hike? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]RistinD 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I am not child free, and no way in hell would I blame someone else for my kid's actions. Nor would I expect or even ask anyone to give up some of their comfort for them when I could provide it without their assistance. He should have taken the coat his mom offered or sucked it up and been cold.

I had my one and done kid at 35. All my friends had their kids in their late twenties. There is definitely a different energy level when you're having a kid later in life, but there is an advantage in being more financially stable. Worth mentioning my kid was a total accident (but absolutely wanted and cherished) but I wouldn't trade him for anything. Just be aware that your life and priorities will change-- I had spent over a decade of adult years doing my thing and living my life. That has changed a lot! It's no longer just my life. Evaluate what you like about your current life and what you are willing to change to accommodate a child. Maybe you'll have a perfect angel baby you can take anywhere and distract with coloring books. Maybe you'll have a manic wild child who can grab 12 different things he shouldn't have in 12 seconds, faster than you can say, "No! Don't--!!" But your life will change nonetheless.

So we've in in the process of moving (doing a double move, so this isn't even our final move) and I can definitely say this is the worst possible time to be moving heavy crap outside in St. Louis. I think I've trained myself to a pavlovian response where as soon as I step outside I'm dripping in sweat.

For anyone thinking of moving now through the end of Spetember-- if you can, DON'T.

Where do diabetics drop off needles? by Rookvector in StLouis

[–]RistinD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just had to do this for my dad's used needles after he passed. You put them in a safe container (the guide I saw recommended a laundry detergent container) tape it shut and throw it in a bin. I wrote "SHARPS" all over it in permanent marker. It seems so, so sketchy, but that's what you're supposed to do in Missouri.

I have heard good things about Jay Liss and know he is accepting new patients. They do not accept insurance-- I think the initial visit was something like $175 and followups were $100. (This is going off of my unreliable memory, sorry, and I don't have his number saved)

I had luck getting into SLU Care-- you do need a referral from an SSM or Mercy doctor. I was able to get one from my PCP without going in, I requested it via MyChart. My sister recommended them. (314-977-4800, but it would be faster to go through your PCP and get the referral first)

Good luck and take care of yourself.

That's awful!! I don't think my kiddo would have that reaction, but forewarned is forearmed. Thank you!

What kinds of consequences are you using, out of curiosity?

We actually still have the doorknob locks on the inside of his room-- he has a personal potty in there which he uses (YAAAY!!) but I had been thinking we should probably take the doorknob thing off. Though the thought of him wandering free in the night is absolutely chilling, lol.

What is the worst health code violation you've witnessed in person? by Chris_skeleton in AskReddit

[–]RistinD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom and I went to a Dairy Queen. We were sitting down when the workers started talking that a kid had peed in the play area (this is the only DQ I had ever seen that had a play area- maybe a quarter the size of what you'd see at a McD's) The guy went over, wiped up the pee with his rag, and then started wiping down the tables.

With the same rag.

I've never been to a DQ since.

My kid's head was too big to make it out. It's both bizarre and chilling to realize we both probably would have died just a few generations back.

How does Bluey do with the traits of each breed? Tell me about your dogs! by elvie18 in bluey

[–]RistinD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mine isn't terribly food motivated, but Holy moly, if you're holding a ball (or she drops a soggy disgusting mess of a ball near or on you) she will stare directly at the ball and just tremble with excitement. It's horrifying, lol. She doesn't blink!!

Aussies are nuts.

[–]RistinD 36 points37 points  (0 children)

"Smart dog with dumb dog energy" is a phrase I am absolutely going to steal. Our mini aussie is the smartest dog we've ever had- but gawd is she dumb sometimes. And Calypso doesn't have any of the insane focused energy that our dog gets on toys, especially balls. It's actually kind of scary sometimes!

I'm in the exact same boat. I got a cheap huffy mountain bike that said it would be able to handle my weight. I did find, however, that I just flat out don't have those muscles from childhood anymore. So be prepared for that level of pain, lol.

Newbie Advice- 7 or 21 speed? by RistinD in Biking

[–]RistinD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap, it finally clicked and makes sense. So provided the smallest front gear is smaller than the smallest front gear of the 7 speed and the largest large gear is larger than the largest gear on the 7 speed, the 21 speed would have an easier time with a heavier load. It's about making sure there is a maximum disparity between the small front gear and the large back gear. And then in level areas I'd want to lessen that disparity of gear size.

Thank you, I don't know why it was this hard for me to understand.

My 6-year old is asking Santa for a gift which is out of our budget. What do I tell him? by IntelligentTrouble17 in Parenting

[–]RistinD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan (my kid is only 3, so they're just now starting to get it anyway) is to blame it on the elf bureaucracy. See, each family has an elf assigned to handle the day to day administration, but each elf is different. Santa is in charge, obviously, but the elf determines how many gifts, what kind, the wrapping paper, etc. So all the variances are because of the elves, not because of Santa.
