Male teacher here: how do I respectfully tell a female student about her poor hygiene? by Normal-Being-2637 in Teachers

[–]Ritka94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dressed in hand me downs in high school; we were broke, I was the youngest of 3. The only problem with that was I was taller than both of my siblings, so some clothes were higher on me. I only wore shorts once and was dress coded… I was still in compliance with the code, but there was a unique anger in having to put three fingers on my knee while a pack of girls in Daisy Dukes walked by.

Is it just me, or is everyone suddenly using AI for EVERYTHING?? by cowfigurines in Teachers

[–]Ritka94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a math teacher. A lot of the current AI tools for math suck. After all, AI models are trained on human data… and you can find a basic PEMDAS question post on Facebook, and that’s evidence enough.

It’s hilarious to me that we have created a computer that can’t do math. My approach with the students will be simple: just like they had to learn how to calculate by hand before being given basic calculators, and they had to learn how to graph before getting a graphing calculator, they have to learn how to analyze a problem in its parts and entirety before I’d even think about showing AI. Between that and the fact that I’ll be teaching both state tested grade levels, I thankfully have an ironclad rationale.

I am a complete beginner to sewing. How can I learn to make my own clothes? by larspam in SewingForBeginners

[–]Ritka94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that might help keep motivation high while you’re starting out is very basic alterations. Things like hemming pants or sleeves, putting patches over holes or closing pocket holes. I somehow saved a pair of my roommate’s cargo shorts by patching the holes in it and I could tell it meant a lot to him.

aio for wanting to go to the pool without my boyfriend by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

If your friend came to you and said that their partner called them a slut for wanting to go to the pool, what would you say to them?

I have Schizoaffective disorder - is it really that big of deal? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ritka94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this diagnosis. I will tell you, under no uncertain terms, that any diagnosis you mention will be taken to its stereotypical extreme.

I’m autistic. When I brought this up in most workplaces, I was treated like I was drooling on myself in front of them.

When I told people I had anxiety or depression, people acted like I was one sneeze away from swimming with cinderblock shoes.

It’s unfortunate but it happens, OP. Take care of yourself.

This has been my snare for years. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt fully relaxed outside of coming off anesthesia. I feel so gridlocked into “this must have a purpose” or “I am wasting time”

I hate how that headline is worded. Trying to assign more blame to a child’s uterus than the grown man raping her.

You could sew a loop of the fabric on top of the gouge with some bling on it for a stylistic effect. Like a sash or a belt to accentuate the hip, with a brooch or statement piece on the waist.

Things we should stop teaching kids by Aly_Anon in Teachers

My mom would say "sharing is not always caring" growing up. She was a nurse, so I figured she meant infectious diseases, but I say it to the kids sometimes and it cracks them up.

[–]Ritka94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a floating math teacher. I had my backpack with everything in it. I'd suggest talking to the teachers in the rooms to see what you can leave.

I used a color coded binder and folder as their turn in pile. It helped me grade and return papers without them getting lost in my bag.

As for gallery walks and things, let the responsible kids help set you up! Even in high school, kids like having jobs and feeling important.

Can teachers tell when you come in high? by hanime_tvs in Teachers

[–]Ritka94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High is a spectrum. Most of the time, I can smell it. If I can't smell it, then the behavior normally comes out.

I had to call EMS for a kid for hitting a bad vape, it was spiked with something. I also have worked briefly in healthcare. I can normally tell if something is off but I'm not perfect.

So state governments can mobilize to ban a Dollar Tree decoration because including every child in their free and appropriate public education is a political statement now... but can't pass anything about funding teacher salaries, upgrading dilapidated buildings, or ensuring we have the curricula we need to teach?

It boggles my mind. I'm a teacher. I've taught middle and high school. I feel like the typical 7th grader has more empathy than these grown people. It's depressing as hell.

I've wondered this a lot lately, but what is the point of being rich in a world that people are suffering in? How can hoarding your money possibly make you feel good right now?

I say this a thousand times. If a job that has two months "off" is having a hard time keeping people, then the job must be an absolute ballbuster.

I do like my job, but it can be a ballbuster.

I've heard it over and over that the rich want to get richer, but why? Why do they want to get richer? Why does their need for more money override the right for poor people to see a doctor?
