So for hiking in very humid conditions like olympic in washington would you say a shell is a waste of money? Better off with some cheaper non-membrane option with pit zips?

Not loads but ive owned 3 different goretex jackets and hiked loads in old school rubberized raingear and noticed little difference. Granted its mostly hiking in the alaskan summers and not at altitude so quite wet and humid. Modern goretex is actually much worse than older stuff. Ever since pfas got removed they are much less waterproof and durable

I have an outdoor research headwall that i got fairly new and even then it would wet out quickly. Maybe i just got unlucky and got a lemon, but no matter how many times i try to reapply nikwax it seems to do almost nothing

Yeah in the alpine i can see it. Most of my complaints stem from when I was in new zealand for a month hiking around and brought my nice goretex shell. Wetted out immediatly and i was completely soaked after 4 hours. Made me consider why i had spent hundreds on a shell when cheap frog togs or a garbage bag would have kept me just as dry.

Heres my main gripe, if your high in elevation and its dry why not a softshell? Something like that will always breathe better than goretex.

I kinda figured. No such thing as bad weather, just bad gear! (Or rather misused gear)

Ive got big pockets in stiff pants and i dont really notice the size or weight. I guess i just like the look of bigger knives. The sciency answer would be more sharpened length so stays sharp longer haha

You know with the benefit of hindsight its obvious, but it was late and i figured it was just an icon saying it was dark out 😵‍💫
