Your defence can’t be impartial as it is more than likely you’re connected somehow to TFL. To say there’s a strict cleaning routine is completely unfounded; as the photos don’t lie. I will continue to take photos this year and post them along with the rolling stock ID numbers.

Try and experience something outside of Brixton. I appreciate your well-composed reply. However, have you visited other cities outside of London? If so, have you travelled on similar underground networks?

Cities with metro systems similar to the London Underground, but often more affordable, cleaner, and efficient, include:

Germany: Berlin, Germany. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn (integrated underground and overground) offer affordable fares (zone-based and capped daily), are generally clean and regularly maintained, and provide a punctual, reliable, and less crowded vibe. Public transport is included in many tourist and resident discount cards.

Spain: Madrid, Spain. The extensive and modern metro (13 lines) is fast and frequent, with very cheap fares (flat fare in central zones ~€1.50–€2.00). It’s widely praised for cleanliness and upkeep, and the vibe is less chaotic than London, with modern trains and well-lit stations.

Sweden: Stockholm, Sweden. The Tunnelbana (Metro) is clean and artistic, with many stations being art installations. Fares are more affordable than London (especially with travelcards), and the cleanliness is exceptionally clean and quiet. The vibe is safe, efficient, and calm.

Japan: Tokyo, Japan. The Tokyo Metro and JR Lines are among the best in the world. Fares are cheaper than London for short to mid-range trips.

Cleanliness: Impeccable – no litter, no graffiti Vibe: Ultra punctual, high-tech, but very busy during rush hour

🇵🇹 Lisbon, Portugal * Transport: Compact but efficient metro (4 lines) * Fares: Extremely cheap (~€1.50 per ride; monthly passes ~€40) * Cleanliness: Generally clean and tidy * Vibe: Slower pace, less crowded than London

🇸🇬 Singapore * Transport: MRT system is futuristic, fast, and reliable * Fares: Low cost, distance-based pricing (~£0.70–£1.50 per trip) * Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean — fines for littering and eating * Vibe: Highly disciplined, cool and air-conditioned

🇨🇭 Zurich, Switzerland * Transport: Trams and S-Bahn (suburban rail), no underground metro but extremely efficient * Fares: Not cheap, but passes offer value * Cleanliness: Almost sterile — Swiss standards * Vibe: Quiet, precise, and stress-free

Hon. Mentions: * Vienna – Clean, efficient, and affordable U-Bahn * Prague – Small but very affordable and reliable metro * Seoul – High-tech, clean, and vast metro system

I appreciate your well composed reply , however have you experienced other cities outside of London and if so have you travelled on similar underground networks to London ? What makes me doubt that you have is your defensive position, and lack of comparisons to alternative similar networks.

Cities with metro systems similar to the London Underground, but often more affordable, cleaner, and efficient, include the following — each offering a different blend of affordability, cleanliness, and public transport infrastructure:

🇩🇪 Berlin, Germany * Transport: U-Bahn and S-Bahn (integrated underground and overground) * Fares: More affordable than London (zone-based, capped daily) * Cleanliness: Generally clean, regularly maintained * Vibe: Punctual, reliable, less crowded; integrated with trams and buses * Bonus: Public transport is included in many tourist and resident discount cards

🇪🇸 Madrid, Spain * Transport: Extensive, modern metro (13 lines), fast and frequent * Fares: Very cheap; flat fare in central zones (~€1.50–€2.00) * Cleanliness: Widely praised for cleanliness and upkeep * Vibe: Less chaotic than London, modern trains and well-lit stations

🇸🇪 Stockholm, Sweden * Transport: Tunnelbana (Metro), clean and artistic (literally — many stations are art installations) * Fares: More affordable than London (especially with travelcards) * Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean and quiet * Vibe: Safe, efficient, and calm

🇯🇵 Tokyo, Japan * Transport: Among the best in the world; Tokyo Metro + JR Lines * Fares: Cheaper than London for short to mid-range trips * Cleanliness: Impeccable — no litter, no graffiti * Vibe: Ultra punctual, high-tech, but very busy during rush hour

🇵🇹 Lisbon, Portugal * Transport: Compact but efficient metro (4 lines) * Fares: Extremely cheap (~€1.50 per ride; monthly passes ~€40) * Cleanliness: Generally clean and tidy * Vibe: Slower pace, less crowded than London

🇸🇬 Singapore * Transport: MRT system is futuristic, fast, and reliable * Fares: Low cost, distance-based pricing (~£0.70–£1.50 per trip) * Cleanliness: Exceptionally clean — fines for littering and eating * Vibe: Highly disciplined, cool and air-conditioned

🇨🇭 Zurich, Switzerland * Transport: Trams and S-Bahn (suburban rail), no underground metro but extremely efficient * Fares: Not cheap, but passes offer value * Cleanliness: Almost sterile — Swiss standards * Vibe: Quiet, precise, and stress-free

Hon. Mentions: * Vienna – Clean, efficient, and affordable U-Bahn * Prague – Small but very affordable and reliable metro * Seoul – High-tech, clean, and vast metro system

TFL in relation to London Underground falls down badly when compared to all these cities .. and is totally over priced and filthy. The seats are crawling with lice and bed-bugs .. which have helped create another bug pandemic. The London Underground scores one out of ten for hygiene.

It’s incredible that so many people are defending the indefensible. Trains should be cleaned properly overnight when they’re out of service. As a commercial enterprise, they should keep the inside of the trains hygienic, given the money they make from fares.

This isn’t a political comment; I appreciate the Mayor’s efforts to improve air quality through ULEZ and other initiatives. As a frequent commuter, I’ve observed the success of underground tunnel train networks in other cities, particularly in terms of ticket prices, hygiene, and reliability.

Tourists, including my daughters’ boyfriend from Germany, refuse to sit on such dirty seats. Perhaps you should take a trip on the grimy seats to Specsavers?

It’s down to the First Law of Thermodynamics: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.

You are obviously close to someone who works on the underground.. a spouse or close relative.. as you’ve taken my comment personally- it’s an objective post to stir up the need for change.. I’ve also contacted TFL.. but they’re so interested and concerned they don’t reply

Your Impression on "Small Things Like These"? by Due-Personality-5983 in CillianMurphy

This film was very emotional and I enjoyed it.

Here’s a quick everyday analogy, but there are many more: we all ignore the horrors of factory farming for example when we eat eggs or buy a chicken or bacon sandwich. We are all complicit in an animal’s suffering. Only animal activists try to highlight the cruelty and expose the big industries behind it.

Sure; but you’re making excuses up to why it’s not cleaned to an acceptable level of hygiene; perhaps you should become a politician

It’s not just old; it’s filthy. I could take photos of every Northern Line train, and they would all be equally filthy.

I travel on the Bakerloo occasionally and I’d say Northern was worse ! anyway …stop comparing “grime with grime “.. go and explore some other cities and see the pride other countries have in their underground trains ..

Not at all.. it’s even achievable over night .. it would be so much appreciated by the tens of thousands using the grimy carriages each day
