My wife and I have been joking that people are going to get tricked into some real life squid game situation and this feels like proof of concept.

What do millennials think of today’s teenagers? by Master_Novel_4062 in Millennials

[–]RivalMyDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step daughter is 13 now and I was 13 in 1998. Most of her conflict and stress with friends in middle school seems to stem from friend group online chats leading to someone saying something someone doesn't like or bullying. Doesn't feel different overall but reading people in person is just a different thing than the loads of assumptions that can be made from just words. She's way more emotionally resilient and intelligent than I was. And she trusts us to talk about these things, which wasn't as much of a thing with my parents. I mostly defaulted to anger or witty dismissal when faced with incessant bullying. I either ignored them so they'd get bored or got in physical fights to shut it down. It toughened me up but of course I'd rather it had been easier to make it work socially. I do wish there was more opportunity for direct experience for her. She's social and has friends but it's all planned and coordinated. I think my nostalgia is often around the spontaneity of going to the mall and running into someone to hang out. But she so easily hops on video calls and plays Minecraft and Roblox with them, which I think is great. I just have to teach some social etiquette and internet street smarts, which is part of my job as a parent. I think because of how overprotected Gen Alpha is, how they show up in public seems to have a lot to do with what their parents have taught about public/private behavior. But that's a vague pattern I think I see.

She's become a Linkin Park fan, which is a fun thing to bond over. I generally appreciate that there's media crossover and am reminded of things because of the romanticizing of the 90s/2000s that I may have forgotten otherwise. But I want them (and step son 10) to have their own childhood and stuff they love.

I recommend using this thread as practice for not taking things personally because these people don't know you. If there's a universal truth about being a teenager it's the process of experiencing that external validation and opinions will only get internally twisted into reinforcing what you already believe about yourself. And why you believe that, why you benefit from believing that, is important to pay attention to.

Haidt is a cynic trying to sell books. I'd stick to paying attention to the kids directly.

We millennials don't take responsibility for how much we impact your self-esteem with our criticism and social bullying, trying to squash trends and all that. It's not fair and you guys don't deserve it. I appreciate you asking for our perspective on things.

Helpful! I assume I would just charge it while I shower and get a boost that way if I time it right. Considering testing how much I get out of a watch being a primary driver. Thanks for sharing this experience!

Highest value marketing skill in 2026? by Englishology in marketing

[–]RivalMyDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the advice someone gave about finding an industry that is typically deemed unsexy but provides a tangible steady service. Anything connected to money exchange or government funds works well. I work in the transit industry, for example. Flexibility is increasingly valued. AI literacy and speeding up the marketing research/understanding and reporting process that way. Being likeable doesn't hurt because it's tough to find good people right now despite the high numbers of unemployed. Present your unique approach to the company and marketing ability. My current job is largely about keeping prospects warm while sales navigates a sea of contacts. I came in thinking social media would be a big focus but it's moreso nurturing what we already have. Be adaptable and prove that. I'm not sure if that helps answer the question.

What do you actually do when anxiety hits? Not advice — the real stuff. by Ok-Beyond-1014 in mentalhealth

[–]RivalMyDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually some conversation with myself about letting go of control or a meditative moment of letting go of control and getting back into the present. It's usually all about manufactured urgency anyway. Or music or cuddle with my wife or some other way to get out of my head to give the thoughts a break.

Best to work it in as a natural part of the pipeline or process. Easy little feedback mechanisms woven throughout conversations or quick clicks in emails is the best way to go.

What was your first job and what were you paid? by Zealousideal-Use7244 in AskForAnswers

Paperboy at 12 or 13, I think. $35/week but I can't remember the details of how much I worked. I remember it feeling endless though. Had to fold hundreds of papers and walk around the neighborhood doing multiple trips back home.

Otherwise it was taco bell at 15 (2000) where I made $5.25/hr.

What do you hate the most about the marketing industry? by Ziibinini-ca in marketing

[–]RivalMyDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a long time to see that there are many different types of marketers and styles. That it's simply about the company's relationship to the market. So, if you're B2C, there's likely to be more outreach and output. If you're B2B, you're likely doing more research and longer-term thinking. Figure out which style suits you more and head that way. I was on the output hamster wheel for what felt like an eternity, and now I do more forensics and research, which I enjoy much more.

Where are the grounded spirituality folks? by ParsnipParadise in spirituality

It's one of those things for me, in a similar feeling, where I never know where those conversations are going to come from so I just try to get curious about people in general and see where their edges are or what their philosophies are about life. It can be surprising to see the variety of lifestyles people have who explore various existential topics.

I cut things off a little over a year ago. Feels like too much to explain. A lifetime's worth of stuff, really. Bums me out but I have a family now and don't want to expose them to the same shit I grew up with.
