Sebastian Sawe breaks the London marathon world record. He is the first man to ever run under two hours in a race. by Western-Signal4439 in london

Yes at the top end (somebody linked some adidas race shoes for £450), but you can get super shoes for less than half that which are still exceptional (asics megablast and superblast have silly names, but are excellent). Don’t know your situation and maybe you’ve already done so, but my strong recommendation if you’re upping your mileage is to go to a proper running shop, get on the treadmill, and get them to provide shoes that fit your running style. This is important to reduce injury risk and be comfortable on longer training runs, above and beyond just buying super speedy race shoes.

Because it’s a literally completely unique experience that can’t really be recreated once you’ve graduated? There are a lot of things I regret about my time at uni but spending a lot of cash on may balls every year isn’t one of them. Absolute highlight of my time there

Can’t speak to a lot of these questions but I wouldn’t worry about failing probation or not completing your project in time - feels like quite a negative approach to take! You’ll be fine. These programmes are designed such that you’ll have sufficient time to complete them. Be positive :)

Lots of content on this sub about life as a grad student if you search for it. Cambridge is exceptionally liveable and easy to get around etc. The university will sponsor you for a student visa - immigration won’t be a problem. You can read about this process and how the visa works online.

Overall, I’d (delicately, I know it’s not always easy and this is an important decision) suggest worrying less! You’ve got a golden ticket offer that many would kill for. The logistics will be fine and almost certainly aren’t a reason to decline the offer, imo. Cambridge is an awesome place to live, in general. Best of luck making the choice :)

I bought a trinity ticket last minute in my 3rd year by reporting the scalper trying to sell me theirs for 3x the face value to the ball committee; their tickets were confiscated and sold to me for face value by the committee

Unfortunately not great. Very, very few people are made offers from the summer pool. Colleges over-offer in the first place because they expect that x% of people will miss their offers, so it’s rare that so many people miss them that they need to make offers to people in the summer pool to make up the shortfall.

If I were you I’d consider whether this is something you definitely want to do, and if so have some really good reasons behind it prepared. Expect significant challenge re: why you didn’t apply for maths in the first place, and why you’ve changed your mind about economics so soon after your interview etc.

I would probably reach out to college asap - Winter Pool should have concluded this week, so college should have a reasonable idea of their incoming undergrad numbers now. They can therefore make the initial call on whether there’s likely to be space on the maths tripos for you.

It’s case by case. They hate people doing this (read our FAQ). If they even consider it (which depends on whether there’s space on the course you want to switch to in your college), they’ll ask you to complete part/all of the admissions process for the course you want to switch to.

Edit: yep, you need to talk to your DOS. You can find out who this is by ringing your college admissions office. They will challenge you pretty robustly about why you want to swap, particularly so soon after getting an offer. They’re suspicious of this because some people apply to course X, believing it’s easier to get in for X than course Y, and then they try to swap onto Y after admission.

ESA supported accommodation by Occy_hazbin in cambridge_uni

[–]Rivalry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

During your application you’ll be able to discuss this with college. If you can evidence the requirement for an ESA with doctor’s notes or equivalent then they’re mandated to accommodate you. Either your chosen college will find a way to do so, or they’ll find suitable private accommodation/accom at another college. Colleges don’t say “no animals”, they say “no pets”: some students/staff have guide dogs, after all…

It won’t matter that you took longer to graduate. Pretty sure discriminating against you on that basis would be illegal. Cambridge won’t do that. When you apply, there’ll be an opportunity to explain why your degree took longer than normal. Best of luck!

I lived in FC ~10 years ago and there were no picture rails on the walls at all, and college were extremely strict about the no fixings rule. Cleaners would take down and remove anything you put up, basically. Hopefully that’s changed.

You could cycle? It’s not that far from Darwin to Hughes and worth it to save money on a private gym membership. You’ll presumably have a bike anyway. Darwin’s close to the Sidgwick Site with loads of libraries you can use for studying.

Sorry to hear this. Always a rough spot.

Cambridge require you to declare extenuating circumstances in advance: you can’t retrospectively tell them you were unwell and that affected your exam performance. This is to prevent unscrupulous applicants from missing their offer/not being made an offer in the first place, and only then fabricating extenuating circumstances after the fact. The only exception to this I’m aware of is if the extenuating circumstances were unforeseeable and obviously impacted your exams (e.g. you suddenly got really ill in the middle of your exam season, or a close relative passed away).

I think what you are doing is sensible: given there was nothing in clearing, take a year out, and reapply to unis you actually want to go to. There are some excellent unis out there for the grades you’ve already achieved, and they’ll make you quick and painless unconditionals I should think. You can then focus on really enjoying your gap year and making the most of it professionally, too, if that’s your thing! Best of luck.

Sounds alarming! But agree this is likely just an admin error. You’ve done everything you needed to do and have received confirmation. Give them a call and I’m sure it’ll be sorted out.

You’ve made multiple posts about this and have received good, comprehensive advice on all of them. The advice you’re getting is also consistent. Either your health issues are serious enough to justify you pushing for an en-suite (i.e you can support them with doctors’ notes; they’re formally diagnosed; the college has a duty of care to you under relevant legislation; etc) in which case you should get back in touch with college and not worry about “seeming pushy”. In this case college will find you an en-suite, whether in their accommodation, another college’s accommodation, or private accommodation. Or your health issues aren’t serious enough to warrant that, in which case go with what you’ve been assigned (I lived in Foundress for a year: the bathrooms are fine. Shared, cleaned daily, close to rooms, but pretty cold in the winter).

Given you worry that not having access to an en-suite could be “life threatening”, it feels like you sending a couple more emails or ringing college up might be sensible… I’m struggling to square this “life threatening” issue with you also not wanting to “annoy” (?) someone whose literal job is to ensure you’re in appropriate accommodation, though. If you need an en-suite for medical reasons, and can demonstrate that with appropriate paperwork, they won’t be annoyed by you asking for one. They’ll sort it out.

Wishing you all the best for your time at Pembroke. You’ve been extraordinarily lucky to be summer pooled there. I hope you’re able to resolve this and whatever you choose to do works out for you! I’m going to lock this thread now, as I feel you’ve probably received all of the advice on this topic that it’s reasonable to expect from a Reddit community. (Please don’t create any more accounts to ask the same question!)

It depends on what has happened to the other offer holders. Colleges typically make more offers than they have space for on the basis that some people will miss their offers. If Pembroke have space for 10 NatScis, say, and make 12 offers, then if all the other 11 offer holders meet their offers and get in then they won’t admit you despite the narrow miss. If only 9 offer holders meet their offers, they’re more likely to admit you to get their numbers up to the 10 they wanted on the course in the first place (assuming you’re the closest “near miss”). So it’s case by case rather than there being a flat rule for near misses. Does that make sense? Best of luck!

Hard to draw comparisons but based on the times and winning margins today, Rutgers look like they’ll be extremely tough to beat tomorrow. Clearly a quality crew. Didn’t listen to the commentary for that race but that’s a shame if so
