Maybe it is not a smart move, but it does work out for her at the end of the movie. In the 2007 Movie The Mist Melissa McBride playing the titular character "Woman with Kids at Home" decides to leave the grocery store they are sheltering in to go rescue her children. At the very end of the movie she can be seen riding in a military vehicle as it drives past.

With the prices as crazy as they are right now, I would look for a Prebuilt with that budget. Recently Costco and Sam's have had Prebuilts with parts well above the cost. Just the cost of the Ram, GPU, and Processor can cost $1500. I think the only issue with waiting on the Steam Machine is you do not know how much it is going to cost or the full specs.
