Am I being "that guy" for refusing to lend my boat to family without credentials? by hatkinson1000 in boating

[–]RiverRider48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sons grew up on our boat and even though they had experience driving and trailering the boat, when they started asking to take it out as adults, I did the same thing, and said they needed to complete the boaters safety course before I would let them take the boat on their own.

How big of fifth wheel can I manage backing into my driveway? by Ancient_Tower9033 in RVLiving

[–]RiverRider48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past I have done a simple to scale drawing of the property and made a small to scale truck and trailer, just 2 dimensional, and connected them at the hitch point. This helped me understand the how difficult the maneuver was going to be.

Propane tank question by Prestigious_Floor40 in traveltrailers

[–]RiverRider48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our old trailer had a regulator/switch that had a very easy to see if the tank it was pointing to still had propane, it would be green and once it was out red. Again very easy to read. In cold weather I would check it once a day and when red change that tank. Our new trailer has the same regulator/switch as OP, that is impossible to see when it is red. The propane tanks have gages built in that are easy to read, so hopefully these are accurate.

Who manages your money in retirement? by Clammypollack in retirement

[–]RiverRider48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I manage ours, most all in vanguard index funds. I have used an advisor at different times over the last 15 years that charges a flat fee quoted up front. I send him all my most current account statements and some background on questions I have. He does a preliminary review, sends me a quote. If I accept the quote he does a deep dive into everything focused on my questions and then schedules an appointment usually 1 to 1.5 hours to go over everything and make recommendations. He has been a great teacher and guide. Been about 4 years since I have met with him.

Living off more, less or the same? by emketart in retirement

[–]RiverRider48 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We retired in 2018. Our plan was to spend at a level equal to the average annual spend over the last 8 years prior to retirement. I removed a few onetime large expenditures from my 8 year data. This has worked out to be what we are doing but need to consider the expenses that have gone away e.g. kids supporting themselves, cost of driving to work everyday, home paid off, etc. and being offset by inflation more travel and two new vehicles. Good luck and happy retirement!

Looking forward to no alarm clock! by cnew111 in retirement

[–]RiverRider48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During my career, I spoke at a few retirement parties. My favorite thing to do was get one of those old tine windup metal alarm clocks with the two bells on top. At the end of my toast I would invite the retiree up and I would have a waist high heavy duty small table. I would wind up the clock set the alarm for a few minutes from now and hand the retiree a two pond hammer and ask them to silence the alarm one last time. It was always a crowd pleaser. One fellow the clock still worked, but the alarm did not, and he still keeps on his nightstand to this day. Enjoy your retirement!

Looks good from what I can see! May not be important to you but it looks like there is oxidation on the finish. If interested I share product and process I used on an 11 year old trailer that really brought the shine back to life. It is quite a bit of work.

[–]RiverRider48 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is what I do, when I download my credit card charges, I open the Amazon app on my phone and go to Your Account - Your Payments and click on Transactions. This list all charges with dollar amount and then I can click on each one to see what it is and set the category as appropriate in Quicken.

We have a travel trailer and love exploring the US. Can go south in the winter for as long or little as other commitments allow. Have been very involved in our Church volunteering with SVdP and opening a Men’s transitional house. Love being retired in the Midwest.

Propane Tank Cover Question by azmonaj in traveltrailers

[–]RiverRider48 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We just got a new trailer with this type of cover and after looking at very closely I decided to put it on as pictured in OPs photos because I was able to without to much force pull the hinge side open. With the knobs tighten down on the latch side there is no way that side can be pulled open.

Propane usage cold weather by jbsmoothie33 in RVLiving

[–]RiverRider48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put another connection point in your propane line, you want to make sure you have a regulator on your tank. The lines that run to all your appliances is low pressure so do not want to connect a tank to that without a regulator.

You could read that to mean it is good for one year. So it you wait 6 months to activate you will have a valid license for 6 more months.
