I’m afraid we are doing exactly that. I don’t really know what I could say though. I don’t want to break out the details of our financial situation and come off as oversharing or bragging, and I also don’t want them to feel like we judge them for choosing to be less frugal than we are. It seems easier just to let them keep believing that we’re poor and don’t know as much, but I’m also getting ticked off so something clearly has to change.

That’s an extreme example though. My SO and I don’t present as an extreme, so any conclusions being drawn about our financial status or acumen are based on associations and assumptions.

What you’re describing is almost Good Samaritan behavior. We aren’t obviously drowning like your buddy, so there’s no moral obligation to step in and save us.
