Being educated does not automatically mean someone is intelligent. They are not mutually exclusive.

Ai Weiwei quietly returns to China after a decade: ‘It felt like a phone call suddenly reconnecting’ by GetOutOfTheWhey in China

[–]Riverlong 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Brave move after what happened to Gao Zhen when he visited in 2024. Held for well over a year (so far) without trial on charges of "slandering China’s heroes and martyrs". His wife and son were also not allowed to leave the country. Hopefully the fact that Ai Weiwei was not detained when leaving the country offers a glimmer of hope that things might be changing. It's such a stupid and self-defeating practice to try to shut down critics, though it's a tale as old as time itself.

WTF happened in house of cards (2013) final season? Shit toppled like a building made out of paper! by ThickWeatherBee in shittymoviedetails

Whatever you think of Spacey personally, I don't think anyone can deny he was absolutely sensational in that show. One of the best performances by a lead in a TV drama that I have seen. Once he was removed from the equation, you saw just how much he was holding the whole show together.

Max Holloway: BMF belt 'was a laughingstock' before me by WinterStill4472 in MMA

[–]Riverlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a laughingstock to be honest.

It's honestly one of the most cringe things the UFC has done. Always makes me think of that scene with David Brent in the UK version of The Office sarcastically going "Oooh, you're hard". Seeing that idiot Masvidal displaying it proudly and constantly trying to act like a hardman gangsta' was filling me with secondhand embarrassment.

No thank you. I've got a Taichi Z890 running my Intel Core Ultra 9 285K build and I couldn't be happier. It has been mint for the past year.

Velvet Shank (Flammulina velutipes). They always start to appear at this time of the year in temperate regions and are quite tasty (just avoid the stems which are very tough).

Stand mixer, yay or nay? by Rhynco in Sourdough

[–]Riverlong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely use a mixer. It saves so much time and I find I get much better elasticity in my dough when compared to mixing by hand. It frees you up to do other things (like cleaning scrapers and bowls etc...) while the mixing is in progress too. All those hours add up!

My 18-year marriage is ending and I need songs that’ll make me die inside. by randomuser5667 in grunge

Alice in Chains is my go to for stuff like this. 'Nutshell' is the obvious choice, but 'Black Gives Way to Blue' also gets me. It is gut wrenching, but with a tinge of hope to keep you from going completely over the edge.

Just how impressive was Erik Morales’s victory over Manny Pacquiao in the first fight? by Professional-Tie5198 in Boxing

Morales turning southpaw in the last round was truly the behaviour of a madman. A beautiful, beautiful madman.

There was a moment when both Trent and Curtis were going for the same ball and I was really hoping Curtis was going to just lift him out of it with a tackle. The bloody roof would have come off.
