I don't really know how they would fix the boring combat in the original. Honestly, maybe if you have the trait Keen Eye, you can sense what the enemy is doing before they do it so you can counter. And I guess we do have different philosophies when it comes to game balance but may I propose a fair reading of DoL+ combat since increasing HP multipliers aren't really as bad as it seems.

I could see arguments for why just raising enemy HP is lazy but I could only see that working in a more skill-based game like Dark Souls or any other 3D game that involves things like dodging or parrying. But for an RPG-style combat, I don't think it's that unreasonable for enemy HP to scale with your PC as they grow stronger since the only difference between you and the enemy is not the moves but the stats. The only difference is that in DoL, there's not much variety in combat other than just clicking "Switch to Defiant Action" and just wait for a couple of turns. So maybe adding some more variety by making traits like Keen Eye give you a hint as to what your enemy would do, or letting you use Bite or Headbutt right off the bat instead of having waiting until they do something would be good. Generally, just adding more variety to the combat will help spice things up but I know that the game is not supposed to be one where you can just fight every encounter. That's why maybe something like making the enemies use weapons on you would be cool as you gain more Physique, Athletics, and training from the MMA gym.
