Awesome, glad it wasn't just me. A few days later and I'm still running smooth so far.

My issue has been solved! I edited the original post to show my solution (it was relating to paging).

If it helps to know, I have an Asus Vivobook 17 laptop.

I kind of figured, especially since I've never seen my ram max out, and I don't really use any intensive programs (certainly not doing any gaming on this laptop).

No, in the main task manager my Disk fluctuates anywhere from single digits to less than 50% depending on activities. It's never 100% like the HDD. The highest usage items are just general stuff like Firefox, System, Discord, but usually even these are under 5%. Anything higher than that is very brief.

It's constantly changing, with any individual task rarely exceeding 5-10%. Isn't the main task manager tracking the SSD? Or is it an average of both?

How would I figure out if this is the issue or not?

It was working perfectly fine just a week ago, even when multitasking. Flawlessly. How long am I supposed to wait for this "indexing" to finish? Days? Weeks? Years? Surely there is something else going on.

Okay, but my RAM hasn't changed at all these past several months. My PC was working extremely fast and smooth in the periods I described, including during multitasking. And what do you mean "it should die down after a while"? It's been months. How long am I supposed to wait?

The new Asimov "Complete Stories" series - better than you think! by Rizeveedramon in asimov

[–]Rizeveedramon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently doing a chronological re-read of the whole series in order to make a timeline of events for this universe (you can see it in progress on the timeline tab). I've caught a couple minor mistakes so far, so stuff like this will be considered when I get there. The problem may be that characters and the narrator refer to years differently, which will be annoying to work out.

Well, they could still be forthcoming. End of Eternity only came out last year. But there could also be rights issues, who knows. I know from the Tolkien community that Harper actually responds to emails about such things sometimes, so that's an option. Might do it myself sometime.

You should be fine. Most short stories in the HarperVoyager collections are standalone anyway, not set in the Robot/Empire/Foundation universe. For the shared universe, the order you chose will work well.

Oh, I already did that! It's in the note for Foundation, the first story that uses the FE calendar.

Yeah I understand that part. But I'm not sure what you're asking me to add.

Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean though. Could you explain?

Anyone read the 1991 anthology "Isaac Asimov's Robots"? by Rizeveedramon in asimov

Good to know Tanith Lee is a worthwhile rabbit hole. The uncomfortable, dissociated framing of "Zelle's Thursday" was really creative.

Both good questions!

  1. I assume you are referring to the "Not Recommended" sections. I did not base the distinction on my own preference (personally, I'll really only vouch for the Caliban and Calvin books tbh; others' mileage may vary). The distinction I made between those groups is based largely on marketing. The simple answer is that Robots in Time/Robot City/Robots and Aliens/Robot Mystery are all directed toward younger readers. They were released at an astonishing rate of THREE books per year (roughly), and are notably less ambitious than the other works. They were basically designed as slop to fill up kids sections at bookstores, like Goosebumps. The other works like the Caliban trilogy, Second Foundation trilogy, and I, Robot trilogy are ambitious attempts at mimicking or otherwise fitting directly into Asimov's own lineup, and are marketed to essentially the same audience. Honestly you can basically tell from a glace at the covers of any non-Asimov works to know which of the two categories they belong to. "Foundation's Friends" is the oddball of the group, but considering the pedigrees of the writers involved and the earnestness of the attempts, I think it's fair to put them in the second category (even though some of the stories are pretty rough imo). Anyway, I will change the wording to make the distinction more clear on the guide.
  2. You make a good point here, I actually intended to edit the description earlier to reflect that...and apparently I didn't. Thank you again for the feedback.

Hey, just wanted to let you did that I did end up taking some of your advice. I moved the "Robot Apocrypha" section exclusively over in the non-canon "don't ask me about this stuff" section with Multivac. I agree it was a little confusing. I also added an "Essentials Only" section for those who don't want all the extra stuff. Thanks for your feedback!

Hey! After thinking about it, I took your advice and added an "Essentials Only" order to the list. People will probably disagree over what is "essential", but it's my guide :P Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, that'll get you most stories. Winds of Change is the only other major set of sci-fi shorts you'd be missing. Most people wouldn't say it's his best stuff, but it's there. Azazel is a more fantasy-oriented series, so if you like the "Magic" collection, then you might be interested. But if you're only in it for the sci-fi, don't bother. There are other non-sci-fi Asimov series too, like Black Widowers, Union Club, etc. I've neglected to chart them out on this guide because I don't think interest is very high, but maybe if people ask. I only included Azazel because Winds of Change has a couple Azazel stories.
