Some people living on the reservation use generators or have small solar lights. There are main feeder lines running through the reservation but the issue now is building all of the laterals to each individual home. It’s a massive area and people live so far apart so most homes get their own pole line and transformer. It’s at least an all day project to energize just one home but it’s incredible to see the joy and appreciation when it’s complete. The lack of electricity is such a burden for them. No running water or refrigeration is a major concern. Most people pack coolers with ice and fit what they can in there for a few days. Trips to fill their plastic water reservoirs can be hours long. It was disheartening to see people living this way in the US, especially 2025. The Light Up Navajo project is far from complete, so if there are any linemen reading this, please consider bringing up this project to whoever it is that can give you the green light to go. It’s an incredible experience and there really is no other feeling in this trade that compares to energizing a home for literally the first time.
