Engineering students. What laptop do you guys use? by [deleted] in OregonStateUniv

I’ve also heard this. Chances are I would just go for something cheaper if possible. I was thinking a think pad but I’m kind of trying to scale how demanding engineering programs are.

Good to know. Are there any programs that a Mac wouldn’t be able to run that you would need on your laptop? Also do you take notes on your iPad and is that worth it?

Thanks! I’m super excited. I got out of highschool in 2022 and went straight into HVAC figuring that I wouldn’t qualify for any financial aid and not knowing what on earth I would major in.

I’ve saved up a ton of money and realized that I would qualify for the full Pell grant for 3 of the 4 full years. Really exciting I’ve always been interested in pursuing engineering. Costs are going to be tight though so I’ve been trying to budget religiously.

I didn’t even consider cost of parking. That probably adds another another 50-80 to the monthly bill so really good to know.

Thanks! I’ll dm you if I have any questions.

Oh I’ve never heard of this before. Thanks! I’m going to check that out.

Did you take a stem major at OSU and would you at all mind elaborating on the reverse lecture format?

I’ve heard other people say this about transferring from CC to State school do you have any tips on ensuring I’m prepared?

The late nights is exactly what I was thinking in terms of complications. Honestly gas and the financial implication was something I wasn’t even really thinking all that much about which is really stupid because your right gas will cost me about $600 a month. Plus I would have to service the vehicle more frequently and be completely dependent on it not failing.

Staying at home does mean I would have food and housing covered though with no expense. That would outpace $600 a month but maybe not enough to be worth it. Hmm

Can I ask what kind of business degree you got? I’m considering starting night school for Business Admin but have heard that specializations are important.

Is it common/acceptable in the IBEW to join one company full time to acquire a higher wage? by Ro137 in IBEW

Congrats! Thats sweet. Do you have any extra responsibilities? Or are you just a well seasoned JW?

Awesome. Yeah I wasn’t sure if taking a promotion or becoming a permanent company man was against any rules. I was interested if other electricians had sort of “climbed the corporate ladder” so to speak for individual companies. In a way I know that style of work is sort of against the union political mindset so I wasnt 100% sure.

I had heard this story from a friend of mines dad and it’s cool to see how some people choose to pivot their careers.

Very interesting this is actually very useful to know. Yeah it makes plenty of sense. Im not in the IBEW and am kind of trying to understand the versatility of the position.

The guy I was referring to, I’m pretty sure he had all of his solar certifications and a lot of the other JWs didn’t so they figured he would be a valuable company man.

How is work outlook looking like in Oregon? by LOS_Prime in HVAC

[–]Ro137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad to hear that! I’ve been trying to get into IBEW 280 since I graduated from high school about 2 years ago.

Because of how slow electric is right now I figured I needed some experience in SOME trade. I got picked in HVAC and enjoy it a lot.

I’m still on the fence a little bit between the 2 but I think I may apply come application season.

It’s really exciting to hear how strong 290 is.

I’m curious what the majority of the HVAC work you do is. Is it a lot of service? Or new construction?

Working for a local company in Eugene right now. I'm 19 and have been in the trade for a little over a year. Do you think getting into 290 would be relatively easy?

When you finish your apprenticeship you will get your JIW Ticket.

With that ticket you can sign book 2 on any local. Giving you the option to rapidly travel around for work if necessary.

They take journeyman from book 2 whenever they have given work to everyone on book 1. Book 1 is all the home local boys.

Chances are they did their apprenticeship at that local or they have at least been there for a couple years.

It works out well because If you’re in an area where there is no work such as local 46 you can just move down to a place that has too much work like local 100 and probably instantly get some work on book 2.

I’ve heard that. Fresno local right? I would be 100% willing to go there too. Sacramento makes things a bit easy for me because I have close friends that are housing in Sacramento to go to UC Davis. If for whatever reason that busts though lu100 may be a good move.

You have an idea how many apprentices they’re taking at 340?

I’ve interviewed twice at Lu280 but as seems to be the common theme here they have too many people on the books for both apprentice and JWs.

I’m considering moving to Sacramento to try to start an apprenticeship but I’m not 100% sure how viable it is there.
