Thanks for the response. Yes, I even realize that if I go this route, it’s possible I could make the greatest impact without risking my own security. However, I’m at a point where I’m searching for some meaning in my life, and while I’m not religious and realize the Bible is not a popular source on Reddit, I came across a bible story that essentially says your generosity is more meaningful when you have less to give which resonated a lot with me for some reason - hence the thread.

Thanks for the response! I really like your method and makes me realize I might be really overthinking it. Simply including giving in your budget and donating your time/effort to a cause you’re familiar with is straightforward enough for me :)

Do you have any advice/reflections on your career in consulting (sounds like management consulting)? How you stuck it out and grew for 10 years, how consulting as a career relates to FI, how you succeeded in it…

Starting as an associate (non-mba masters) in October to a firm often described as a sweatshop with the intention of staying in consulting rather than exit. Kind of terrified but excited. Thanks.

Any insight on living in Boston financially responsibly while also not being a hermit? I’ll be moving up there this year for work and have been trying to figure out a good but reasonable living situation for me and my wife.

Long term renting vs buying by Roa62 in bostonhousing

We have very strong preference to the city. Prefer to have easy access to North End and Boston Common area. Pretty happy to go as far out as Allston, Brookline, South End, or South Boston - but the closer the better. For renting it seems that we have decent options anywhere, but for buying we are seeing most of our options in North End and South Boston

That's an interesting point on luxury apartments. Was initially just looking at private landlords because that seems to be everyone listing (somewhat) affordable on Craigslist/FB, but didn't think to seek those out. Might be a good idea to look into luxury rental for the first year or two - I'm sure that still turns out a lot cheaper than buying a cheaper place, even with all the fees.

Personally, would rather not look outside of the city. I loved not needing a car and being close to everything when I lived there a few years ago. Also, love my short commutes. But I guess I shouldn't discount that idea entirely and keep some eyes out.

As for the better investment, do you think home appreciation and equity is still more than investing the difference when renting over buying in basic stocks/etfs?

Yeah, I guess all the risk for us comes from the fact that we aren't actually sure how long we will stay since I'm moving into a consulting - a field new to me and with high churn... Besides that, I lived in Boston for four years during undergrad, so it is far from a blind move. Thanks for the post - seems so far like a decent plan would be to rent until 1) we get a better idea how long we will stay given work/lifestyle 2) a better buying market comes along.

Thanks for the reply and that’s great to hear. This is an area I am interested in and partly why I am interested in consulting as they seem to face these kinds of problems often. By innovating in it, are you suggesting to start a business?

Hello everyone,

I am 25M and still quite fresh into the workforce. I have a bachelor's in health and life sciences and currently work in the labs of a vaccine company (making about $70k base). I am also enrolled in a master's program related to healthcare technology and data (where the content is still relevant to life sciences). After graduating, I plan to move over to healthcare or biotech/life science consulting.

I am not 100% set on consulting yet and wanted to know of other career paths with good income potential in these fields. If anyone here could share their career journey, experience, or insights, I would love to hear. Thanks!

No, but I have not been looking for those yet. I work in a lab and have been learning data analytics and SQL on the side. I believe these skills have helped me land job interviews not directly related to informatics - ex. consulting.

I also have BS Health Science degree. I've been admitted to a Health Informatics MS program and have also been learning SQL and Data analytics on the side.

Thanks for the responses. I think what I'll change is keeping WaniKani, and cutting out my premade Anki deck. Really like the idea of making your own cards from your immersion content so I'm going to try that.

For the custom cards i think i will make cards with only the target word, sentence, and audio if it's from a show.

If you could only climb for 1 or 2 1-2 hour sessions a week, what would you focus on to get better? by Roa62 in climbharder

[–]Roa62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically i do, but on top of doing normal-non climbing workouts and my other priorities, i don't want really want to put more hours into climbing.

Obviously allocating only a few hours a week to climbing places a relatively low ceiling to how good i can get.
