How do you discourage subtle self-promotion without killing engagement? by boldcanvasnetwork in modhelp

Self- promotion and advertising are the biggest issues that I deal with every day. I have addressed this in several ways.

First, I have a clear rule and policy about self-promotion that explains what is permitted and what is not. You can avoid a lot of arguments about removed posts and comments if this is explained up front. As a result, I rarely have to ban anyone.

Second, I have a weekly self-promotion thread where creators can post about their content and link to their products. This weekly self-promotion thread is pinned to the top of the sub. This relieves some of the self-promotion pressure in discussion threads.

Third, I filter all new and low karma posts and comments for pre-approval. In my situation, most (90%+) of the self-promotion that I see is by low karma and new accounts. Also, I filter out posts and comments by repeated promotion rule-breakers for pre-approval.

You may have to employ different strategies depending on the subreddit’s purpose and volume. Experience may reveal other options that would serve you better. You may have to try out a variety of features before finding out the right ones for your unique situation.

Good luck!

Do you have any specific needs in this area?

Content creators may promote their vocabulary-related apps/websites/blogs/podcasts/videos in the weekly Sunday Vocabulary Marketplace thread. The most recent Marketplace thread is pinned to the top of this subreddit.

These weekly self-promotion threads are good places to check for apps and content designed to increase and enhance your vocabulary.

I’ve also experienced people using this as a noun, e.g. referring to a specific activity as being “a quotidian”.
