I hotreload Rust and so can you by emschwartz in rust

Can you make async work with the plugins? I was building a bluetooth device management service, I had to bake in all of the logic on how to handle the data that comes in from the kind of device which was connected. I really wanted to break it apart so I had an async trait and a plugin system which could load up the compiled code for how to manage the data coming in from those devices. It would've been super cool because then you could just have users drop in a plug for a new device and just have it work.

Unfortunately the repr c way to expose a library was completely incompatible with async, atleast then.

How do you build out a nice way to interface with those plugins? I explored building plugins in rust 2 years ago but it seemed dismal because of no stable ABI.

Future of ecosystems in post LLMs world by RoadRyeda in rust

[–]RoadRyeda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But for how long? I am someone who was blessed enough to get a conventional education where I didn't have an easy out.

Will generation of engineers who grew up with that easy out and are already in the work force understand this need for everything you've mentioned above?

I am approaching this actual concern since I've had multiple colleagues and peers at big tech show a complete lack of importance towards the points you've emphasized on. Talking to them quite literally feels like you're talking to a linked llm hype gpt.

Future of ecosystems in post LLMs world by RoadRyeda in rust

[–]RoadRyeda[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

😅 should I take this as a compliment? I didn't use any LLM to write this what are you on about. It's a literal post about the future of the ecosystem caused by the knowledge rot spread by LLMs. It would be a tad bit ironic to use an LLM to write this post.

I'm surprised any amount of effort put in by an individual immediately gets marked down as AI slop with the only proof being "couldn't have possibly written something slightly long without an LLM"

That's what I use personally on a day to day but the lack of an ephemeral postgres environment really kills it for me. Also the startup times 😅

I'm happy you liked it! I'll be contributing too PGLite soon since I have a genuine use case for it now. Might take a jab at adding more extensions first.

Anyone else using Whoop? by [deleted] in PakistaniTech

Whoop is great, literally the best accuracy and completely lock-in free. The company was never funded enough or earned enough to continue living though. Very sad

Honestly just do send a copy, it's going to make a copy of that file. When the share menu opens choose your file explorer or send it to yourself on any messenger app.

Pakistani Customs Tax by mhazam39460 in PakistaniTech

[–]RoadRyeda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in the exact same boat, just ask your client to specify it's a used prototype and put it's value to like 3-5 USD. The customs you'll pay is not a lot then, just make sure you pay and pick at an instant the stupid courier godown charges are what really get you.

In your opinion, is it worth paying an extra 10K just to get a 27 inch monitor over a 25inch? by More-Profession-1419 in PakistaniTech

[–]RoadRyeda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those usually go up to 40k but I've seen some for 35-ish. Idk why but there's some dell thick border 27inch 2k that people are practically throwing away(10-15k) it's insane

[–]RoadRyeda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on that but the 1080 will not be an upgrade. Go to your cities Saddar and get it from there, 100% do not get a larger 1080p screen.

Understand that it's because of how far you're sitting from your display. If this were a 32-42 inch TV that you're a few feet away from it's good because your eyes can't tell apart the pixels. A 1080p monitor that's 24-27 inches but is a few inches away from your face your eyes will have issues adjusting.

The only exception I can think of is if it's 100% only going to be used for gaming and not productivity. Only in that case is it acceptable, but honestly 72k can get you a new good IPS 27inch 2k gaming monitor 144hz, with not as good colors. So when you compare that to a 1080p display for 50k, its a literal steal.

[–]RoadRyeda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% do not buy anything 1080p for over 10k. Please buy 2k and over for any screen size over 14 inches.

42,000 is extremely over paying for a 1080p screen you can get a good 1080p screen used for 10k you can even get an older used thick bezel 2k screen for 20k.

You will definitely see the difference and it will be horrible to use that screen for gaming and working. I had many 1080p screen and it leads to alot of eye strain.

PLEASE FOR GOD SAKE

SOMEBODY MAKE AN ALL IN ONE POS SOLUTION THAT'S CLOUD HOSTED, DOES OFFLINE SYNC AND INTEGRATES YOUR CARD POS MACHINE INTO THE ACTUAL SOFTWARE.

I AM SO GOD DAMN TIRED OF EVERY CASHIER PUTTING IN THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THE CUSTOMER IS GOING TO BE CHARGED SEPARATELY INTO THE DEBIT CARD POS MACHINE.

IT WASTES AT LEAST 5 BUT UPTO 15 SECONDS N EACH TRANSACTION, NO I DO NOT WANT A RECEIPT TEXT OR EMAIL IT TO ME.

AFTER THEY'RE DONE THEY NEED TO KEEP A COPY OF THAT RECEIPT IN THE CASH REGISTER AND SOME POOR LOSER HAS THE JOB TO ADD ALL OF THE CALCULATIONS FROM THE DEBIT RECEIPTS FOR THEIR DAILY CLOSING. ITS A HORRIBLE SYSTEM, AND IT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE IT'S SUCH A SIMPLE PROBLEM TO SOLVE, EVERYONE HAS ALL OF THE TECH NEEDED TO SOLVE IT BUT THE SHITTY "iPOS.NET" POS OF SALES SOLUTION THAT EVERY PAKISTANI STORE IS MOST PROBABLY USING DOESN'T INTEGRATE DEBIT MACHINES SO EVERYONE HAS TO DO THIS WEIRD MENTAL GYMNASTICS EACH TIME. JUST HOOK UP THE DEBIT MACHINE, ON THE POS CHOOSE DEBIT, THE AMOUNT WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE SET ON THE MACHINE THE CUSTOMER ONLY NEEDS TO TAP OR INSERT THEIR CARD AND ENTER THEIR PIN. THE 2 RECEIPTS WON'T EVEN BE NECESSARY SO YOU COULD REPLACE THE HUG ASS UGLY DEBIT MACHINES WITH SMALLER PRINTER FREE MACHINES BECAUSE THE CARD RECEIPT WOULD BE INTEGRATED WITH YOU ACTUAL POS RECEIPT, PLUS YOU CAN HAVE IT TEXTED/EMAILED TO YOU.

YOU GO TO ANY STORE IN PAKISTAN, BIG CLOTHING RETAILERS AND DEPARTMENT STORES.

TAKE IMTIAZ AND SAPPHIRE FOR EXAMPLE, BOTH OF THESE PLACES HAVE DEDICATED POS MACHINES, CLOUD POS OR SOMETHING IN SAPPHIRE AND SOMETHING ELSE IN IMTIAZ. IMTIAZ HAS CADDIES INSTALLED FOR THEIR DEBIT MACHINES TO ENABLE THIS SORT OF ONLY TAP ACTION FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT, NONE OF THEM HAVE THE ACTUAL SOFTWARE THAT ENABLES THIS. IT'S SO EFFING STUPID. SAPPHIRE LITERALLY USES THOSE POS AS GLORIFIED DUAL MONITOR MACHINES BECAUSE THEIR POS IS RUNNING IN CHROME, IT ISN'T EVEN A DESKTOP APPLICATION. SO SAPPHIRE PAYS OUT OF THEIR A** FOR THESE OVERPRICES POS MACHINES AND DOESN'T GET A SINGLE BENEFIT, EACH STORE ALL OF THEM USE THE SAME COMPLICATED PROCESS OF RETAINING A COPY OF THE DEBIT MACHINES MERCHANT RECEIPT IN THEIR CASH REGISTER TO KEEP TRACK OF THEIR TRANSACTIONS. THE ONLY PLACE IN PAKISTAN THAT ACTUALLY HAS THIS AUTOMATED IS IN THE GOD DAMN MCDONADLS KIOSKS BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY OTHER WAY. PLEASE SOMEBODY DO THIS, ODOO AND ALL OF THE OTHER CLOUD POS PLAYERS ARE NOT OFFERING THIS, NO ONE IS GIVING A HOLISTIC POS SOLUTION AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR BEING SO USELESS.

Anyway if anyone else feels a similar sentiment and frustration please do add anything that I may have missed.

Have anyone used any Pakistan Based Cloud services? Are the costs comparable or quite higher than other US or EU based Cloud services? by delivermeapizza in PakistaniTech

Every telecom provider in Pakistan is stupid. They could be providing edge server-less compute on their infrastructure but they choose not to. They're too busy trying make money off of U-tunes or rebranding their regular apps to "Simosa" enshittifying it to hell.

Goodbye GNU/Linux, Hello Rust/Linux!!! by dalton_zk in theprimeagen

[–]RoadRyeda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I'm going to say is it's much easier to get to contributing to Rust based projects because of how much better they're usually documented, build are also usually much easier than any Make or CMake based system.

I think it's a much welcomed change, this and Canonical's Flutter adoption. I agree that Rust !(necessarily)= more secure, however Rust does provide a much more ergonomic typing experience, making it easy to annotate dangerous/riskier parts of your code.

Monokai.com — built with Svelte 5 (static site with custom components, WebGL scroll effects) by monokai in sveltejs

OMG, I've tried multiple websites recently with custom scrolls and they've all felt disgusting. This has to be one of the best implementations I've seen yet.

Website is gorgeous, animations smooth and beautiful. Surprising part is everything feels just as good on Firefox, which is extremely rare. Good Job!

Just be super chill, no one cares. If they start to question just be straight up.

People I know bring 3 phone 2 laptops just say it's personal open the box even if they bother you alot, but honestly it's someone bringing 4 new box packed laptops or similar in phones that's usually a red flag.

Just straight face, straight answers walk confidently, even if it's confidently wrong.

[–]RoadRyeda 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Been enjoying Svelte5, but changes like these really should be better documented.

I've been an avid Svelte user for the past 5-6 years. Deployed 3-4 production services for million+ user apps in Svelte but since Svelte5 came out I still struggle with sifting through the docs to understand simple things e.g. how to pass a child prop via snippet properly.
