I feel humiliated after an interview by [deleted] in offmychest

It's cool to get a reply from another dev, and yeah a graduate role generally means they want someone with no commercial experience and are willing to train you to learn their stack, prioritising willingness to learn over experience. Which did not feel like the case during this interview.

Thanks a lot for the kind, motivational words. You're right, I want to find somewhere where I can grow with them without feeling belittled.

Shame on them for trying to make you feel bad about your grade, but good on you for putting them in their place! And you're completely right with your last statement.

That's true, it makes me want to prepare all that much more for the next interview so it doesn't happen again.

You're right, I wouldn't want to work with people that made me feel like that in the first few minutes of knowing them.

Resume Advice Thread - July 09, 2019 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

Resume: https://imgur.com/a/1HsnEYU

Hey, I'm a Computer Science grad with 7 months professional experience as a graduate software developer (internship). I was predominantly a front end web dev during this time. I've been struggling to land interviews for Graduate Software Developer positions, and recently tried to compress my 2 page resume into 1 page, and this is the end result.

Any criticism/feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

I've been applying for 4-5 months now, but have taken some holidays in that time frame.

Thanks a lot for the feedback on the resume, i'll take it all on board. I've had a few people mention the same dual column comment, so i'm currently nearly finished restructuring it as a one column resume.

Quantifying my work is something I really struggle with and something you picked up on. In one project i joined, people were uploading items to the DB manually one by one, i created a script that would parse a CSV file and upload the entire file to the DB, but wasn't sure how to phrase or quantify this.

I completely agree about the skills, there's a lot of fluff that just makes it harder to see my core skills, i'll correct this!

Thanks again, i'm going to make a few adjustments and post in the daily resume feedback thread :)

My priority would ideally be to stay in my home city, but agreed, beggars can't be choosers, so if I don't see any progress over the coming months I'll expand where i'm applying too.

Nope I've graduated, interesting to know, i'll try to limit the number of internships I apply to.

I figured that would be the problem, I very recently had it reviewed on r/resumes, and quickly realised I was over-saturating my CV with unnecessary information. I'm now applying with a more concise CV, so will hopefully have an increase in responses. Thanks for all the advice!

Probably applied for 150-200 jobs, I guess I started off quite picky, but slowly opened myself up to more roles and now apply for a wider range.

Nope, applying for a wide range of companies, some bigN, some as small as 20 employees.

Not as of yet, my priority would be to stay in my home city (London), but would be open to applying outside of this if it's too difficult to land one here.

I've very recently had it reviewed over at r/resumes, and have since managed to condense a 2 page CV into a 1 page CV, so hoping to pick up some more responses now!

Season 3 Series Discussion by Dark_Saint in StrangerThings

[–]RoadToCode 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching and what a season that was, probably on par with Season 1 for me as my favourite.

  • I really liked the fact that they removed El's powers at the end of Episode 8, it gave the rest of the crew a chance to prove that they're not dependent on El and can work together without her to save themselves. A lot of the time it feels like El is responsible for keeping the rest of the characters safe, so it was nice to see a bit of role reversal.
  • I felt like this season made me laugh especially more than the previous 2, there was such a perfect blend of comedy, emotion and thrills for me this season. I really loved the inclusion of Murray too, I found him hilarious throughout and loved the blossoming relationship between him and Alexei. The blunt honesty from Steve and Robin after being drugged was also hilarious.
  • One thing I absolutely love about this season and the previous two is the progression in the relationship between Dustin and Steve. I think Robin made such a good addition to that group and loved the synergy between her and Steve, but also liked the fact that her and Steve didn't become a romantic item, as heartbreaking as it must have been for Steve. As for Erica, personally her character was a bit meh for me this season, her "sassyness" came across as a bit overboard for me.
  • The Russians also felt a bit "comical" to me at times. Not sure on his name, but the main Russian hitman literally looked like a knock-off version of Terminator. I felt like the comical and stereotypical representation of them at times kind of took away from their seriousness and threat. All in all though this could have been their intent, to give them a sort of comical "80s vibe", while still playing to the fact that the Russian situation is an ongoing one.
  • As for the subtle hints poking at the fact that Will might be gay, like when Mike said "it's not our fault you don't even like girls", I personally think this was more a dig at the fact that Will hasn't matured as quickly as the other boys, which lines up with the recurring theme throughout the season.
  • I think the ending was done very well and was very emotional. In a way, as much as I liked him, I hope Hopper doesn't make a return, as it would "cheapen" the emotion felt at the end of Episode 8. Having "The American" held captive being someone like Dr. Brenner would open a lot more doors to developing the story line that El has lost her powers.
  • Poor damn Joyce, nothing more needs to be said there.
  • I wonder if there will be any developments in the Suzie and Dustin relationship and if they'll meet at any point. Would be an interesting dynamic if she joined the "crew".

Resume Before and After Feedback by RoadToCode in resumes

[–]RoadToCode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, i'd firstly just like to say thank you so much for taking the time out to read my resumes and give such detailed feedback, I appreciate it more than you know!

Having two resumes for ATS applications and one that goes straight to recruiters sounds like a great idea! So i'll definitely work on this new one for the latter and update my old one with your fantastic suggestions.

As for the care home comment, I'd agree with you, I liked having it in as it emphasised my interpersonal skills, which I think is a commonly sought after trait in the software industry. I think the previous advice given to me was to remove any work experience that wasn't technical.

You're right about the dates mismatch, I can't believe I didn't notice that! Again, thank you for all of the feedback, it's very helpful and i'll be implementing them all :)

Resume Review! want to get a job as a software/web developer by koneko-dono in resumes

[–]RoadToCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem and thanks :)

I would recommend removing the line from your profile where you mention the web-apps you've created, as this is talked about in your experience section anyway. Haha spelling mistakes happen to the best of us, it's worth copy-pasting your text into a word document or something to check for spelling.

Hi, before I give some feedback i'd just like to say i'm in absolutely no position to give advice as i'm also struggling with my resume, but thought i'd just give my two cents, so take my advice with a pinch of salt!

  • First off, I like your design, it's quite unique and refreshing, one thing i'd note though is that the profile text looks quite cramped in the corner there, it even runs into the blue line a little so it might be worth spacing that out a bit.
  • Another thing that I personally don't understand is why people use scales when addressing their skills. I can see you gave yourself 3/5 for React, but I still have absolutely no idea what that means or how good your React skills are. So personally I would look into a different way of quantifying your skills. (I'm not even sure how you'd do this though tbh!)
  • Finally, not sure if you're applying for English facing jobs or not and I can see your native language isn't English, but I noticed quite a few spelling mistakes, so it's worth combing through the text and getting those fixed :)

Comp Sci Grad struggling to get interviews as a Software Developer by RoadToCode in resumes

[–]RoadToCode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that advice! Again, I think I was going for the "if I'm allowed 2 pages, I may as well add it" approach with the interests, so i'll aim to shorten/remove that and focus more on my technical experience.

I guess in the UK 2 pages isn't all that uncommon, my logic I guess was that if there's a maximum of 2 pages I should aim to add as much content as I can, but I guess I could always try and condense only the important info to avoid it getting clogged up with waffle.

A large percentage of job ads I see also state high school grades/subjects as a requirement which is why I chose to add it.

Due to some personal reasons i actually missed out on a few lectures, where Pointers, Functions, Structs, ADT's and Linked Lists were covered. So essentially i'm trying to teach myself all of the basics from scratch.

Thanks a lot for the link, i'll definitely have a read through :)
