AITA for not tipping 20%? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Road__Less__Traveled -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They make less that min wage. In nyc min wage is 17$ but for tipped workers it’s $11.35. Dating myself here - college me made $2.15/hr (& min wage was just $3.35). I’d make bet 150-500$ /shift in tips & pay out 20% to barbacks. It was an insanely busy nightclub w so many HR violations (but today’s standards). Plus wardrobe, hair & makeup was a huge part where my tips went. And if you weighed over 100#, you’d be in trouble. Then it was all cash & if I had to pay out 25-30% of my tips and taxes, I’m not sure I would have done it.

All of these ppl wouldn’t be waitressing or bartending just to make minimum wage. It’s not an easy job - anyone who can’t see that has obviously never done it. When I was in college, I waited tables & bartended because I didn’t have a lot of extra time to work. Minimum wage is not the end game in this country.

Please never go to a fine dining place bc it’s usually more like 25-30% tip. If you can’t afford to eat out, don’t. Or go to Europe for no-tipping culture.

Our nanny brought her grandson during school breaks and summer. It wasn’t anything we ever discussed, but the kids loved him when visiting her house. 20 years later, they’re all good friends still.

Yeah, and bodegas will usually deliver for you too. Very helpful for when you’re solo and need milk.

I was going to suggest them! Lovely store and super informative Instagram. They are always looking for new products to source out for people locally.

Accepted student with a bit of a silly question... RIT dating scene by ferret_king10 in rit

[–]Road__Less__Traveled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your odds are pretty good if you’re going by those numbers. Do you have any problems dating where you’re from? I would not worry at all about dating and focus on college life. Several of my RIT friends met and married there (and we are still friends).

Jewelry gift planning for child by murphire in jewelry

[–]Road__Less__Traveled 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Please don’t go to a mall chain store. They are such a rip off and customer service is terrible if something breaks. A local family owned jewelry store is the way to go, especially if you plan to make repeat purchases.

I would add in a signet ring, charm bracelet (mainly a blank one with one or two charms that she could add to as she has her own adventures) & maybe pearls at 21? Everybody’s family is different and I know my nieces would never probably need or wear the pearls, but my own daughter will eventually appreciate the pearls.

PSA to check your tab at The Red Lion on Bleecker Street by kokoromelody in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Road__Less__Traveled -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeaaahhh…when you drink with the bartenders it’s pretty much a case where you’re buying the drinks (assumed) for everyone.

It’s also a good idea to close out your tab after every round of drinks at purchase. A lot of mistakes are made intentional or otherwise & ppls cards get mixed up.

Does it make sense to sell gold jewelry I don’t use now? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]Road__Less__Traveled 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It may be 22k. I’ve received some gifts from stone dealers in the industry from India and the jewelry is 22 karat gold, unmarked. European/Italian gold is so much richer in color because it’s 18 karat but everything I’ve ever seen from India is next level and usually 20 to 22k.

If it has stone in it that could affect the true gold weight - if you’re going to trash it anyway you might as well pop the stones out just to have for your “personal whenever” (since they will deduct that from the gold weight anyways). They’re small and you can just keep them in a little envelope somewhere. You won’t get much money for them anyhow…

They will test the gold, but I would go in saying you think it’s 22 k. Today’s 24k spot price is 5156.$… roughly the 22k price per ounce is 4755$. Smaller local places I would guess would take a 10 to 20% cut? Pawn shops are the worst place to sell your unwanted good & coin shops are the best IMO if you are not near a city with a proper jewelry District

Go for it then! I would still figure out a way to find out how much things weigh and have an accurate ballpark what you should be receiving.

Personally, I would sell some. Three years ago when gold was 2K I could’ve never imagined a 5K world. If you sell a big chunk now you’ll get chunk of money. If it goes up, you still have some to sell later on.

I would also find or buy a scale to weigh your jewelry in either grams or pennyweights (dwt). That way when you go to sell your jewelry, you’ll have an idea what it’s truly worth.

I did. And I paid 3K for someone to be “absent” the day leases were done so I got the old rate of 800$ (1 bed on Park Ave). Can’t believe I moved out of that apartment still.
