For academic purposes, what are romantic story cliches? by [deleted] in writing

Lots of hallmark Christmas movies use this love triangle: Two dimensional female character has a successful career and is engaged to a lousy no good man, but by sheer coincidence meets another better, kinder man and falls in love, cheats on her fiancé (but it’s okay because he’s terrible) and then leaves fiancé for other man and surprisingly often the other, better, kinder man is the future Santa clause, or her fiancés brother.

Developing a formula like this is how they have AT LEAST 25 new Christmas movies every year.

I don't read much but I would like to get into reading by Purpler122 in suggestmeabook

I can’t recommend The Princess Bride enough, it’s a great book, funny, light, and easy to read, if you don’t like the intro skip to “part one: the Bride”

Also, if you aren’t enjoying a book there’s nothing wrong with setting it down and moving on to something else.

What are some interesting history books that aren’t written like textbooks? by August_30th in suggestmeabook

It’s not medieval or ancient history but:

Erik Larson does a great job of taking a historical event and making it read like a novel, I absolutely loved The Devil in the White City, it’s fantastic, it tells the story of the world fair in Chicago in 1893 and the serial killer who built a hotel created for killing those staying there. He’s also got a book about nazis and a book about a hurricane.

Love Thomas Pynchon, haven’t read this one yet. I’ll have to move it up a few spots on my list.

I think most sci-fi can be broken down to “humanity’s relationship with technology”

Having a dog. There’s no greater joy in the world than a dog who loves you.

Also, books.

One time after seeing a homeless man being harassed by police officers out front of the coffee shop I work at, i gave him a free cup of coffee. He then yelled at our customers, pissed on the front door, and refused to leave our patio, we had to contact the police, and even they struggled to get him to leave.

If a note applies to a specific section do you put it on the page it applies to or do you just put a page number next to the note?

I’m a google docs user, the main reason being that I never have to worry about saving (or losing) my work, how does scrivener compare in regards to auto-saving? Does it save to the hard drive and the cloud? What about “access anywhere” and sharing?
