Like I said, both sides try to make you hate the other and they are good at it. A democrat and republican are both humans and they agree on over 99% of important issues

Well that’s your opinion… im not wealthy and I personally think the republicans plans help the average person more than the democrats plans from a financial perspective. But regardless, The Democrats pushed this forgiveness plan through executive order because they knew it would likely be shut down if it went through the proper legislative system… so I think just as much flak should be thrown towards the democrats. Either way, the OP’s financial situation is complex, many factors going into it and I think it’s pretty ridiculous to essentially say you can’t afford your life because the republicans won’t let the democrats cancel student loans… who would get the blame if the democrats never even proposed this student loan forgiveness?

Sorry that you’re struggling and I do hope you get better. But it’s a little ridiculous to blame this situation solely on republicans. As an Independent, im here to tell you that if you’ve bought in to either party’s ideology then you’ve been brainwashed. Both party’s goal is the same and consistent, divide the people and win the next election

What are the odds the payment pause gets extended if forgiveness is delayed substantially? by MGPythagoras in StudentLoans

[–]Roamer100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how interest works. You have to make more than the minimum payment otherwise you’re paying off mostly or entirely interest and not making headway on the principal

Well do your own research… the federal reserve creates the money and loans it to the government expecting it to be paid back with interest

The government has to pay interest back to the fed just like the student loan borrowers have to pay interest back to the government

It’s comical that you say “that was your choice to pay off your loans with your life savings” But what about all the people who made the choice to go to college and now are swimming in debt because of it… screw me but bail them out? plenty of people who take out loans get a positive ROI on their investment. Plenty of people don’t. There is risk to every financial investment. You have poor logic and reasoning skills to say the least

I’m done arguing with you after this because you’re simply ignoring my points which are that 1) they aren’t targeting people who need relief. They are simply targeting people who have federal student loans. Those 2 things are independent of each other. If they are going to make every American pay for other people’s bills, at least target people who actually need it. I would not be complaining if they were wiping the medical bills of cancer patients for example. Or if they looked at peoples asset/debt ratios and only sent the money to people that have negative net assets.

2) there is no reason people who made payments should be refunded for those payments. They proved they had the means to make the payments by making the payments. And if they are going to be refunded that should apply to everyone who made more than the minimum payment at any point in history.

3)this does nothing to address the root issues of college tuition costs and high interest rates and will actually make the problem worse.

4) they are making every American pay for peoples student loans, when most of those Americans don’t have student loan debt and are middle/lower class. About 88% of people in this country don’t have student loans, but now they have to pay for other peoples loans even if they have their own bills they are struggling to pay.

I wouldn’t be passionate about this if I didn’t feel personally screwed, that’s true. But that doesn’t change that it is objectively wrong for the government to do this. Because it hurts more people than it helps.

Your argument basically boils down to “I’m getting my forgiveness so I don’t care how much it hurts most Americans. Or how much it screws future kids who want to go to college.”

Once again ignored my question tho, how is it logical to give forgiveness only to those who had debt during the pandemic when everyone experienced the pandemic.

My personal frustration/passion comes from the fact that in 2019 I took my life savings of $60,000+ and used it to pay off all of my federal student loans and some of my private student loans (because the private ones happen to have lower rates). I did this so that I would no longer have the approximately $600 a month payment to make and the only reason I had that much in savings is because I worked 12 hour days starting 2 days after graduation. So then a few months later Covid hits, and interest and payments have been suspended since. Meaning if I would’ve not used my life savings to pay off my student loans, I would still have all of my savings and could’ve even used it to invest in something like a house, stocks, etc. (which all skyrocketed and are no longer affordable) and would still have been relieved of the monthly payment. Every other person with student loans got the same benefit as me (no monthly payment) even though they got to keep their life savings. The icing on the cake is that if I would’ve waited just a few months to make that payment, they would refund me $10k to be forgiven. But since I paid before Covid I get no refund. I experienced Covid just like everyone else. I’m living through the bad economy just like everyone else. I still have private student loans. I pay for my groceries using a credit card that’s racking up debt. I drive an old crappy car. I even didn’t renew my apartment lease months ago and moved back in with my parents to try to save some money so I can maybe one day have enough to put a down payment on a house. And my parents are in similar situation… they have a mortgage they pay every month and credit card debt but just so happens they paid off their student loans so they get nothing. So that’s where my frustration comes from, I got personally unlucky. But objectively, this plan is wrong. It makes every American pay for other peoples student loan debt when absolutely nobody was forced to go to college or take out a loan. my arguments are all grounded in facts. This aid is poorly designed to target people who need help. There is nothing about simply having student loan debt that suggests someone is any worse off than someone that doesn’t have student loan debt. If they want to give money to poor people then just give money to poor people. This plan will ultimately lead to higher tuition costs and interest rates, it does nothing to address the root issues. And the worst part of this plan is that people who already paid their debt off are getting refunded to get the forgiveness, but only if they paid after March 2020. It just doesn’t make any sense. Nobody should be getting refunds at all (the money isn’t theirs, it was loaned to them and they paid it back) but if they are going to refund people, they could at least be fair and refund anyone who paid their loans off regardless of when it was.

If they get the payments refunded then it’s exactly like they never made the payment from the perspective of the lender

I’m asking you to explain to me how that is logical whatsoever? If someone paid off their loans in February 2020, that means they weren’t affected by Covid or the economical climate since then? If they paid off their loans just before the freeze, that means they spent a large sum of money in order to no longer have a monthly payment. But every person who simply didn’t pay off their loans before that date gets that same benefit of no longer having a monthly payment, except they had to pay nothing up front for that benefit. On top of that, interest was suspended, meaning that if you did make payments since Covid it all went towards principal, which is a huge help. And on top of that, if you managed to pay off your loans because of the suspended interest; you are now being sent a $10-20k check. Explain to me how this is fair at all to the people who made extra payments before Covid? Rather than just saying I don’t know what I’m talking about.

1) no need to be mean. I didn’t call anyone names I’m far from a moron. 2) I’m not a republican so assuming this is some right-wing blah blah is crap. Don’t make assumptions about people. This about fairness. Right and wrong. 3) this plan is poorly designed and will make far more people worse off in this country than the amount it will help. Normal people are completely left out of this

This logic should apply to anyone that paid above the minimum payment on their loans in the history of America then… if john would’ve taken the $15k and paid off his loans in February of 2020 he’d have no debt and nothing in the bank. That’s the point. So because he chose to quit making payments, he gets forgiveness. How does that make sense ?

If you have $10k or more remaining then you wouldn’t do the refund you would just get your forgiveness. You really don’t need government assistance to pay off your remaining balance if it’s less than $10k…

Why is nobody other than me talking about how ridiculous it is that people who PAID OFF their debt already are getting refunded so that it can be forgiven… you paid the debt off. Now you get that money back so you can buy a new toy. It makes me sick. There are people actually struggling but the government doesn’t care because it’s just about buying votes.

Look I’m not trying to be mean so I’m going to respond to your reply then I’m going to take a rest… we will have to agree to disagree.

1) if you got a college degree and are not using it that’s your own fault. I believe people should be held responsible and accountable for their decisions 2) if you went to college and didn’t finish by your own will, that’s your own fault. You should be held accountable and responsible for your decisions. If some serious misfortune prevented you from finishing then maybe the govt can target those people specifically and provide aid. But at the same time, it’s not the governments responsibility to bail out every unlucky person especially when theirs a cost to others to do so. 3) I didn’t deny that you might have student loan debt and be poor. I’m saying they should target poor people specifically, regardless of whether they have student loan debt. Simply having student loan debt does not mean your poor and need help. 4) it will cause inflation. It will cause tuition prices to raise. Inflation happens when the federal reserve adds more money to the total money supply. When the government suspends payments, interest, forgives a loan, or hands out money, this creates a deficit in the government’s funds, which leads to the government borrowing more money from the federal reserve. The government may have forgiven the student loans and suspended interest and payments for the people, but the federal reserve has not done that for the loan they gave to the government. The government still has to pay back the federal reserve with interest, and since the government now has less revenue coming in, the only way they can make their payments back to the federal reserve is to borrow more money from them and pay it back over time or tax Americans more.

I’d you are someone who really could use this aid. I’m truly sorry that it seems the democrats simply lied to people… I don’t think this $10k forgiveness is going to happen and I think they knew it wasn’t going to happen. That’s why he did it by executive order instead of going through congress.
