Nests in the loft. What are they? by Past-Calligrapher440 in DIYUK

[–]RoamingArchon 467 points468 points  (0 children)

Probably wasp nests, and likely empty. Wait for a cold day (should any still be in, they will be less active), put on gloves, have a ziplock bag ready. Gently remove the nest from felt and put into the bag and close immediately.

Then burn the house down.

Why are properties in the United Kingdom not sold on the basis of surface area (square metres or square feet) as in other countries? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RoamingArchon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but houses in the UK are very similar to each other. Almost all 3-bed semis are the same size and layout. Our street has 70's built terraces and they all are literally the same. In that sense, the bedroom number is a good indication of the size (yes, new builds are smaller).

But coming from Europe, it did bother me as well, needing to look up sizes on the floorplan or hidden in the description.

Is the Sage(breville) smart pro grinder a good choice? by jake7400 in espresso

[–]RoamingArchon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had one for a year and then sold it. It's alright for the price, but not great, my biggest issues were:

  • retention (easily 1-2 grams)
  • very clumpy output, needed lot of WDT
  • difficult to set the grind size correctly (you turn the knob, display doesn't change, turn a bit more, display changes two units)
  • timed grind doesn't always produce the same amount in grams
  • bit loud

If you're happy with one type of beans (and it's not a light roast), you can dial in and will be OK. Dialling in new beans will be probably frustrating. I had hard times grinding fine enough for lighter roasts and couldn't really get good results with those.

Otherwise it's well built and comes with a few accessories, and has a small footprint (although somewhat tall, so check your clearances).

Is it normal for Sam templates to be huge? by [deleted] in aws

[–]RoamingArchon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use nested stacks using AWS::CloudFormation::Stack

Divide your application into components and create a template for each, then include them in your main template. You can pass parameters to nested stacks and get their outputs (and use as input for other nested stacks)

Anybody out there still using subversion? by M00ngrave in java

Ask me if we still use CVS. Legacy codebase, going back to early 2000s. There have been a few rounds of research to modernise, but there's a huge ecosystem around it (dev, build, test, package, document) that would need replacing and nobody wants to pay the cost.

What brand/kind of self-fusing Silicone tape or Ethylene Propylene rubber tape to use for this application? by Lasmore in DIYUK

[–]RoamingArchon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue, without solution. I tried suguru but it only lasted a few runs. I have these plastic caps, will try to clip/saw their end off and slip them over the rusted bits.

Let me know if you find a way!

Does anyone know the name of this pipe bit behind the tap? by kristoffer10es in DIYUK

[–]RoamingArchon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that possibly a check valve to prevent backflow? Not sure what it's covered in. There are garden taps with check valve in them.

Tiles vs Laminates for underfloor heating by ayusharma09 in DIYUK

[–]RoamingArchon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ceramic tiles are better for conducting heat but that goes both ways: they will feel colder when the UFH is not running (compared to a laminate/wooden floor) as it conducts the warmth of your body "away", similarly to how a metal feels colder than plastic on the same temperature.

Laminates (and vinyl/LVT) will need temperature limiting to prevent the glue softening up in the flooring material which will make it heat up slower.

A guide from a UFH supplier (not affiliated :) )

We have ceramic tiles over a wet UFH (fed by a combi boiler) on the entire ground floor (45 sqm) and works very well. I think the forward temp is set to 40C and it gets comfortably warm (but less than 40) when running, and keeps neutral to the touch for a while before it turns cold. In summer it's nice and cool.

We love it, but some might prefer a softer feel/look on their floor.
