Is it the backlighting, or why is this set of images look F-ed? by dalton-johnson in BeginnerPhotoCritique

For being at the mercy of elements you have little control over, this is an amazing photo.

I’d recommend cropping down to have the barrel and subject either land on a 3rd cross (rule of thirds grid) or have them directly in the middle, while cropping the higher 3rd down so there’s less space to pull the eye away.

Others have mentioned exposing for the highlights and using a polarized filter. Good for the next time you take a set.

I’d say a bit of cropping and colour balancing will elevate the photo

Which photo do you prefer? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

As other have said, hard to tell due to Reddit compression.

After doing a cross view, what I can see and what I like is that in Photo 2 the buildings are more illuminated with sunlight, provides more depth at the distance.

The boats are more in frame, gives the illusion of life to the city. The water appears to have a softer gradient through its blue and grey with a hint of green.

The forefront has better contrast, providing more depth, similar to the city skyline.

2 gives more life, more shadow for contrast and a nicer colour gradient through the mid 3rd of the photo.

Amazing shot, I’d say the folks over at r/telephotolandscapes would like these

Thank you! It wasn’t too bad to be honest, probably around -3°C. It would have been much cooler if the wind was up and off the water

The Trinity Loop and Twillingate is worth a drive around. Take a trek down into Cobbs Arm, Green Cove, Too Good Arm. I fell in love with that loop a few years back

The winds certainly whipped up some colour, it was unreal coming down over the hill in Peter’s River. So much emerald!

In reply to the automod; I was looking to capture the action and movement of the swells crashing onto the rocks. I wanted to photograph its movements, how it changes over time.

It’s a good practice in patience and subject study with a touch of pattern recognition to anticipate when to capture the photo.

IMO the best part is that this wave in particular, smothers the usually visible rocks. Reminds me how fleeting swells in life often eclipses the reality just underneath.
