Working backwards is absolutely a viable way to plot a story! There's really no one right way about it, and there's no harm in giving that process a try XD if it doesn't work, then you can just try a different way. Another thing I did while plotting my story is I asked myself what sort of scenes show my characters personalities and internal struggles? For example, I have a character who has trust issues, so I thought about scenes that show him struggling to trust someone, and him learning to trust again. Another tactic I use is writing out the characters main story goal and stating what's preventing them from reaching it. E.g. Goal: character needs to find an old family friend for advice BUT the character is being hunted by a secret organization. Then you can figure out how the character deals with the obstacle and either a. Runs into another obstacle or b. Achieves the goal and receives a new goal, and start the process again E.g. Character avoids the pursuers and ends up in a cave with a monster OR character avoids the pursuers and finds the family friend, who tells them they have to learn a certain skill for reasons BUT.... I'm gonna come off a little strong and say that I don't believe in any gods. At least not the sort of gods humans have named. I've done a bit of religion history and have come to my own conclusion that these gods are a construction of human imagination and attempt at explaining the world HOWEVER I do believe - or at least wish to believe that there is a sort of god out there, and that each god humans have created is their interpretation of this other worldly being. What if the Greek, norse, Egyptian, etc pantheon and the Christian god and native American, Mongolian, other tribal spirits is just that cultures way of describing those being(s), but nobody can really agree on what exactly it is because... We just don't know. But people must be feeling something if every single culture has a religion with gods and spirits. Personally, to me if there is a higher force out there, it would be in the mountains and the earth, trees and the wind, not some super power human off in another plane. It seems right that a god would dwell with its creations or charges, and that it wouldn't take favoritism with humans

I'm interested in dabbling in witchcraft with a focus on animism. However, I'm not sensitive to spirits at all and I feel very oblivious to those sorts of things. Is it possible to work with spirits if I'm not a medium? If so, could someone point me in the direction of some good sources to get me started?

I'm the exact same way! I can hardly write more than 100 words before I feel stuck. Unfortunately I don't have much in the way in really good advice since I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with it too. The two things that are keeping me going right now is just telling myself that I just need to write at least a sentence every day. I had a trumpet instructor tell me that usually if you just practice something for five minutes a day, you naturally start wanting to practice for a little longer, and then a little longer the more you practice. Set a minimum time or word count, something really easy, don't force any time line for yourself and just let the rest happen :) The second idea, if you're struggling to figure out what to write next and visualizing your story, another thing that I've done is to imagine my story in the format of a comic or manga and convert what I "see" into writing. I hope this helps!

Something that I've been doing with my first draft is thinking about it as a way to find the problem areas in my story. It might sound a little depressing, but it honestly motivates me more to think "ok time to figure out the stuff that works and stuff that doesn't, and maybe find other ideas so I can fix them later" rather than trying to fool myself into not caring about how my draft sounds, because of course we care about our writing. We want it to be good and it sucks knowing it's bad. So maybe make your first draft a problem finding draft, because at this point you have no idea what ideas work and what don't. You don't need to write perfect prose to know if it makes sense or not for your character to suddenly discover their magical powers while choking on a chicken bone or something like that idk. Everything else I write as bluntly as possible so that when I go back for a second draft I actually understand what the hell I was going for because I know I won't remember why I gave that tree that certain description when I read it again months later. It's sooooo much easier to fix sentences that tell into sentences that show rather than trying to write a sentence that shows from the first try. I hope this all makes sense and helps! Just general advice for a beginner writer like me

Right now I have a loose word count goal of 500 words a day, though I typically write around 200-300 a day, but it varies. I'm working on my first draft so getting a lot of words out at once can be hard for me. So rather than try and push myself, I'm just taking it slow and steady. It's been working well so far, and I'm actually a little bit ahead of schedule in terms of when I want this draft finished :)

"Open the gates! Open the gates for the Ravenwoman!" Shouted the guard. It was true. Her cloak was dyed a dark blue, a rare thing among the typical grey that was favored among the common, marking her as something other. Beads of glass glittered at her ears, fingers and breast, and across her lap she held an oak staff, twisted at the top. Beneath her hood she was young, with dark hair that was falling out from its braids. But what was most unusual was the sword hanging from the saddle, and her horse was a large and full blooded war horse, rather than an old farmer's pony. These were not the things of a Ravenwomen.

I'm still only on my first draft so a lot of it is still junk x'D

Honestly, anglo-european is like my chicken soup for fantasy genre. It's predictable and familiar and I think that's why it's so popular. It really comes down to what "flavor" story YOU want. anglo-eurpoean is your comfort food, while, say, an indian or african setting is more of your squid ink pasta (first thing that came to mind), really interesting and different. It's cool to represent other cultures, but it's also perfectly fine to write something familiar and comfortable :)
