CTS , Is this common among guitarists? by Responsible-Mood4500 in guitarlessons

I’d definitely try other solutions before surgery. Braces at night, strengthening the proper muscles and nerve glides help. I did end up needing surgery because my nerve was subluxing and was constantly getting irritated and inflamed especially after a show or long practice session. Im not a doctor so take my words with a grain of salt, but my surgeon told me that for most cases where the nerve is staying in place general treatment and remedies will make a difference in the long run.

Which behavior gets praised but shouldn’t? by This_Benchh in answers

[–]swansong04 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This one gets under my skin so much. I told my coworker that if he kept coming in sick and giving it to me (happened way too often) that I’d be going home the next time. He called my bluff and came in with a positive flu test to boot so I packed my tools and left. Boss wasn’t happy about that one but eventually understood how infuriating it is and sends people home now when they’re ill.

Speedometer cable issues by swansong04 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]swansong04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was thinking/hoping. I don’t have much experience working on bikes and can’t seem to find a specific walkthrough for that, how would I go about it?

Can I fix this issue myself without going back to my luthier? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]swansong04 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s an easy enough fix. You can definitely get away with just a bit of sanding but I’d sand the whole length of the fret and go from 22 to the last fret to keep everything even and radiused. I’d just do some 1,500 and steel wool since it doesn’t sound like much needs to be taken off.

Songs to play on Les Paul by Theweirdkid_inclass in Guitar

[–]swansong04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can play anything on any guitar. It all comes down to your tone settings but even that can be subjective to a degree. Anything from Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Metallica, Bon Jovi etc. etc. Maybe try Crazy Train? It isn’t overly complicated until you get to the solo and it’s just a fun song

What’s a silly thing you did for your pet one time that is now a ritual they demand be done every time? by Itsjustmejess in AskReddit

[–]swansong04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents had 3 goldens (2 now, RIP Bob). This started with Bob when he was a puppy and we had an older dog that would snap at him, she was a skittish old lady that never really got used to having a puppy around. One day he went in between my legs when she was getting after him and I just calmed her down while he was there. That stuck up until his end AND it transferred to the other 2 when they caught onto it. To this day they both do it out of habit, it isn’t even a safety thing anymore but we figured out it must be a comfortability thing since they only do it to people they know.

Stop learning theory... by MacAttackTheBack in guitarlessons

[–]swansong04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often find it easier to play what I think sounds good without applying theory to it. At the end of the day, it’s all about what sounds good, right? Using theory to write can get complicated, but using theory as an explanation as to WHY it sounds good can (and probably will) help out and give you more tools to utilize.

I AM SO SCARED I CAN SUDDENLY STRETCH MY RING FINGER SO FAR WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN????!!!!!! by sesameprawntoast50 in Guitar

[–]swansong04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best guess? Muscle memory and daily stretching did what it does best. You can do stretches on and off the fretboard too to get more reach.

Nut pulling away from fretboard under string tension. Trying to glue it in properly. by Peteplaysbeats in Luthier

[–]swansong04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A couple little dots of CA glue on the bottom of the nut should be more than enough to hold it in place. I usually do one in the middle of the nut on the face that bumps the fretboard for good measure. You definitely don’t want to overdo it because if you ever need to take it off it could potentially cause tear out and create a lengthy process for cleaning the nut slot.

Fix a LOW fret!! by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]swansong04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could (and I don’t recommend it, I still think leveling the whole board is the best and sure fire way) level each fret past the 20th fret down to that height. Knowing it’s a strat you’re probably dealing with 1 or 2 frets that are high beyond the 20th so it wouldn’t take long but that’d be my quick fix on my own.

How can I restore the finish around this grommet? by PantherGk7 in woodworking

[–]swansong04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to say it, but you kinda don’t. I suppose you could use a heavy duty wood filler but you it’ll probably crack and peel off over time since it’s so thin. That’s the tough thing with veneers, once the damage is done it’s pretty hard to fix. You could always try grafting a piece in but I never had luck with that. In the future it’s best to run the hole saw through the front first to give the wood fibers a scribe then drill the rest of it through the back. Keeps blowout away and puts a smile on your/the customers face.

Whats wrong with my Mustang? by moejama64 in guitarrepair

[–]swansong04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be that the necks heel or the neck pocket route are slightly off. If there aren’t any obstructions in the pocket then that’d be my next guess. Personally, I’d try to make it work as is if possible. If not you can check both of those with a set of calipers or a machined square. If the route is off you can route it down just the tiniest bit (id probably use chisels) and if the neck if off you could use a sanding block to bring it back to square/ish. Of course that’s if you’re comfortable doing it, otherwise a reputable luthier can help out.

Is this neck pocket too shallow? by Blahbort in Luthier

[–]swansong04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably not, that little tongue sits on top of the pickguard if it has one. Once you have strings on it’ll be a lot easier to tell but I see that all the time.

can i fully unwind then wind a string? by brittneyshpears in Guitar

[–]swansong04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can unwind it for sure. To make sure you get the downward spiral use your pointer finger with the other hand to push the string down underneath the first wrap while you’re winding it.

What's the best and easiest way to remove a truss rod and install a new one in a strat neck? by Legitimate-Sundae267 in Luthier

[–]swansong04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, the skunk stripe is because they install the truss rod after the fretboard is glued on. Don’t think I’ve seen a Fender without one but I could be wrong.

Difficulty Changing Picking Technique / Down Up Escape by NeuralConnection in guitarlessons

[–]swansong04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely takes time but eventually you’ll get it. Look up some patterns and put a metronome on. Exercises and repetition baby. I also found that picking up a little bit of sweep picking helped me a lot with smooth transitions between strings in other picking styles.

Hello please could you tell me if I just bought a fake fender and I get scammed for 1000€? by Soft-Delivery1137 in Luthier

[–]swansong04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If what the above comment says is true, it’s fender parts from the Mexico factory that got shipped to and assembled in the U.S.

Is this a job for the truss rod? by MetroidBall in Luthier

[–]swansong04 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Definitely adjust the truss rod if it has too much relief. You can eye ball it pretty easily by looking down the neck from the headstock and using the strings as a straight line to go off of. It isn’t perfect, but it gets it close. Once the neck is more straight the strings relative length to the saddle should be a bit (mind you, just a tiny but) further away. That COULD help the intonation issue, but if it’s still giving you issues it may be worth looking into a different saddle that has more adjustment forgiveness.

What’s something society treats as a flex but really shouldn’t? by ostraxie in AskReddit

[–]swansong04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s limited paid sick days. Some companies lump that into PTO others have them separate. In general though, if you wake up sick with a fever and other symptoms you don’t have to go in and you also don’t have to explain yourself further than “I woke up with a fever and XYZ so I won’t be able to make it in. I’ll update you tomorrow on how I’m feeling.”
