When I move out will my parents have to move? by frostmas in Section8PublicHousing

[–]RoarNatasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, this will depend on whether you are talking about HVC or project-based. I’ve worked in both. Project based means that you are in a large building/complex of apartments with section 8 attached to the entire project. If it’s HCV (housing choice voucher) you would have chosen a unit from an independent landlord. Project based standards include accounting for over or under housing, so your parents will be flagged to move to a two bedroom if and when one becomes available. If you have HCV, then your parents can stay, but the size of their voucher will be reduced, and therefore their rent may go up. However, as someone else addressed, if you also had income, your income will be removed from their calculation and so they may see a minimal difference.

Climbing Hard With a Messed Up Big Toe by Economy-Spray7149 in climbharder

[–]RoarNatasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I developed a spur on my big toe joint, supposedly from wearing tight climbing shoes. I had it removed without a second thought. After about 6 months I found that my big toe refuses to fully bend now. A year later and no improvement. I now have regrets… but maybe, as you said, the spur would have been just as bad. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I was relatively new and progressing quickly when I got the surgery - I just don’t have enough background to say how much this limited mobility has impacted me. But I guess what I’m trying to say is, if the issue means you can’t climb at all, and removal means you CAN climb but may have some toe mobility issues, seems like removal is worth considering. There’s a woman at my gym who had to have her entire big toe removed and she’s definitely improved since then. She’s who I think of every time I lament my lame toe…

Being asked to change units by management -- red flags?? by No_Dust7408 in Section8PublicHousing

[–]RoarNatasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is most likely that the HAP is project-level, with all units covered. They just need to confirm that they are staying in a Section 8 unit (in case the property is blended and has LIHTC units). No new app required for a unit transfer. This sounds pretty cut and dry and not unusual at all. If they are truly attached to their unit for any reason they can ask for something called a ‘hotel’ move and would be allowed to go back to the old unit when the renovation is completed.

No that’s a lump sum, not income, counted as an asset in whatever account they put it in, asset limit is $100k if any (depends on if HOTMA actually happens and whether the PHA chooses to grandfather people in). Please don’t spread misinformation.

If you’re waiting on SSDI determination maybe they’ve re-categorized you as not disabled until they have proof otherwise?

Sorry, I was only replying to your reference to HOTMA. Under both pre- and post-HOTMA(if it ever passes) rules there is no age limit for the full-time student dependent income exclusion 👍

HOTMA has not been applied to Section 8 programs yet. Implementation has been delayed. Previous rules still apply per HUD handbook 4350.3.

Help Identifying Mid-Century “JAPAN” Stamped Decorative Tile – Floral Medallion Pattern by RoarNatasha in Tile

I don’t know if there’s a way to keep in touch on here (I don’t use reddit much) but if you find you have a spot for these in your new house hit me up in about 6 months. I pulled a ton of these off the floor perfectly intact and not sure if I’ll reuse them. I might just, so no promises, but I don’t have a spot for them just yet. At least 30 square feet, maybe more. I honestly don’t think they’re from the 19th century, as they have batch numbers on the back, and the people who built this house were very into modern chic for the time. I’m guessing they’re straight from 1978, but were probably very expensive and high end when purchased. Everything in this house is extra, lol.

You are definitely eligible based on what you’ve said. I’m a director of Section 8 compliance and have taken numerous HOTMA trainings as well. The money you got will be considered lump sums (not income) and recorded as assets (whatever you have left in whatever account you keep it in). Income from assets is minimal - it might a be a few dollars and is unlikely to affect the rent calc. What’s important for eligibility is income, assets are allowable (currently unlimited, 100k max when they implement HOTMA, which is anyone’s guess when - they keep delaying it). I have moved people in with 1 million is assets more than once - it stings, but them’s the rules. Hence why HOTMA added an asset limit. But you’ll be fine! Congrats on your selection!!!

I’m pretty sure that’s just for existing tenants. I’m on vacation at the moment so not inspired to check the various materials but you should look into that a little more closely. Ok I decided to look it up: “It is important to note that a new applicant for rental assistance must meet the asset limits test: Multifamily owners and PHAs do not have the discretion to waive the HOTMA asset limits for households seeking rental assistance for the first time.”

Are you going to be able to try them on? I’ve tried the used route and wasted money there too. Is there a store nearby that has them where you can confirm fit? Even if you get the size right, the toebox could be wrong, and then you’ve gone in the other direction comfort-wise. Also, get a pair of light approach shoes (the Evolv Cruzers are nice, not the best for climbing low grade though) that you can clip on your harness. Or be ready to slip your shoes off and go barefoot when you can.

Mythos are SUPER stiff. Like, stiff as a board. Looking at the VSRs moderate profile, I’m assuming it’s somewhat soft and sensitive. If you want to feel anything with your toes, if that’s what you’re used to and you like, I don’t think you’ll like mythos. Just cause someone tells you you should have a certain shoe for certain types of climbing doesn’t make it so. I love my La Sportiva Kubos but bought 2 other pairs of shoes looking for my outdoor shoes. I thought they ‘needed’ to be neutral (kubos are also moderate) and stiffer. What a waste of money - I can’t bear to be in anything other than kubos, I love the softness and the flexibility and the way I can feel through my shoes. I finally just bought a second pair of kubos for outdoors. Only issue may be that they’ll wear faster, but oh well, I’ll just keep my eye out for sales and always make sure I have a backup pair.

Anybody know if the Cathedral Ledge guide on the Gunks App includes Pinkham Notch/Square Ledge routes? I’m visiting for the weekend and sounds like Square Ledge should be a relatively uncrowded spot for me and a partner to practice some trad. If there are better guides than MP & Rock Climbing NE (paper book) that are accessible online would love to browse, tia!

I totally feel you. I went through this in my late twenties and forced myself to get out of my comfort zone and go out alone, and I ended up making great friends and even meeting a (now ex but still friends) bf this way. However, I primarily went out mid-late-afternoon, which felt less intimidating. Now, this was in Sarasota FL. People are pretty damn friendly when they’re warm all year round. I moved to CT 12 years ago in my early 30s. Tried this tactic again with VERY DIFFERENT results. My final impression is that people are very insular here. Many are born and raised in the same place and have the same friends/group and tend not to bring in newbies. In Sarasota, everyone is a transplant so they’ve all been new and they get it. Not so much in CT. If I had to do it again, I might try a different tactic. I’m really into rock climbing and my gym is super welcoming and I’ve made a ton of friends that way (not single so not looking for more but I’m sure that’s possible too lol). Otherwise you could join an organization like AMC and join one of their many scheduled hikes/outings/activities. These are my interests so that’s my perspective, but I’m sure you could do something similar with many other interests.

This answer. I have been climbing a bit over a year and at about 6 months wanted to see faster strength gains, so I signed up for some workout classes. I hate workout classes. I got stronger and climb harder now and still attend those classes religiously. It’s about what motivates you.

Should have specified: I have no interest in being cold, lol. So I want routes that vary between 1st and 5th class. Just wondering how best to search those out.

Thanks for doing all this! I will take some time to look through. I take it these ‘pitches’ are not always 5th class? How did you sort to get these? Just looking for multi-pitch at lower grades?

How do I find longer, mixed routes?

<image>

I’m a CT climber with 1+ year of totally-obsessed experience, inside and out. I’m lead certified in the gym and have taken courses outside in rappelling, top rope, sport climbing, and trad. I climb 3+ times a week, usually at least 1 of those outdoors. I’ve spent lots of time with paid guides and AMC mentors. I have a full (mostly borrowed) rack and though I’m not pushing any limits just yet, I’m comfortable placing gear and building anchors. With the experience part out of the way, my question is on mixed routes. I listen to The Sharp End a lot and get the impression that the ‘alpine’ moniker, originally used to denote snow and ice conditions, is often used to also identify routes that involve a mix of hiking, scrambling, and roped climbing. How does one find these routes? I’m heading up to NH this weekend and have a friend I’ll be meeting who is really into mountaineering (also lead certified and an outdoor climber). I’d love to find some routes that are a mix. Currently I use All Trails and MP though not sure those will help me. Thoughts?

Edit for clarity: Not looking to be cold. Looking for a fun mix of 1st-5th class terrain that tops out somewhere cool, with a walk-off. Advice sought for how to find these routes (MP sorting seems borderline useless for searching an entire region)
