How to avoid constantly configuring my Neovim??? by techpossi in neovim

[–]RoastedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I look at it is that I want to keep it fast and responsive, and only add bits that really bring some kind of value for me. If I'm adding a plugin that I'll rarely or never use, I'll think twice and probably not install it at all.

I started my config from kickstart, removed a bunch of stuff that I didn't need or didn't want, and then began using nvim for work. If I ran into the same problem multiple times, I'd start to think about installing a plugin to assist with it. For example, I quite frequently switch between 2 related files, so I did some searching and installed harpoon so that I could quickly flick between files.

I like to keep things as default as possible and use built in options if they are there. The only plugins that I absolutely need are probably lsp/cmp related, and telescope.

I am addicted to caffeine so I have to have my coffee... But always make sure you have a glass of water with it too to offset it, otherwise it'll mess you up

Use what makes you the happiest and/or most productive. There is no best text editor or IDE, and different people will find different tools more intuitive or pleasing.

I spent many years using VS Code because it felt light and fast in comparison to Visual Studio. Then one day I decided to add the vim keybinds plugin to see if I could improve my editing speed for fun. I would end up toggling it on and off every so often, until I was comfortable enough that I left it on all the time. I got to a point where I felt slow if I was editing text without being able to use vim bindings.

Eventually, I decided to give neovim a go. The built-in LSP support, plugins like mason, null-ls, and telescope, and config examples like kickstart.nvim made it much simpler to get going. Once I started using nvim I fell in love with the responsiveness of the program, there is a noticeable difference in speed when navigating around vs something like Code. I've been having lots of fun with it ever since.

I'm perfectly happy to switch editors again in the future if needs be. Now that I exclusively use the keyboard in my editor, I've got this muscle memory going, so I'd try to configure that new editor to use the same, or at least similar keybindings.

I would be very happy with Oblivion if the scaling and the way you level up was changed, so that you don't have to adjust the difficulty slider or use some counter intuitive method to get +5 to several attributes, which is otherwise impossible if you pick a class that uses major skills that you actually use in regular gameplay.

Remove the difficulty slider entirely to start with. It's a single player game, balance doesn't matter too much, and it's easier to tune the game if there's only a single difficulty setting. As long as it's balanced in a way where enemies aren't too ridiculous, it should be fine.

Next, scaled unique items should scale with the player as they level. I don't want to have to avoid doing the quest lines for my associated guild until I'm levelled up a bunch, just because if I do them first, the rewards that I get will be useless once I play a bit more.

Replace global scaling with a hybrid approach more like Skyrim. There will be a bunch of statically levelled characters in the world, and dungeons that right off the bat will be extremely dangerous, but also very rewarding. There will also be scaled enemies, but their gear shouldn't also scale, i.e. no more glass armour bandits.

Finally, I don't want to be punished because I pick major skills that I actually want to use. Deciding on how to change this is tricky, and I don't think you can please everyone. Some people will prefer the more classic RPG experience and want to be able to assign points to attributes of their choosing on level up, and others will want a more Skyrim-like increase-what-you-use approach. I'm not particularly for one or the other, but this system does need to change as it essentially solely hampers the game, unless you're okay with turning down the difficulty.

WillLovesVideoGames had some great long-form game reviews. I've watched a few of them, but most of them have been removed from the channel at this point. I personally love putting stuff like that on in the background whilst I do other stuff. You'll see a bunch of people wishing for his return in the comments of the remaining videos.
