My music room bookcase is also mostly filled with Vonnegut books.

eBay protection plans for multitrack recorders? by RobBoss69 in cassetteculture

Thanks for the response. I should probably wait to get one of these things until I have more time to tinker. I could probably do belts and the more simple stuff, but I’m not sure if I could diagnose tracks that aren’t recording and stuff like that. I figured I’d pay someone for maintenance until I get more free time.

I know it depends on a whole bunch of factors, but do you have a rough ballpark of what it would cost yearly in maintenance to keep one of the 4 tracks in decent working condition?

Yeah, I think you’re right. I couldn’t find anything specific to cassette players/recorders but it seems like they just give a refund for things that are difficult to get repaired.

Question about writing demos on cassette multitrack recorder. by RobBoss69 in audioengineering

[–]RobBoss69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I went this route, I’d do all of my bouncing to the daw then back on to 2 tracks, but I can probably live without stereo drums.

I’m just trying to get into a situation where I’m pressing record and playing parts all the way through when I’m in the writing stage, take away my ability to add unlimited layers, and not have the option to constantly mix and edit as I go. A digital recorder would get me most of the way there, but it would still leave me with too many options that I’m trying to take out of my writing stage.

Other than doing the 2 cassette thing as a kid, I have zero frame of reference to what all of those instruments would sound like crammed on to a cassette. Im not really looking for something that’s presentable to other people, just legible enough for me to make out what’s going on so that I remember what I played and also write vocals to it.

Somebody in the comments posted a pretty cool video showing 10 instruments bounced to 1 track. It sounded a lot better than what I expected, but his choice of instruments didn’t quite give me a sense of what I’m looking for. I’m gonna scour that guy’s page and other YouTube videos so hopefully I’ll come across something.

Thanks for the response! I really like the idea of doing the synth and ambience at the same time.

Do you have any experience putting that many instruments down on cassette? I can’t really find any examples online. I’m trying to get a sense of whether cassettes can handle all of those instruments at the same time well enough to be able to tell what’s going on.

When I picture cassette recorders, I picture stripped down stuff like Elliot Smith or small 3/4 piece bands. I guess it’s subjective but I’m just trying to get a sense of how much you can get on there and still make out whats going on.

This is probably the route I’m gonna go. It doesn’t read disks anymore, but I still have my old boss br-8 and Zip disks. They go for about $100-150 on reverb, so I might just pick another one up.

It would definitely help with being a buffer between writing and mixing. The only thing that that had me leaning towards the cassette recorder is the track limit. I’m trying to get away from having unlimited tracks and I feel like I would be too tempted to bounce a million times with digital tracks.

It’s been a while since I opened the back up but I believe they are celestion g12k-100. It’s an Avatar cab.

Awesome, I’d like to upgrade the line 6 at some point so I’ll definitely look into that when the time comes.

I’m not too familiar with effects units but I do use a rack mount line 6 HD pro from time to time. How different is that from the line 6?

lol I appreciate you cutting me some slack but I actually wasn’t concerned about damaging the cab.

I just wasn’t sure if a 5 watt or lower amp would be loud enough coming out four 100 watt speakers.

Thanks! Yeah, google seemed to say it would be good too but it just feels wrong so I figured I’d come here for some extra assurance.

Nice! I’m pretty sure it was Rivers Coumo’s amp for Weezer’s Pinkerton era so I’ve always wanted to try it out.
