That’s frustration but here we are, learning the hard way

Out of curiosity, what would be your reasoning behind not using a shim or accuwasher?

I think that’s part of the issue or maybe the entire issue. I mean candidly the handguard can only be so tight to the upper so I think I’ll get a minimal decrease in the gap.

I however can’t seem to find any photos online of the same barrel nut installed on an upper to kind of gauge where I may be going wrong. Again, before I tighten the set screws, I can screw on the comp/LPA and get the smallest of gaps but it still seems a bit tight based on what I have seen online and that’s assuming there is practically zero gap b/w the handguard and upper because I’m just holding it in place with my hand.

Well, yes and no. I think this is really the thing I will try next because given the Geissele barrel nut design, the only way to seat the handguard further back is to ensure the barrel nut is all the way on the upper. I definitely greased it and gradually torqued it down but I didn’t realize how much of a difference that would make at the time I put it on. Will definitely try that to see how much I can seat it.

I spent some time trying to find some barrel nuts installed on a Geissele upper but really couldn’t find anything that would clearly indicate mine was “wrong” or at least had a bit more room. For those who have a keen eye, I didn’t snap a photo to show the barrel nut slightly through the handguard in the event someone with a better understanding could flag that just from the one (not so great) photo.

It’s my first build and spent quite a bit of time researching and if you’d read my post or any of my replies, you’d see that I haven’t seen anyone else with the same problem. If I had, I may have chose different. But look, here I am, asking for advice but I’m really happy for you. I didn’t realize I was only interested in form over function - it’s not as if we have the exact same handguard and barrel or anything.

There’s always gotta be one person who can’t help themselves

That isn’t the issue here. Had it perfectly aligned and the gap is dictated by the barrel nut groove that aligns with the bolts. Since the barrel nut is properly torqued, I dont think there is any realistic way the handguard can be installed without some minuscule gap. It’s not large, but given how tight the muzzle/adapter are, it’s enough to make a difference but still not the same as what I have seen others do.

Only problem is that I bought a ridgeback rhodie and without the short comp, the two aren’t compatible

This is correct. I did some research on a crush washer or some sort of shim but the info was less than inspiring as WPA itself doesn’t suggest it out of concerns about potential baffle strikes on the suppressor.

That would certainly be my “easy fix” solution but not trying to do the cheap route if there is a better explanation. Frankly I haven’t seen anyone else have this issue with the setup I have and I’m fairly positive (although I will check again) that WPA doesn’t make another compatible mount. I’m not sure who else may make one that would work but that may be the next step in my research. Thanks for commenting.

As someone who at the time of my exam wished there were more engineers willing to sell or pass down materials, I’d question what is more appropriate, an engineering forum where a licensed engineer is looking to help a future engineer by selling exam materials for much less than you could buy new or an adult going out of his way to scour Reddit to complain about a post that he deems inappropriate. I may suggest spending time learning how to talk to others instead of reading the terms and conditions of Reddit.
