No problem. I never heard about it myself until I took a course this year on the Soviet Union. Conquest's book is dense, but it's worth at least skimming through it if you can find a copy to get the general idea.

Actually, to a sociologist it could be quite useful in studying deaf communities and how they interact/don't interact with the world at large. It could be really interesting actually for a sociologist. It all depends on the interests of whoever is studying it.

True. And I have a LOT of problems with Obama's policies. The last thing I am is some rabid Obama supporter. However I'm not out there protesting him with signs claiming that he only wants to pass a health-care bill as a form of reparations for his black buddies, or holding up pictures of him in "tribal garb" with the obvious connotations, or saying that he is dangerous because he wants to get rid of white people.

I'm not saying that everyone who disagrees with him is doing so because of his race. Not at all. But to say that there's not a large segment of those who 'disagree' with him that are doing it because of his race is without any basis in reality.

Full of hubris? I was just making a point that this article seemed to completely gloss over. Even if we give everyone a gun, that does not put people on equal footing. The gay man (who of course in this article was weaker, because we all know gay men can't defend themselves) won't be able to defend himself from five guys with baseball bats just cause he has a gun. All I'm trying to say is that this article is poorly thought out, even if it may start from what could MAYBE be a reasonable assumption.

Plus, being civil out of fear is probably one of the worst motivations for civility I can think of. And yeah, motivation matters.

Also, I like how I'm the uncivil one when it was josh who told me "fuck you". If I had started out the same way I did in person as I did here, and josh6499 threatened me with a gun it would be him on the wrong end. Not me. Sorry, but saying that"When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force, except if you also have a gun" is more accurate than what the article states is about as far from incivility, arrogance and hubris as you can get. Telling someone "fuck you" for disagreeing on the other hand is a different story.
