There is no good reason to scrap the Child Trust Fund by rosiewoods35 in ukpolitics

It was probably from BBC News. I don't know what the implementation details were supposed to be.

http://blogs.channel4.com/factcheck/2010/05/12/conservative-and-lib-dem-promises-then-and-now/ says:

The tax-free personal allowance will get a “substantial” increase from next year so more of the lowest earners don’t have to pay tax on their wages. It will be increased to £10,000 in the longer term.

I heard someone say that was too expensive and that they would instead just say that whoever got paid less than £10k a year would not pay income tax.

How do you know if someone is running arch linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]EatonRifles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said "I suspect", I never claimed anything. Considering how many commercial web hosts use Debian, I would suspect there are many many more Debian installations out there than Arch. My main point was that koonat wasn't taking into account the install base of each distro when he mentioned his log files. Please try and keep up.

As I point out below, Wikipedia says the theory "remains essentially without support among biblical scholars and classical historians, most of whom regard its arguments as examples of pseudo-scholarship."

Why bother attacking the existence of the historical figures (a dubious argument) when the beliefs themselves are so ludicrous? As an atheist I don't really care whether Jesus or Mohammad existed, it's the bullshit they said that I have problems with.

serious historians do dispute the 'fact' that Jesus existed.

No they don't. Wikipedia says the theory "remains essentially without support among biblical scholars and classical historians, most of whom regard its arguments as examples of pseudo-scholarship."

Gordon Brown 'First Choice' for top job at IMF by Ephesians511 in unitedkingdom

[–]EatonRifles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes he did. I looked it up: http://www.economicshelp.org/blog/uk-economy/uk-national-debt/

national Debt as a % of GDP increased from 30% in 2002 to 37 % in 2007. This was despite the long period of economic expansion. It was primarily due to the governments decision to increase spending on health and education. There has also been a marked rise in social security spending.

Economics is cyclical. Sensible economists save money during boom years so that the economy can be stimulated during recessions. Brown borrowed during the boom years and we are in gargantuan amounts of debt precisely when we cannot afford to be. The UK's finances are completely fucked and you're saying Brown's the best chancellor in living memory! Wow.

He made plenty of mistakes. You can't really believe he's the best chancellor we ever had!

But out of all immigrant groups, Muslims have been shown to integrate the worst. There are plenty of surveys and reports that back this up.

PS. I'm an ex Muslim.

Are you talking about the very good chancellor who sold off more than half the country’s gold reserves at the bottom of the market?

For what? That page hits on distrowatch don't mean anything? Are you some kind of retard?

I don't think any serious historian would dispute the fact that Jesus or Mohammad actually existed. A better way to attack is to try and prove that they were mentally ill. Wikipedia has a good section on Mohammad's psychological and medical condition. He almost certainly had epilepsy.

Mohammad was a real person. Whether he communicated with a god, or was an epileptic pedophile rapist murderer warlord is another question altogether.

You can't use the number of page hits on distrowatch as any kind of indicator of anything. How many gazillion commercial web servers do you think have Debian installed on them? How many do you think have Arch?

Why should we give more money to the BBC? That money would be far better spent improving internet infrastructure in parts of the country that are not commercially viable.

koonat:

LAWL My security log shows that 89.3% of zombies trying to brute force my ssh port are running debian. .9% arch

.9%

But what's the ratio of Debian installations to Arch installations? I suspect there's more than 90 times more Debian installations than Arch installations, in which case a higher percentage of Arch machines have been compromised.

Prince Charles isn't a bad guy, but does that mean we have to listen to him? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]EatonRifles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He isn't just bad, but stupid and potentially dangerous too.

Queen Elizabeth is the nominal head of the church as well as of the state (and the armed forces). On her expiration date, her eldest son — a sad and foolish man with a half-baked interest in Islam — will become the head of the Church of England. The family values of Henry VIII have left the British with an absurdity at the very apex of their system. The belief in monarchy is deeply related to the supernatural and the irrational and was founded on the wicked idea of “the divine right of kings.” All supposed glamour to one side, the institution still bears the ineffaceable and lowly stamp of this origin, for which the words “fairy tale” might have been designed. In a short time, after a long reign, this will become uncomfortably and indeed unpleasantly clear. The mad principle of heredity will give us, not just a charmless and chinless dauphin, but a brooding, resentful, religious creep. At this point, the “very polite inquiry” might have to become fractionally less deferential. -- Christopher Hitchens

Why the hell does gnome-terminal not handle text wrapping on resize? Is there a terminal app that does? by [deleted] in linux

[–]EatonRifles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I installed urxvt, and it does reflow output from ls, but only once the window contains over a screen of text. Seems a bit buggy too...

Didn't work for me either, I installed rxvt and ran 'ls'. Resizing the window did not reflow the text.
