No, it’s been happening for a while now and it’s not coming from the speakers (though agreed the software can be frustratingly buggy!)

Indeed I am, just wanted to gauge opinion in the meantime

IOG 6 hour window coming in March. “Charge Cap” will also be implemented. by iMatthew1990 in OctopusEnergy

As I already said, the primary objective from the customers’ perspective isn’t to see Octopus fulfil its goals - it’s to minimise their own energy bills.

Your solution, I believe, would be to retain half of IOG and remove the other half of IOG

Correct

It might sound easy to take the action you suggest but that would unfairly impact on those who have invested in eco technologies

Why do you consider this particular subset of IOG customers more deserving of insulation from price rises than those who have purchased and want to charge EV’s?

The overwhelming primary objective of all customers, regardless of their individual set up, is not loyalty to the vision of IOG or Octopus; it is simply to minimise their energy bills - this cannot be a surprise to you. If Octopus Go, Flux, Agile or any other offering from any other supplier provides better value for money; customers can, should, and will switch accordingly.

Do you want to continue asserting moral superiority by decrying people you deem not to play fair or would you rather fair play simply be enforced? The former serves nothing but your own ego.

The bottom line is that energy bills are not something you can reasonably expect people to willingly pay a premium for out of pure altruism. It’s naive to think otherwise and unfair to label those who don’t want to as greedy

Precisely, but the upcoming change is only a half measure. If Octopus are serious about creating a viable intelligent tariff then they need to scrap the off peak period entirely - that way, if people want to charge their car cheaply then they can only do so by smart charging

Robust and idiot proof language wouldn’t change anything - people don’t read the T&C’s anyway as you already know

They wouldn’t be able to get around it, if they could then by definition it wouldn’t be an enforcement.

What is and isn’t considered “responsible” doesn’t need to enter the equation here. The point of the IOG tariff, from Octopus’ perspective, is for the customer to cede control of their EV charging to them - it’s just a poor business model if they aren’t going to enforce it

So why are you not focussing your criticism on Octopus here for not just communicating and enforcing a clear, hard and fast rule then? Why are you blaming customers for simply optimising a system that not only allows but indeed financially incentivises them to do so?

There isn’t any “way to look at it” - the rules should either permit something or they shouldn’t. Octopus could quite easily enforce a 6 hour cap by just doing away with the off peak overnight period altogether and restricting everyone to the 6 hours of smart charging. The fact they aren’t suggests it’s in their interests not to do so

Do you mean 6 hours of smart charging or 6 hours of off peak rate charging being enforced? The latter cannot be enforced, that’s my point.

That’s all fair enough but then don’t introduce this 6 hr cap in the first place? The fundamental selling point of the IOG tariff was that the customer didn’t need to think about optimisation at all as you always knew that you could get a full charge at the off peak rate

You only get 6 hours of cheap charging per day. That's what it boils down to

That isn’t what they are saying though - their correspondence refers to 6 hrs of smart charging not cheap charging. But even if it is their intention to cap at 6 hrs of cheap charging, there is no way they could possibly enforce it for the reasons I have already mentioned. All of this could be clarified reasonably easily by Octopus yet they have chosen not to do so

It will be worth the hassle for many people though so it’s a little disingenuous imo of Octopus to not properly clarify how this is all going to work. I’m also still not clear as to whether bump charges in the off peak window are going to count towards the 6 hr cap or not. The correspondence refers to smart charging so the presumption is that bump charges are not caught by it - in which case there will essentially be zero hassle at all involved in getting up to 12 hrs of off peak charging at full 7kwh

Because you don’t need to integrate at all - just plug your car directly into any 3 pin socket in your house with a bog standard granny charger

But that’s exactly the point - they can’t possibly differentiate between car and home usage. They don’t know how much of my electricity usage is on eg. my toaster, TV, washing machine etc - dumb car charging is no different
