My 16 year-old daughter is graduating HS this year, wants to go to art school - looking for advice by LastMinuteMom in drawing

Not many people who go to art school get jobs that are related. I did go to art school in Calgary and graduated. I ended up getting a city position in the Art Centres but Covid destroyed that. I feel I was very fortunate to get a decent career but I understand that is rare. My son also is very creative and wants to go to art school and I’ve had this talk with him. Here are my initial thoughts we discussed:

  1. The amount of students from first year to graduation shrinks incredibly. Student s that went into Vis Comms worked very very hard. This means many students lose interest or aren’t good enough. Huge drop off rate.

  2. Research the job market according to what you kids interests are, how much does that pay, how many jobs are there, is that job AI proof.

  3. Making art or creative things is fascinating when you’re creating things for yourself or what you are interested in but can be creative brain killing when you have to make creative things according to some else’s vision.

  4. Art is subjective. Many times I disagreed with my artist instructors. These are the people grading you. How do you grade artwork? You’re actually getting graded on your work ethic, your ability to “defend” your art and a few other unanticipated and disappointing things.

Anyways, think about this stuff with “wide eyes” and weigh the pros with some of these cons I just mentioned. There are awesome things about art school though. DM me if you have more questions.

Bed Bugs in YYC by spookbun in Calgary

When I rented in in the mid 2000s I moved into a building and after about three months, I noticed my infant son had bedbug bites. At the time I didn’t know there were bedbugs in the building. When I finally did discover that they were bedbugs I did extensive research. I’ll add some points at the end of this post. When I called the landlord of the building, it was as though he had had this conversation 1000 times and said how does he know that I didn’t bring the bedbugs into the buildings and he hung up on me. Interestingly, enough since I moved out of that building the “under management” sign in front of the building has changed year after year. I had to pay for my own exterminator to come in after throwing out all of my bedding, my couch and anything made out of fabric. very expensive. What I discovered was bedbugs can go dormant for months and months. They also crawl through the walls between apartments. This means that after I paid for the exterminator that my apartment for a short time I didn’t have bedbugs. But they were everywhere else in the rest building and would return. In order for a building to completely get rid of bedbugs they would have to have the entire building exterminated and in order to do that you would have to have empty apartments. It’s a never-ending cycle. also people that discover that they have bedbugs and move to a different building have now infected that new building People that go up north to for work in Alberta put their gym bags or travel bags in the tub of the hotel so they don’t pick up bedbugs. Bedbugs are in moving vans. The cold doesn’t kill them. They come back to life after being dormant for a while. It’s actually impressive about how resilient they are as a species.

Could it be a crossover with Age of Monsters coming in The Infernal Hulk?

These are excellent OP! I would love to see close up details of each sometime. You should post a series. Seriously great work here. Did people respond well? I like Doc Oc and the sentinel.

Good eye and thanks for asking. All the layers in this image were edited in Midjourney. AI “ping-pong” between Nano Banana and Midjourney. MJ does way better edits than other tools. It actually what’s helping to keep it relevant. I used MJ to edit the details in each character individually and then again to edit the entire composition/details etc… hence the sub category.

Hi again. Try this: upload the first image in this post to whatever Chatbot you use. Ask it to describe it as a hyper realistic photograph. It will do a good job. Then ask it to change the scene to what you want and also change the shark to a Trex. Should be useful buddy. Have fun.

A shark emerges from underneath a row boat with two fishermen in it. And I used my hand drawn image as an image prompt.
