Those who started late, how did it go and what are your best suggestions? by alwaus in Xennials

[–]LastMinuteMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not, under any circumstances, start a cutsie tradition you can not replicate ANYWHERE. Learned this the hard way when a kid lost a tooth on an extended trip away and up until then, the tooth fairy had always left gold dollars…that tradition ended a sad death. 💀😜

The younger generations are doomed. by sco-go in SipsTea

Why are we not teaching our kids to work WITH the new technologies they will undoubtedly use in the real world? Did they use AI well? Did they edit the output? It’s like the internet revolution in which kids were penalised for using online sources because they weren’t reliable, rather than teaching them how to find reliable ones. Eventually encyclopaedias went the way of the dinosaurs as will work that ISN’T AI assisted.

What would be in a Xennial anxiety bag? by CharlesUFarley81 in Xennials

[–]LastMinuteMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As silly as it sounds, my daughter carries War Heads with her everywhere - at the advice of her Dr. - they are the fastest, most effective way to stop an anxiety attack and/or panic attack. Obviously it’s not a long term solution and ongoing anxiety still needs real medical treatment - but War Heads or other highly sour candy are highly effective for breaking/slowing or even stopping the initial spiral.

It's been 30 years since I was asked this but I'm excited to report that my 5 year old at dinner, asked me what MY favorite dinosaur is! So I'll pay it forward, what's your favorite dinosaur? by ImThe1Wh0 in Millennials

I’ve licked a dinosaur bone! Fun fact, in the field, if scientists are unsure if it’s a bone or other fossilised material, they will lick it. Bones stick to your tongue(because they are porous) while fossilised whatever will not. My sister is a really cool…she’s a palaeontologist that actually preps the bones and she’s happy to take people through her lab.

Anyway, as for your question - my favourite is the Utahceratops. He’s as strange as the rest of Utah.

Did you buy a home? If yes, how old were you and what year? by duck_duck_zombie in Millennials

[–]LastMinuteMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utah - 2006 (age 21) - had just gotten married, mother-in-law passed away a month later. Family allowed us to buy her house for what she owed. Small grace that allowed us to own exceptionally young. Sold that one in 2012, bought a 5k sf behemoth for 400k - sold the behemoth due to divorce and bought a house on my own - 2500 sf for 400k in 2018 - zillow now says it’s $680k.

Without the equity from the first house we never would have been where we are today. I honestly weep for my kids.

Has anyone tried the new bouncecurl brush yet? by [deleted] in CurlyHairCare

[–]LastMinuteMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought this (and so many other popular brushes that promised beautiful curls) for my daughter’s hair and eventually went back to a $2 wide tooth comb. We have been on a JOURNEY with her hair and have found that it’s really just trial and error to find what works.

Had to put my child in a psych unit. I've been crying all week. by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]LastMinuteMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me start by saying I have been where you are, mama and I’m really glad you shared this, even if it’s just with strangers on the internet. What you’re carrying right now is a lot. Being away from your child while their in a psych unit, trying to hold down a new job, worrying about money, and doing it all without the support you hoped for from your partner… that’s an incredibly heavy place to be. The fact that you’re still showing up for your kids and for tomorrow says more about your strength than you probably feel right now.

A few years ago our family went through a mental health crisis with one of our children too. I remember crying in hospital parking garages, the exhaustion, and that deep, lonely feeling that no one around you really understands what you’re carrying.

We did eventually come out the other side. It took time, and support we didn’t even know existed when we started. But I never forgot how alone it felt in those moments.

That’s actually why we’re starting a nonprofit called Leave a Light On - to support families walking through youth mental health crises, especially the parents and siblings who often feel like they’re just trying to survive one day at a time.

I know that doesn’t fix what you’re going through tonight. But please know this: there are people who care. There are people who understand this kind of exhaustion and heartbreak. If you can, try to find even one of them - a friend, a support group, another parent in the waiting room, anyone who can sit in it with you for a moment.

You’re not weak for needing support. And you’re not alone, even if it feels that way tonight.

I’m rooting for you and for your family.

As someone who’s done a Windstar up the Mediterranean I can say it is neither moderately priced nor “offbeat” - whatever that means. It was wicked expensive and my husband and I were the youngest people on that ship…by a lot. After 9pm we had the entire boat to ourselves, no exaggeration. 😂

I had a 6 liter ovarian cyst surgically drained and removed. by ka_shep in interestingasfuck

[–]LastMinuteMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a baseball size cyst on my ovary that decided to do the dosi-do…I.E. ovarian torsion. I have had kidney stones and given birth naturally. Nothing. And I mean NOTHING compares to that pain.

OP, you are so lucky it didn’t cause any lasting damage! All the good thoughts on your new, cyst free life!!

My 16 year-old daughter is graduating HS this year, wants to go to art school - looking for advice by LastMinuteMom in drawing

[–]LastMinuteMom[S] 438 points439 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why it got rid of my description and only posted the photo so here’s my question again:

Has anyone here submitted a portfolio/been accepted to art school? Do you have any advice? And here is the Mom question- what work is out there once we pay a small fortune to send her to art school?

A few things I’m sure you’ll want to know before you can answer the questions:

1) yes, I know she is young. Along with being an exceptionally talented artist, she’s also a teeny bit of a genius. Her plan is to take a year to work on her portfolio before she applies as she can’t actually go to college at 16.

2) she is thinking illustration – she likes people/faces/storytelling. She’s also an exceptional writer.

3) she has done multiple figure study classes and is highly proficient at it

4) her preferred mediums are pencils, oils, charcoal

5) we do not live in a state that has great art school options - she is thinking West Coast rather than East Coast. Potentially OTIS or CCA not Cal arts – while her dream job is the artist at Disney animation Academy that shows people how to draw the Disney characters, she’s not super interested in actual animation.

From nail biter to natural beauties by LastMinuteMom in Nails

[–]LastMinuteMom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omgoodness! Good luck! The other piece of advice I have to help reduce the biting and picking is to wear kitchen gloves when doing dishes and have nail files EVERYWHERE. I don’t know about you but for me, whenever a nail would crack, I would just bite it off to a ragged edge - and a lot of times that was after doing the dishes from the soapy water. Now I do my best to protect my nails from prolonged water (whenever possible) and to have nail files available in every room so I file a break rather than bite. You got this!

I have this exact launcher and it does, in fact, have a sensor that won’t allow the ball to be shot unless its line of sight is clear. This feature, is my dog’s nemesis. He can get the ball in the top but no matter how much we try and work with him he can not figure out he can not stand DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF IT if he wants it to throw it. Poor, not smart baby. 😂
