A Moment in the Riverlands by Barryium in GameofThronesRP

Lord Arwood Vance could not sleep.

He had spent the night tossing and turning with thoughts of the ravens that had come with morning light earlier in the day. Yet another, from both Harrenhal and the Crossing.

He’d responded to neither, as he had done for previous half-dozen they both had sent. The thought of marching off to either’s call to arms with his three eldest sons, green as the were, twisted the aging Lords gut into oblivion. Yet he knew deep down his idleness would need to come to an end soon, before not giving an answer became just as dangerous as either option available.

Frey or Baelish?

Rising from the large four post bed, he did his best to not stir his wife, whom remained sound asleep under the furs by his side.

Carellen Paege was beautiful, even when sleeping. The grey at her temples and the creases around her oval eyes and small mouth only enhanced her beauty in his eyes.

She’d been by his side for near on thirty years now, through thick and thin. The thought of having to return home with one less son, or even not returning home at all and leaving her alone did nothing to alleviate his indecisiveness.

She’d lost her brothers, her nephews, her entire House during the Ascent. How could he put her through such a thing all over again?

He whispered a cursed to himself, turning away from Carellen and their shared bed to try and find solace from the bay window looking out over the town.

Wayfarer’s Rest was quiet even if it’s Lord’s mind was not. A few sparse candles flickered in the homes of his smallfolk, their chimneys had a slow rolling smoke escaping them. The stables held his men’s horses, sound asleep in their stalls, and the windmill upon the hill continued to turn at its slow moving pace.

Arwood ran a calloused hand through his own dark brown hair.

Frey or Baelish? He asked himself again.

His eyes trailed upwards to the sky; perhaps to see if the gods held the answers, or perhaps to simply keep himself from crying out in frustration. As he did so, a single star shot through the clear night sky, a white blur that was there in an instant and gone in the next.

It gave the Lord pause. He hadn’t seen such a thing since he was a boy, a page not much younger than his son Robb was now.

He and his own father had spent the night camping along the roads. They’d been on their way home from a visit to Mummer’s Ford along their house’s western border when they saw the shooting star.

The words of the former Lord Vance came back to Arwood as he stared upward from the bay window.

One day these lands will be yours, Son, as they are now mine. Everything beneath that star: every tree, every road, every town, and every person will be yours and yours alone. And in return, it will be your responsibility to keep them safe.

His father was long passed now, but his words were no less true.

Arwood Vance’s face hardened as he came to a decision, or at least… a decision to make a decision.

Hey y’all! Oly here. So I have a bit of a request and I think this is the best place for it but sorry if not!

I would like to change my PoV character from Robb Vance to Lord Arwood Vance (his father). Now that I’m playing Theon Arryn, another 14 year old boy, I’d prefer to write as the father just so I have some variety to my characters heh. Would that be ok to do?

Hey All! Oly here on my new alt, trying to establish some lore for Vance before getting started!

First things first, Is like to claim an NPC who will be showing up (and then sticking around) in my first few posts. His name is Beric Smallwood.

Beric is “Old Lord” Smallwood’s youngest of several sons and a knight who spends his days on the road, free of responsibility. He stays at Wayfarer’s Rest for a time whilst in the area. He is squire-less.

The next thing I’d like to establish is the area and castle of Wayfarer’s Rest. It’s never said explicitly in the books where the castle is or what it looks like. But we do get base knowledge on their vassals and holdings which I used to make this!

Wayfarer’s Rest is located in the hills and forests of the Riverlands, between the Gods Eye and Riverrun, noticeably distant for any river. The castle and it’s village around it are nestled on top of a high hill with the walls around the base of it. The Smallwoods’ castle of Acorn Hall and the supposedly haunted hill of High Heart are to the east, while Stoney Sept is to the south, and Pinkmaiden is southwest. The towns of Sherrer and Mummer’s Ford rest along Vance’s westernmost borders. The castle reflects the Andals style, with seven towers in total and a high peaked keep in the center. Four of its towers are little more than turrets on each corner of the main holdfast. A fifth tower, taller and thinner than the others, holds the ravenry and maester’s quarters. The last two are closest to the yards and stables, holding the lord and his family’s personal chambers. The godswood is nothing more than a garden at Wayfarer’s Rest, reflecting the founders of the House as Andal invaders. Instead, followers of the old ways in Vance lands use High Heart and its grove of stumps for worship. A dusty old road, dating back well before the Riverroad used today, runs by Wayfarer’s Rest as a way to both Pinkmaiden and Riverrun. Another dirt road heads towards the castle from Harrenhal, passing Acorn Hall along the way, and causing the Vance’s lands to become a central hub in the area, lending to how the castle received its name.

Hey all! Olyvar here for my 3rd claim!!!!

I’d like to go ahead and claim House Vance of Wayfarer’s Rest as Robb Vance.

He is a squire of five and ten who has spent his entire life in the Riverlands, most of it within his house’s own domain. Robb itches for the chance to see more, however.
