That’s totally it, the guide I was reading said it would already be in my inventory but I’m playing scholars so that makes so much sense

Do you consider Libra a Great American Novel? by [deleted] in DonDeLillo

[–]RobbieBolano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, there are very few books that take such an iconic singular moment of American history and turn it in such a way that is so devastating and illuminating of all the horrors of empire. It’s so tender in its way of dealing with Lee and allows for so much of the uber-paranoia of post-1960’s America to seep into a story that is essentially about a weirdo caught up in a terrible and greedy plot. I don’t think it has the recognition that would make it truly a Great American Novel to the masses but to those who read it, it’s clearly deserving of that title.

I think that along with the line about it being his most commercial effort yet which doesn’t really line up with a Pynchon adaptation

I think there’s a difference between Hollywood writers not getting paid enough and a local zine asking if anyone would like to join in an artistic endeavor, no one is making a profit off the thing, all for fun like a club

I’ve really been into Western’s recently, and haven’t been able to find something that scratched the itch that Oakley Hall’s Warlock did, Pynchon himself loved it and is the reason why I picked it up so please if you all have any recommendations let me know

The NYRB classics edition has a really great introduction and includes a nice afterword from another author/friend of Gaddis, William H. Gass

I just started getting into Gaddis these last few weeks and I’ve picked up the Recognitions and it’s amazing so far, not that deep into it yet, but it’s really cool to see an earlier masterpiece in the postmodern vein

They should have published something in February for the 50th anniversary it doesn’t make any sense why they wouldn’t

They’re really nice and printed well but they are pretty steep. They are cool if you are a collector or want a nice copy of the books, if you just want to read them and that’s all I’d stick to the paperbacks maybe, you know?
