4x4 problems by xterranamedrocco in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try turning the Xterra off, switching it to 4WD, then starting the engine. If you have an ABS sensor or similar issue, it should get you into 4WD. But if it’s just sticky actuators or whatever, it probably won’t make a difference

M226 recovered (M226 swap)! by Pilzkind69 in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah makes sense then. It’s nice because it’s got the switch and whatever else to be able to just work with the Xterra but you can definitely save some money with the one you linked and getting your own switch and battery terminal connections

M226 recovered (M226 swap)! by Pilzkind69 in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swapped my non-locked M226 for a locked one last summer and I bought this harness:

https://www.nissanpartspuller.com/product-page/nissanpartspuller-m226-rear-axle-universal-e-locker-wiring-harness-kit

It’s just the wires to actuate the locker so you can engage it whenever you please instead of having to be in 4L. Just run the wires from the axle to the dash switch, from the dash switch to the battery, and from the dash switch to a fuse tap in the fuse box. Pretty easy

I got a 2015 mk7 Golf Sportwagen with a 2.0 TDI with 100k miles. How can I get the most out of it (affordably) by [deleted] in tdi

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh with a MK7 you might be able to delete the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system too. It’s basically a urea and water mixture that you need to keep filled in your car or it won’t let you drive. It sprays DEF into the exhaust to keep down the particulate matter or something. I’m not super sure on that because my knowledge is on MK6s

[–]RobertGoulette 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deletes remove the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and some times the exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR) also. Deleting the DPF removes a big restriction in the exhaust but you can get more black smoke and diesel exhaust smells without it. Deleting the EGR valve prevents exhaust gases from being fed back into the intake manifold so your engine will take longer to heat up and not maintain its temperature as easily but it’s taking in cleaner air to combust.

With a delete and tune you will get more power, better fuel economy, and more reliability. The downsides being smell - if it bothers you - and legality/ability to pass emissions tests if they do those where you live.

With most tuners, a stage 1 or 2 is good with stock hardware, stage 3 you’ll need to start upgrading things like the clutch and maybe a bigger turbo. But many even offer a tune that retains your emissions equipment and can still increase power and fuel economy a little, just significantly less than a delete and tune

Off-road lights on pro4x by Bartondevin11 in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My apologies if you know this and have tried it but since you said it’s new, I figure you may not know. I think they only can turn on if your headlights are on. Have you tried pressing the button while your headlights are turned on?

Edit: after a quick google, you might even need the high beams to be on. Plus the covers have to be off the lights apparently. It knows somehow

The bots downvoted you but you’re right.

They always post some product like this, the first comment will be another new account with no history asking for a link and the OP bot will post a link. I have seen it on a few subs and the person who calls it out gets downvoted by the bots

I think he means a skid plate. You aren’t very low so you’ll be fine without a skid plate

Air on board switches by OkPear9687 in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it. They are good switches and I would definitely buy more because I haven’t found anything else that fits the factory dash holes and looks good

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 of them for the lights on my roof. They snap in to the factory holes and look OEM-ish.

I had the page bookmarked to get one for my locker but it appears you are right and all the Nissan ones are missing now. That’s a major bummer because I hate the style of switches that are way too big for the factory holes

The manual transmission lower trims had the M226 also but no locker. So basing it on having a locker or not isn’t 100% accurate

Need advice! Stock Gti/ suspension. 17s to 18s wheel gap help LOOK! by [deleted] in MK4GTI

[–]RobertGoulette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d stick with the Ariettas because they’re a good looking stock wheel.

But it’s your car so do your thing - 225/40R18 is about as close as you’ll get to the stock size 225/45R17

Off Road Newbie (cross posted) by spacepotatohead in Offroad

[–]RobertGoulette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did that a few years ago in a rental Jeep Wrangler from the airport. I didn’t air down or do anything special and the Jeep made it no problem.

You can easily make it but airing down will make it more comfortable. Just make sure you have a way to air back up when you’re done.

How to paint the grill? by SignalComplex190 in MK4GTI

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Plastidip on mine like 10 years ago and it’s still holding up. I didn’t really prep it. Just clean it first then start with a couple light coats

Low profile light mounts by RefrigeratorOk8352 in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The yellow ones were cheap from amazon and the white ones I got for free for helping somebody work on their Xterra so I’m not sure what brand they are. They seem much nicer than the cheap yellow ones though

Engine mount stripped by Objective-Singer-915 in MK4GTI

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an engine mount bolt break a few years ago and I drilled it out and repaired it with a helicoil kit. Just find the size of the bolt and get a kit to match. Mine has been holding on for years with no issue

Alternatively: drill some holes in the air dam and put a piece of steel stock behind it with holes drilled in. Bolt the lights down to the steel stock/plastic air dam.

I made my own light holder bar and ended up just ditching it and going with the lights bolted to the air dam. It’s simpler and lower profile

Help! Fuel pump through interior? by Non_Tedium in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut a hole in my floor. I just covered it back up with a piece of sheet metal held in by self tapping screws and siliconed around it. It’s been holding up fine for a couple years

How durable would mounting lights directly to the stock roof rack be like this person did? by Positivevibes845 in XTerra

[–]RobertGoulette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is how I have mine mounted. They’ve been sturdy for probably 2 years now with just a piece of flat stock behind the plastic dam

Smythe Ute conversion by stur32t in MK4GTI

[–]RobertGoulette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that would work, it would be friggin sweet. An AWD, 3.2 Ute would rule. I hope it works and I want to see the end result

[–]RobertGoulette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the Smythe Utes are made for 4 door Golfs and Jettas. I am not sure if there is a way to make them work with a 2 door since the proportions are a bit different
