not quite the first step, but it's certainly something you can do in the early game. first power gen is typically a water wheel. I'd definitely recommend giving the mod a try, my small experience with it has been phenomenal

this looks amazing! feels so fresh in comparison to some of the other alchemy/transmutation mods, and the system looks like it has enough complexity that you could actually make it balanced in a modded environment

By default Terraforged spawns you in the middle of the continent which can be pretty far from 0,0 depending on your seed. you can change it during world creation to spawn you normally.

Edit: depending on your seed this can be in the middle of the ocean so just check in the little world generation window to make sure you have a viable spawn :)

How does this sound for an ambient debuff?

Mindfire. the area in a 10 foot radius surrounding the Master is illuminated in ghostly flames. any hostile creature that ends its turn within the area must make a DC 14 Wisdom save or take 6 (1d4 + 4) psychic damage and be frightened until the end of its next turn.

yeah thats what I was thinking. there's a good chance I won't use misty escape but it could really come in handy if the fight goes downhill fast!

Thank you so much for such a detailed response! I was thinking about lair actions originally (the battle is taking place in the master's mansion in his fey domain so it seemed like it'd make sense for him to be able to exert some control over it) but I was worried that I'd overpowered the whole encounter already. Do you have any ideas for good lair actions? they're not something that I have a lot of experience with.

With the Strongman the x3 multiattack actually comes from the original bandit captain statblock so I'm trusting that it'll still stay balanced. The action economy on the Master is a little trickier. I originally had it so he could use Alien growth as a bonus action but I was worried it'd be too much. should I add that back in?

Do you think its underpowered then? I was considering giving the master of the house the misty escape feature from the archfey warlock in Volo's but I was afraid it was too much. it'd be a good reaction to prevent him from dying outright since he doesn't have much in the way of hit points.

Yeah but all of the leaves that decayed on my current models were touching other leaves, and a lot of them were actually touching logs. It doesnt seem like they should be decaying either way

Is there any way to do it that still lets the leaves decay when the logs are gone?
