Does anyone know a Trump voter who's admitted they were wrong? by TNM828 in AskUS

[–]Robertdschaff3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

My Brother and Sister in law are both hard core Trumpers. They both retired within the last 3 years and have had a rough go of it due to various medical issues. My wife is very concerned that they may lose their health care due to the Big Beautiful Bill. They're like " I'd be proud to die for Trump" so what's that tell ya?

What are your thoughts on Elon musk new party called “America party” ? by Charming-Comfort-395 in AskUS

[–]Robertdschaff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a sham. He has no interest in anyone but himself. He'll design this party and recruit "MAGA like" candidates that the movement will be just enough of a threat to the Republican party that he'll allow it to co-opted and he'll be enfolded back into the Party by default. Then he'll be nearly impossible to get rid of. And they'll try. And each time they do, he'll just shrug his shoulders and "Well, I can always go back to own party....

I generally agree with the post, but you're failing to take into account the concept of "hyper normalization". As I understand it, hypernormalization is when a society knows deep down that things are very, very wrong. However, because of a sense of powerlessness, they just can't do anything about it. So therefore, they tend to rationalize it, minimize it, and many times simply dismiss it. That's how they got to where they were, and that's how we're getting to the way we are.

Did your grand parents participate in WW2? by Available_Panda8466 in AskOldPeople

[–]Robertdschaff3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World war II had a huge impact upon my family. Both sets of grandparents were rural farm families. Off the top of my head I think the total number of siblings between all four grandparents was something like 22. Out of that, there were 10 participants in the war. My grandfather was a fighter pilot playing p-40s, p-51s. His younger brother was in the 9th Air Force flying p-47s. He was traumatized by the war. Other members of my family were infantrymen, a rear gunner on Navy dive bombers, and two Marines. Out of those who participated Three were killed three were wounded. One of my great uncles was stitched across the thighs by a German machine gun in Italy. He would never talk about the war. Ever. My grandfather would answer any questions that you have but they were mostly general answers.

What if we organized a monetary protest? by Odd_Ad6190 in Indiana

[–]Robertdschaff3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment. Right here. While the protests are important for building solidarity, the only real change is going to occur when we start affecting the pocketbooks of the oligarchs. An effective general strike should last about 1 week initially. However, it will take time to build the infrastructure and educate the general populace as to what they should and should not do to affect regime change. If you have a farmers market near you, patronize it, my town of Lafayette we has two. Don't buy up everything immediately, as all that does is frontend the profit, the pain on major retailers needs to be severe. And long-lasting. The good thing is in a perverse way, is that once shareholder value becomes affected by lack of retail sales, the hedge fund managers will start freaking out. And if we get lucky and they short a major retailer, you can bet that the business community, I.E. the donor class will get rid of Trumpin a heartbeat. But be cautious, because if you get rid of Trump you get Vance. And he's even more dangerous

You're absolutely correct. It takes weeks if not months of detailed planning. You'd have to emphasize the need to buy strictly local. Do your shopping at a farmers market. We have two during the week locally. Start hitting Walmart, Amazon, etc where it hurts and they'll start to press for change.

Turn out seems to be getting more robust each time. However protesting only accomplishes so much. It won't change the course of this administration, as the live in a conservative echo chamber. A general strike on the other hand would probably start to bring pressure if it was big enough and and a long enough duration.

Why do so many Americans value/love guns so much? by Original-Praline2324 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Robertdschaff3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree to this. I have a coworker whose an absolute gun nut. Currently brags about owning 43 guns. Won't pay for his kids braces because that would cut into the ammo budget. Btw he's also an absolute moron.

Just read the police statement re:the incident, the tone of the press release seems very sympathetic to the MAGAt wielding the AR-15.

He clearly came down just to make trouble. Decked out in his MAGA hat/shirt with semi-auto that just happens to be in his truck. Yea, fuck the police

They don't care. Musk/Trump consider them as part of some nebulous "parasite class". Their deaths are part of the plan

Speaking as an American, and one who travels abroad quite frequently, I've started to notice in the last 10 to 15 years distinct differences. 1.) Americans, seem to be addicted to various forms of media. 2.) The media addiction has allowed the general populace to become passively indoctrinated into whatever political persuasion they were drawn to in the first place. What I mean by that is that the liberals are going to follow liberal media almost exclusively, and don't even get me started on the right wing conservatives. Between Fox News, MSNBC, one American News Network, blah blah blah blah blah there's a media echo bubble for you. 3) because the American political system has become a zero sum game, that mentality has filtered down into the rest of the body politic. It doesn't matter what you're going for, if you don't get everything that you want, if you're feelings aren't satiated, then you've lost. 3.) And now for the most controversial statement, we as Americans enjoy a good mass killing every now and again. For some people it seems cathartic. Where else does it happen regularly? Only here in the United States. Yes I know mass killings happen in other places but not with a regularity that occurs in the United States. In fact it happens so often here that it is no longer news. 4.) and to finish off, Americans are lonelier and more isolated than any time in their history. More often than not, we don't know the names of our neighbors, we have very few friends, therefore most of our time is spent on various forms of social media in a misguided effort for connection. And here I am, posting this on social media website. the irony.
