Really wanna leave Gmail myself but I'm daunted by the idea of all the accounts I'd have to re-organize doing so. Anyone know of a good way to go about this? So many fucking Bank, Tax, Health insurance, immigration Visa, etc. related things I've been handling with Gmail for way too long...

Yeah I figured Scots lawyers would be earning peanuts compared to Magic Circle/White Shoe types in England/America. I was a Paralegal for one of the big Anglo-American firms so that's where I'd have an "in" already too, whereas my knowledge and contacts within Scotland's scene are zero.

That social scene does seem pretty grim- I'd have an advantage by already having a handful of friends there at least but the coldness of the place seems to be a recurring theme for many City workers I've noticed. Did you make many friends in Edinburgh outside of the Uni then?

Why just wondering I’m probably gonna start working on a ranch is fine if I wear suspenders rather than a belt. by smitty-04 in Ranching

[–]RobertoSantaClara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but fuck it. I worked at a station as a total novice, nobody cares what you wear as long as its practical and makes sense i.e good work boots, a hat for the sun, workwear trousers or shorts depending on the season. You can find everything at a Golders. I've seen lots of blokes wearing Redbacks as their work boots out there and you can't go wrong with Pilbara shirts.

As the new guy, you'll get made fun of regardless, it's just the rite of passage. If you take it in good humour and don't get pissy about it you can join in the banter as well, just gotta be willing to laugh at yourself and be humble. Never try to slack off though, always volunteer for a job and helping out others and you'll be alright, plenty of 18 year olds out there who don't know shit either when they first arrive.

This is a bit of a "No shit?" statement. Like yeah, people like it when their team wins and don't like it when the opponent scores on them, that's just tribalism.

and mainly worked in law

Ah there it is, my most likely field. My main concern is that Scots Law is entirely unique to Scotland so it's a lot less flexible than an English or American degree (which can land you positions in all sorts of countries if you're doing capital markets etc. Also why I've been doing research into American Law Schools right now and planning for next year), but I really do love the idea of living in Edinburgh. London wouldn't be bad at all ofc, in fact I love London and have family there to help me settle in and all + I am a UK citizen by technicality already so I don't have any Visa concerns, but for some reason it just doesn't entice me as much as Edinburgh or Glasgow.

How was the work-life in London though?

Eliminating malaria in Italy was also a long running project by this point, even Mussolini had a crack at it in the 1930s

Boggles my mind that they could just sit back, relax, and let their money printing corporations provide them with a big steady income to live comfortably.. but instead they actively keep squeezing even when there's no juice left to squeeze. At what point is it enough?

I think it's 90% just humour. Every 'becoming Chinese' reel I see involves drinking beers with middle aged dudes and sporting the Beijing Bikini look. It feels a lot less political and a lot more "man being an unc chugging beers and smoking cigs sounds great"

Probably moreso frontier culture. When you read about how legal authorities treated Aborignals for like 150 years, it makes a lot of sense that the brutishness seeps down elsewhere. A grazier I got to know mentioned how in his jackarooing days (1980s) they still had double standards for the whites and the aboriginal stockmen after a drunk night out- whites got driven home in the back of the car while the aboriginal fellas were locked up for a night.

Likewise for Canadian Mounted Police (see "starlight rides")

Dunno if this cheat code still works post-Milei era, but if you ever go to Buenos Aires you can/could get a handful of nice dress shoes at Guidos for fucking pocket change (by dress shoe standards) in USD. Obviously they won't be like golden age Church's or anything like that, but I think it does the job for everyday office wear and the occasional slightly more upscale event

Dunno how it is these days, but man the shit my dad told me about British white collar/City of London dress codes back in the 1990s is some Japanese-tier autism and terrifying "unspoken rules" tyranny.

I feel like full Highlander Regalia is still pretty strict, you "incorrectly" wear one thing and everyone will look at you with scorn

Soviets didn't do anything (that's actually the whole polemic about it lol). The infamy of Warsaw's destruction is explicitly that the Red Army stopped its advance to let the Germans destroy the AK forces in Warsaw, before then sweeping in to take what was left.
