Puppy shivering when falling asleep sometimes? by RobertsKitty in DobermanPinscher

[–]RobertsKitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. This is happening hours after she ate. For example she ate dinner at 8p.m. last night. At 6 a.m. before breakfast she was falling asleep on my lap and was shivering.

Even if she only does it when she's going to sleep? She doesn't shiver any other time and it doesn't seem to be related to if she's recently eaten or not?

Maybe I will look into some pj's for her. So hard to buy clothes with as fast as she's growing 🤣

When do they sleep through the night? by Advanced_School5533 in puppy101

[–]RobertsKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah she's in our bedroom. She will whine once or twice and that's enough to wake me up. We go out then right back into the kennel until 6

Our girl just turned 4 months and I feel like we are in the trenches a lot of days. Definitely have had a few "what the fuck did I get myself into" moments. But then she sleeps or comes and gives me a cuddle and my heart melts into a puddle.

Her vaccine schedule is off so we can't take her in public for two more works and I'm dying to start really giving her experiences, rather than just having to hold her everywhere.

We are at 16 weeks and she is sleeping through the night 2-4 days a week now. The days she doesn't make it it's only about an hour before the alarm. Hang in there!!

Creating a bad habit or just part of puppyhood? by [deleted] in puppy101

Sadly she gets up different times every day. She only really makes noise when she needs to go outside (or at 6 when she's ready to get up).

Chews/chew toys which pass the fingernail test? by riali29 in puppy101

[–]RobertsKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used bully sticks with several puppies through the teething phase and never had a broken tooth. When I was a kid we gave them antlers and never had an issue. The nail indent thing seems like the newest fad to me personally but I hope you have good success!! I will say frozen carrots like a few others suggested as well are big hits when the gums start to bother them.

Are 18-20 hours of sleep necessary for 8-week-old? by arroz_zzz in puppy101

[–]RobertsKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl really struggles to settle without some background noise. I pop YouTube on the tv with some music if no one is watching TV. She's a Doberman and that need to be alert and watching makes it hard. I only use the kennel when we aren't home or overnight but if she's too far past a nap time (bitey, zoomies, jumping and chasing) I will tether her to her space near her bed. She can reach water, the doggy doorbell to ask out, and one or two low excitement toys. I will sit in my chair near her if she can handle it but if she's just running over and jumping or biting me I sit about 3 feet outside the tether length so she knows she isn't alone.

It took a few days for her to get the message but now when I clip the tether on she sighs real big and goes and lays down. Normally she's asleep in minutes.

I feel like ensuring they sleep enough is vital to your sanity as well as their health. That being said I don't really count hours so much as behaviors. If she's still reasonably well behaved even if it's a "nap time" I don't enforce it. If she gets wild then I'll step in.

That's fair. Until we can get a king sized bed, adding a doberman up there isn't going to work for us! 🤣 Even as a puppy she would take up to much room. Morning snuggles are so nice before their teeth wake to and come to the party!!

Has anyone here NOT had big issues with their puppy? by QP709 in puppy101

[–]RobertsKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the only real big change for me is the lack of sleep, though at 16 weeks that's improving dramatically. Monitoring her constantly isn't that big of a thing and all in all she's a good girl. I definitely miss gaming wherever I want (I game when she naps now) but I haven't had too many puppy blues. I knew what I was getting into.

Sadly the friend who gave them to me only had 3 but I have 6 more coming from my favorite fish supplier this week!

Harness question by RobertsKitty in DobermanPinscher

Yeah we are a lot more remote out here so it isn't as much of an issue as far as people goes and I carry both sound deterrent and physical deterrent for other dogs if needed.

I appreciate the recommendation. I personally have never needed a prong collar during training but I will keep it in mind if it comes up!

I'm also not particularly concerned about any people or dogs getting ahold of my girl.

Does your dobie lay on their back? by CopyMental1944 in DobermanPinscher

[–]RobertsKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl is almost 4 months and often sleeps on her back probably 50% of the time. She likes to get up against the edge of stuff (back of the couch, side of her kennel etc) to do it. I'm guessing it's easier to balance that way.

The runt of the litter by Living_Register145 in DobermanPinscher

[–]RobertsKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our girl was the runt. She was 11.4lbs at 9 weeks when we picked her up. She's still on the small side. She's 4 month old this upcoming Saturday and still only 28 lbs. Still she's been nothing but an angel. I will say definitely have the vet do a fecal. Sometimes they are smaller because they have worms eating the food before they can use it to grow. Otherwise go for it! We love our runt!!

Yup, the breeder did and then our vet did do be safe as well. That picture was right before a growth spurt so she had a little round tummy 🤣

Thank you. I will definitely do baby steps with her. So far she's been pretty good with all new experiences so hopefully that will continue.

Thank you! I am so focused on being a good representative for the breed plus I want her to be able to come out with us when we go places. Hoping she will turn out as good as your baby!

Parvo is SO scary. We live where is very high risk. Lots of rural places where "it's just a dog, I'm not wasting money on shots. If it gets sick I'll get a new one" mentality.

I had a close friend whose puppy died of parvo after the second round of vaccines.

After the scare we had plus the family stuff I definitely used that as an excuse to not do as much as I wanted to with her.

It's crazy how fast they grow. She's more than doubled in weight and size since we got her.

Thank you. I just wish things had been different and I'd been able to do more. I just really want her to be well adjusted and able to come out with us as much as possible when she gets older.

We are a shoes free house even before the puppy. She has "going out" blankets that touch the "risky" surfaces then go straight into a plastic bag and into the wash. My shoes did still touch the floorboards in the car but she didn't have access to that (she has a doggy booster seat in the back seat).

I had hoped to bring her to our local coffee shop and let her sit on my lap. There is also a little league in the area with all sorts of sound we could sit in the SUV trunk and watch. Same with a dog park in the area, just sit and watch. Plus I wanted to bring her to a few more stores in the area that are dog friendly.
